"Willy Wonka of East Haven?" Anita repeated with interest, amusement in her voice. "I never would have thought of it like that, but it makes a lot of sense. How long have your family owned this business?" Even though she'd been in town for several decades, she still didn't know everything on its history. She threw herself into her work so much that sometimes she neglected catching up on the local happenings.
Her eyes flickered over to the counter teeming with toppings, it took her a few moments to decide, debating on what she wanted. "Hmmm... I'll just get some toasted coconut flakes on the strawberry white chocolate, and for the kid's cup..." For once, she was stumped. "Do you have any recommendations? It's for my 5 year old granddaughter and truthfully, I have no clue what to get her."
Tumblr media
Summer was near, which meant Anita no longer needed an excuse to indulge in ice cream. As much as she tried to convince herself she didn’t need it, her craving for the iced delicacy was too prominent to bear. “Well, it’s a very important job.” The woman joked dryly, a light chuckle eliciting her blush painted lips. “I’ll get two scoops of strawberry and white chocolate. And a kid’s cup of chocolate, please.” Of course, she couldn’t forget her grandchild who was off exploring the stalls with her mother. It was her duty to spoil her grandkids, even if her daughter would have to deal with the little one’s sugar high later. “if that’s not any trouble. Wouldn’t want the ice cream man to get overworked.” Her tone was teasing, a wink following the playful comment before she slid over the money for the ice cream, along with a twenty dollar tip.

Ever since that night at the charity gala, Anita couldn’t get her mind off Kingston Shepherd. Of course, that was a common occurrence in her life, or it had been when they were together. These days she tried her hardest to keep him out of her mind, in a bid to keep the remainder of her heart intact. Their break up destroyed her, despite the heart-wrenching fact it was all her own doing. She regretted what she did with every fiber of her being. If only she could change the past, because she would in an instant. He was all she wanted, he was the man she loved. But she’d already fucked everything up. She doubted he wanted anything to do with her now, not when he had that lanky, stunning Italian woman on his arm. She was divine, like a young Monica Bellucci. She assumed she satisfied him in ways she never could, considering the rumours around town about the couple being engaged. Why else would he still be with the younger woman? It killed her... the thought of him being with someone else. None of his other girlfriends in the past had ever made her nervous, but there was something about Daniela.
The fact that she had to face her ex lover at work on this particular morning, she was quaking inside. But there was a part of her that was aching to see him again, to gaze at that handsome face once again and look into those eyes that she always got lost in.
Walking into the conference room, she strut with the kind of confidence she’d perfected over the years, but this time it was completely feigned. Although, it dissipated the moment she laid eyes on Kingston, her heart fluttering at the sight. “It’s good to see you, Mr. Shepherd. I wouldn’t mind at all. We’ve got a job to do, so let’s get it done, shall we?” She replied jovially, plastering her signature smile on her face. The moniker Mr. Shepherd was something she used to call him playfully, in the heat of the moment... it’d become an inside joke of sorts.
As they sat working, the silence was awkward, the tension could be cut with a knife, but she could feel when he had his eyes on her, as if his blue hues were boring a hole into her flesh. She chose to ignore it reluctantly, it killed her that she couldn’t flirt with him the way she used to. Back when they were lovers and on the rare occasion they happened to be at court together, they would steal looks at each other, sneak into an empty conference room for a quick kiss and practically eye-fuck each other from across the room. Today it was different. Painfully so.
Once their clients arrived, she let out the breath she had caught in her throat, immediately standing up to greet them. “Good morning.” She greeted with a false kindness, offering them a tight-lipped smile.
It was time to get to work, and despite her passionate history with the opposing lawyer, that didn’t mean she was going to play nice. “I appreciate all of you being here today despite the circumstances.” At that, she promptly sat back down in her seat. She had to get her thoughts together, but the distraction in the form of Kingston was proving to be difficult.
Shuffling her files before pulling out the relevant documents, her dark eyes flickered up ahead of her, unintentionally locking with Kingston’s before she quickly broke the contact to turn her head towards her clients, three representatives of one of the country’s biggest oil companies. “Mr. Shepherd, my clients are willing to answer any additional questions the Springfield family have before we begin.”

