Sometimes the Doctor sees very vivid dreams about his life with Rose. He can smell coffee she usually makes in the morning, feel her lips on his skin, hear their child’s laughter in the garden… And one time his ears even catch up the sound of a newly born Tardis…

But then he wakes up and all memories are gone: swept away, turned into a distant breeze. It’s like he’s never dreamt it. Maybe all this is deeply subconscious, but there’s a highly possibility that his mind does it on purpose to block all the pain he feels watching those pictures. Because it hurts. Observing all that life he could’ve had with Rose. It hurts.

And it would’ve hurt even more if he’d realised the utter truth. That it’s not a dream, but a complicated subconscious connection between two Doctors’ minds keeping them linked and transporting their true memories to and fro from time to time.

And though his two hearts are in anguish, there’s content as well. Because deep down he knows that his woman is safe and sound. And that the Bad Wolf girl who had stolen his hearts and cured him long ago, that girl, out of all his companions, is the only one who, after suffering so much, ended up with his human incarnation who is able to give her his one heart and grow old with her like a normal couple (well, nearly normal, ‘cause there’s not such thing as “normal” when a Time Lord is involved, even a half-human one).

“Love’s labours won” eventually, his old pal Will knew thing or two, period. And that knowledge is worth the pain.
