I love a character raised to be a weapon as much as the next guy. But what really gets me is a character raised to be a shield. Who can’t fathom being needed—or even being wanted— beyond keeping others safe. Who believe they are alive only to insure someone doesn’t die. no matter the cost. Characters who self-sacrifice not because they think they deserve it, but because no one else does deserve it, and it’s their job to protect.

Characters who’ve been told that’s why your important. Your worth something because this other person/ thing is important, and you are here solely to keep them safe.

Bonus points if it’s not a legitimate job they’ve been given. Maybe at one point it was, but now that they are free from it, they haven’t given up that mentality. No one is forcing or asking them to do this, but they need to. They need to in order to be deserving.

Open RP (Borderlands AU)

Rarely does this man venture away from the planet he calls his home. He uses his abilities to help those around him, ensures that he's as good for his community as he can possibly, even torments himself by holding himself to a standard he cannot achieve in his desire to help.

But it's his desire to help that brought him here, looking over a hellscape he's largely unfamiliar with. That desire, prompted by a distress call that demanded his attention as soon as it came to him, and, in spite of his family's warnings, he left his planet, temporarily content without him, and now that he's here in this place he feels a sense of unease.

Is it a trap? Is it genuine? Had it been placed by mistake? Will he get there on time if he's even needed?

All of these questions race through his mind, but it doesn't stop him from moving forward to trace that signal, towards the unknown.

Characters who are so compassionate that it borders on self-sacrifice. Characters who are so broken by the cruelty of the world that they make it their mission to save as many people as they can. Characters who don't know how to and don't want to be selfish. Characters who are collapsing on themselves but still devote themselves to others' wellbeing. Just... characters who are so hellbent on being kind to others that they don't notice their own self-destruction.