Where : at the Courthouse When : March 12th, around 10 am
Last time Kingston saw you was at this charity dinner. You were wearing his favorite dress, and he had gotten to smell that lovely perfume, when you talked on this balcony. That night was hell. It had been so long, since you two had a moment alone. It was your fault though, wasn’t it ? You were the one to break the other’s heart, pushing him into the arms of the very woman you didn’t want him to be with. Kingston was miserable, even though as proud as he was, he would never tell you that. Throughout East Haven, anyone who knew him would tell you Kingston was happy. Daniela and he made such a great pair, some people even spread the rumors of an engagement. I mean, how could it not be the case ? Look at them, walking arms in arms through the town’s spring celebrations. They surely would have one of the most beautiful weddings in East Haven, right ? There was a time when only you knew this would never happen. Kingston was all yours at that time, remember ? However now, how could you be so sure ? Just like you had once been, you were only Henry’s wife, he was only your husband’s associate, and you worked for another law firm.
“Ms Kho, our clients will be arriving soon. We have some details to go over before that, if you wouldn’t mind.” Kingston told you when you arrived, just as he grabbed your hand to shake it, that same hand he used to kiss in adoration.
Kingston sat across the table, facing you. Soon enough, two cups of coffee were served, and the environmentalist lawyer opened his file. Kingston was defending the Springfield family today. But truth be told, the case you were here for today didn’t matter much. A family vs. a big company, a pollution matter, that made the family’s land dangerous to live on. You all knew how it was going to end. Stories like that happened all the time. It was routine. However, it wasn’t routine for the two of you to work together, or rather, here, against one another. Well, guess it fits your story. But for 10 to 15 minutes, you went over such details, and waited for your clients to arrive. God, did they take their time. Was traffic that bad ? Or did Kingston just arrive so early, just in the hopes of catching Anita alone for a little while ? Anyways, if your ex-lover did that, the trap closed in on him. It was too long, and he didn’t want to start rubbish small talk. You had never been good at that, you and him.
In this room, Kingston did his best to avoid looking at you. He pretended to be working, to send emails, or to go over the file, to prepare the appointment. Sometimes, he would look at your hands, and his eyes would cross paths with that horrible wedding band you seemed to flaunt since you broke up with him. Kingston also caught a glimpse of that perfect neck of yours, and the way your shoulders wore that beautiful top. Oh, no, he couldn’t possibly start talking to you. Too many people around, and too much anger still bubbling inside of him. Luckily, the door opened just seconds after that, letting in your two clients. “Hello, Ms Springfield. Please, sit down. We were waiting for you.” Kingston started, focusing entirely on his client. Saved at the very last moment !

"Listen, manning the ice cream station takes more work than one would think” Malakai jested, sipping a beer, he had grabbed from the cooler under the table. "There really is an art to scooping ice cream, and getting it all prepared for you" he said scooping another flavor into the cup, filling it with all the toppings. "Besides, if I didn't do it, who would?"

Sport. It wasn’t really her thing. Sure, she tolerated it due to her husband’s keen interest in an array of different sports, but every now and then, he’d propose the idea of attending a game, something she usually tried to avoid with work excuses. Today was a different story. The lawyer had been roped into it last minute, much to her dismay, but it was nothing a few drinks couldn’t fix.
Looking like a fish out of water, clearly not in her element, as was obvious by her designer suit that adorned her body, Anita stuck out like a sore thumb in her dressier attire among people who were far more sensibly dressed. But in her defense, she’d just come from work.
The sound of the buzzing, excited crowd was zoned out by her sheer focus on her phone screen, her dark eyes scanning through various emails to bide the time while her other half mingled with some friends until an unfamiliar voice captured her attention. Sorry?” She replied a few seconds later before she’d fully registered the brunette’s words. “Oh, no, not yet. I think there’s some sort of... delay? At least that’s what I heard in passing a few minutes ago.” A shrug. “I’ll admit... I’m not much of a baseball fan. I never know what’s going on.” Chuckling lightly, she brought her cup of beer to her lips briefly. “Are you a regular to these things?”

Gabi wasn't the biggest fan of baseball, but her father had been so she'd frequented many a game with him. It was a way to get away from the insistence that her mother teach her how to cook and clean like a 'good woman' was meant to. Then again, maybe if she'd listened more to her mother about what a good woman was, she wouldn't be in the position she was currently in with her soon-to-be-ex husband.
She grabbed a lemonade from a stand run by children and shook her head when offered the chance from the $20 note she'd handed them before blowing a loud breath out through her pursed lips. Making her way back into the stand, she asked someone close by as she sat, "Have they started yet?"

The awkwardness that lingered in the air was prominent, an annoying little itch that aggravated her as she stared at Kingston hopelessly, trying to maintain whatever cool she had left in her. Anita didn’t want to look as though she was quaking inside, she didn’t want to show weakness, especially to one of the few people on this earth that she wholeheartedly adored.
No other love she’d ever experienced could compete with that of Kingston, he was the one true love of her life, the man she’ll dream of until her dying day. The one that got away. Well, by her own doing. That was completely her fault, and it pained her more than she’d ever admit. She wasn’t supposed to fall in love with her husband’s best friend, it began as a one night whim… a night of passion that was supposed to be a mistake. But it wasn’t. It didn’t feel like a mistake. When she was with Kingston, everything felt right, like she was made to be with him… and she believed it. The more they saw each other in the beginning, the more she got hooked. Before she knew it, her heart and body ached for him. Any intimacy she received from her husband did not sate her raw desire for Kingston. That scared her.
Hearing the man she loved speak about his girlfriend made her heart sink, a sick feeling taking over her. But she had to be happy for him. He deserved happiness, a love that knew no bounds… a woman that wasn’t going to have him as her little secret. If Anita was able to change the past, she would choose Kingston. A million times over. She would be fooling herself if she said she wanted to stay with Henry. It was clear as day when she looked at Kingston, compared to the way she looked at her husband. Adoration, desire, admiration. But Henry? Henry was just… there. An obligation, at this point. The only thing binding them was the gold wedding band that adorned her ring finger. Their marriage was convenient and keeping up the facade became a habit after the almost forty years of them being together. As much as she knew she needed to leave Henry, the change scared her.
“She’s beautiful… she looks like a model. She’s… young. Younger. I didn’t know that was your thing.” The brunette observed, a flatness to her voice, an insecurity that rarely plagued her. She was a woman who knew her worth, she was aware of her beauty, yet Daniela made her feel sheer insecurity. The kind she hadn’t felt since she was a young, clueless teenager navigating the world. “I’m glad your family like her. You deserve to be happy.” Those words were genuine, purely so, but it pained her that she wasn’t the one making him happy… the way she used to.
It was easy to pinpoint the easy escape her ex lover was trying to make, but honestly, she just wanted to bask in his presence for a few moments longer. “Uh… yeah…” She began, awkwardly shifting in place. “I’m not too bothered about missing dessert. The main course was subpar… made me lose my appetite, if I’m being honest.” She laughed easily, the kind of effortless laugh that he used to provoke. “It’s really nice to see you tonight.” In that moment, she moved further towards the balcony railing, one hand resting on the edge as she got closer to him, a distance that was appropriate enough for the two of them to be seen in without raising suspicion. To everyone else, they were just old friends, brought together through her husband, but in reality, they were lovers… two people whose infatuation with each other was intoxicating. But they played the platonic card well. No one would ever guess the intense passion they shared, they wouldn’t believe that most weekends Henry’s ‘devoted’ wife was entangled in the sheets with his best friend, making love to him in the way she should have reserved for her spouse. She couldn’t get enough of Kingston, so much so that it was a foreign feeling to be without his tender touch, the feeling of his lips against her own, the way he’d pleasure her in ways she hadn’t had in years. “So… do you think she’s the one?” Her tone was curious, but it provoked an ache in her chest that she didn’t think she’d ever experienced before. It was enough to have her retrieve a sleek gold flask from her purse. She needed something stronger than whatever they were serving at this gala. “It’s scotch. Stronger than whatever they’re serving here.” At that, she held it out to him, almost as if it was her way of pleading to have him stay a little longer. She craved his company. Even if it was only brief. The withdrawal she’d had from him was utterly brutal.
@sewastarters for @anitakho Location : At a charity event around town Date : March 17th, at night
Tumblr media
You had been sitting around this dinner table for what felt like hours. Charity events were always so boring to Kingston, who thought the ambient fake kindness of people’s hearts was sickening. He was still playing the part. In a little under three hours, he had donated the equivalent of a mayor’s yearly salary to whatever cause you were all gathered for tonight. He smiled, introduced Daniela, the italian beauty he’d met back in November, and raised his glass each time another person wanted to give a toast to tonight’s amazing proof of solidarity. If you looked at him, you’d only see a charming man, enjoying his night.
The venue was splendid. Glass chandeliers dangled over your heads, flower arrangements hinted at the upcoming spring, and the music, turned almost all the way down, allowed some interesting conversations to play out. “Henry, stop, you flatter me. And I don’t think our lovely ladies here want to hear more about our professional lives for tonight, right, Dani ?” When turning his head towards his new girlfriend, Kingston made sure he caught a glimpse of your oh so perfect face. He wanted to see the pain he was inflicting your heart, if you had one. He wanted you to see what you were missing, what you could have gotten if only you had decided your relationship was worth something. Look, Anita dearest. Look how happy Kingston is, with his tall, tan-skinned brunette, about fifteen years younger than you.
He wasn’t tho, was he ? If Kingston sought your pain in your eyes, it was more out of desperation, than true wish for vengeance. It had been exactly three months since you hadn’t met in this hotel in the city center, or in the apartment he bought just so the two of you could sneak out of your homes and enjoy the other’s company for a few hours. It had been three months already, however when Kingston kissed the back of your hand to greet you tonight, he couldn’t help but linger a second too long and observe that perfect skin of yours. He remembered that dress he’d already stripped you of, and these earrings he gave you as a gift for your last birthday. Kingston Shepherd had rarely seen women as outstanding as you and for a second there, he thought of blowing both your covers. However the presence of both your partners tonight quickly came back to him and he stood straight up again. Now at the table you were all asked to sit for tonight, he could only stare at you from the corner of his eye, and listen to the constant useless commentaries of Daniela. She was nothing, compared to you, and yet she was everything he could have. But he wanted you.
You fit together. He told you, in December, how he thought you two fit better together than you could ever fit with Henry. Oh how that conversation ended well, seeing you were still with your husband, and Kingston was still with the girl you yelled at him about. He couldn’t bear this, not any longer. As the night continued, the air seemed to leave Kingston’s lungs. When dessert was announced, the fifty-five year old took leave and went out to a remote balcony, to grab some fresh air. He didn’t know if it was anger, or heartbreak. Hell, he wasn’t even considering the second option. Kingston Shepherd didn’t let any woman break his heart, let alone one who made a fool of him. It was definitely anger. He was mad at you. He couldn’t tolerate the sight of your gorgeous brown eyes. He hated to see you smile at your boring ass Henry. He loved Henry, he was like a brother to him. But how could he think highly of him, when he was the one to get to smell your perfume right on your neck, or to wrap your arms in kisses when the moon was out at night ?
He needed to get back inside, or someone would come looking for him. So Kingston closed his eyes, took a deep breath before emptying his glass of champagne, and readjusted his suit. He was about to resume his perfect act, when he heard the sounds of two heels walking towards him.

It wasn’t often that Anita Kho was rattled, she oozed the utmost confidence and sophistication in every aspect of her life at all times. but tonight, tonight she felt as though someone was playing a some cruel, twisted joke on her… the kind everyone else was in on but her. The presence of Kingston had never shaken her confidence in the past, it was once a thing she thanked god for, he was her slice of heaven that distracted her from a marriage she felt trapped in. Oh, how things had changed so drastically in the past three months, even if she had been the cause of the demise of their entanglement. It wasn’t what she wanted, she regretted breaking up with him with every fibre of her being, but she got spooked the moment the words ‘I love you’ left his lips. If she could turn back time, she would without a second thought, she’d jump into his warm embrace and declare how madly in love she was, how he was all she wanted. Sadly, it wasn’t quite that simple. The damage had already been done.
An additional kick to the gut was Daniela. That tall, gorgeous Italian who looked as if she’d been plucked straight from the cover of Vogue, Anita loathed the woman despite having spoken no more than 5 words to her. She could barely look at her without feeling the searing burn of jealousy in the pit of her stomach, only managing to contribute to the conversation with an occasional nod until Kingston’s voice pulled her out of her fog, her dark eyes flickering up to meet with his. Tonight was the most contact they’d had in months, she had to savour it, even if she had already caught onto what he was doing. Well, two can play at that game.
Resting a hand on her husband’s shoulder as she leaned into his side, her movement provoked the man to slide a hand down to her lower back. “It’s quite alright. But I apologise, I have to excuse myself to touch up my makeup, I won’t be long.“ Without missing a beat, she turned her head to capture Henry’s lips into a kiss. It was like she could feel Kingston’s eyes on her, it gave her some fleeting satisfaction to give him a taste of his own medicine, but it wore off because she knew deep down that all she wanted was him. Not Henry… Never Henry. “Don’t miss me too much, darling.” The brunette quipped to the man before unraveling herself from her spouse’s arms to find a spare moment to regain composure in private.
Dinner felt agonisingly long, the tension between the two ex lovers could be cut with a knife, yet they were the only ones who knew about it. Sitting directly opposite Kingston felt both a blessing and a curse — a blessing because it allowed her to sneak gazes at his dashingly handsome face. A curse, because she couldn’t be the one to shower him in kisses. It left her mind to wander to happier times, the memories of their secret rendezvous. The nights when she’d be wrapped up in his embrace as they drank wine and talked for hours on end, just relishing in each other’s company, when they made love on every inch of that apartment or lay in bed together without a single care in the world.
Completely zoned out from whatever ridiculous tangent her husband was on with a colleague, her gaze followed Kingston as he left the table… the temptation to discreetly follow him onto the balcony became too much to bare until she bit the bullet and gave into her desire.
The sting of the ice cold air hitting her skin once she ventured onto the balcony was surprisingly more bearable than her nervousness rearing its ugly head. But she couldn’t stay away.
“You had the right idea…” She began, unsure exactly how to address the elephant in the room. “About getting some fresh air, I mean.” Normally, the ice queen of Seattle knew how to handle tricky situations, but right now she was a fish out of water. “It’s quite the party. And… Daniela… she’s…” A pause as she moved towards him. “She’s lovely, you two look great together.” A complete fucking lie — she thought his new girlfriend was beneath him, but of course, she wasn’t going to tell him that.
