Rose Tyler’s Wardrobe, Series 2
Tumblr media
HI SORRY CAN YOU BELIEVE RUSSELL T DAVIES IS COMING BACK TO DOCTOR WHO????!! ! ! ! !! ???!!!
if anyone can get me writing about these fools again, it’s him and his absolutely absurd, camptastic, heartfelt, human take on this ridiculous show.
Onto business! We’ve covered the ever-stylish Martha Jones. We’ve whizzed through the ever-glamorous River Song. We’ve all gone mad for Rose Tyler’s teeny, street-rat, perfectly ordinary wardrobe. And now it’s time to hop back in, and see how her development from one series to another is reflected through her clothes—and oh, boy, do I have a series for you!
Here we are again, ready to rip into Series 2, and it’s very exciting because at last we will see the end of this awful, disgusting, so-out-of-place Punky Fish shirt.
Tumblr media
I hate you <3
Last time we left Rose Tyler, she was dealing with the impending doom of watching her Doctor regenerate while she stood there in, of all things, a Punky Fish hoodie. I already went off about this choice, and how ridiculous it is for a girl to become Time Goddess while wearing a zip-up, but I have to go over it again—because seriously, here’s Rose, right at the peak of her series 1 arc, right when she’s really come into her own as a time travel queen, standing around in something that’s only the slightest little upgrade to what she was wearing in episode 1.
Also like, brand rep? Right there? Right there in the most important scene? Okay fine whatever, let’s let Christopher Eccleston regenerate in UTTER HUMILIATION because Rose has to earn her endorsement points instead of being reasonable and singing elegies.
Tumblr media
Oh my god it’s David Tennant!
Clearly the Tenth Doctor, for all his talk about no second chances, is very forgiving in the style department—he nicely crash-lands Rose back home for Christmas, and Rose reciprocates the kindness by, um, completely changing her look in such a radical way it’s taken me five years?! to put it into words.
Tumblr media
Like, holy shit, lady. Your boyfriend is out cold in a new body and you think this is the time to go platinum?

Rose Tyler's Wardrobe, Series 1
Tumblr media
Hi everybody! It’s been a long, long, long time since I wrote a Doctor Who costuming post. I did Martha. I did River. And now it’s Rose’s turn. Well, for Series 1 at least. Series 2 and 4 will get their own posts. :)
I’m excited to do Rose, because she is quite a different creature than Martha or River. Style-wise, Martha was fashionable and neat and as tied together as an upper-class med student can be; River was full of swag and style and time travel. You look at either of their wardrobes and you go “ooooh” and “I wanna wear that!” And you get that reaction because the costumer wanted you to admire these characters and recognize whatever it is about them that gives them that style—in Martha’s case, that’s her elegant background, and in River’s, it’s her habit of living life to its absolute fullest degree. In more condensed terms, the very fact that they’re well-dressed relays something about them as characters, which is the point of costuming.
Is Rose like that, all stylish and gorgeous and decked out in cool textile items? Noooo. Rose is not much of a clothes horse—she gets some sweet outfits, but unlike Martha and River, those outfits are little gems sprinkled in among 2005 hoodies and jeans and godawful bags. And that’s actually really, really special, because it meant the costumer abandoned fashion and style and the temptation to dress Billie Piper as beautifully as possible to be real with the viewer, to have every piece of clothing count not for its aesthetic experience but for its ability to tell you who Rose is, with every grimy shoe and synthetic thread. Rose’s costuming is pure visual storytelling, and I love it. I love it.
With exceptions, of course. Because we all make mistakes.
So! With my gushing out of the way, let’s get on. Guess what time it is? PAJAMA TIME.
Tumblr media
Yeah, no, I’m not going to analyze a striped tank top and white sweats as symbolizing Rose’s imprisonment within her ideal of self and her fundamentally pure soul. They’re pajamas, guys. Pajamas some costume person yanked off a rack and said “uh yeah this might be Billie’s size.” It’s a dull start, but don’t worry; it gets so much more interesting.
Tumblr media
See???? Interesting! The look you see above—worn pink hoodie, cheap pink tank top, shapeless jeans, oddly loud messenger bag and a little Ninth Doctor to hold in one hand—is what Rose is wearing when we start spending any large amount of time with her. Now, I can hear you sighing: this outfit isn’t very glamorous, is it? I mean, Martha was fashionable. River was stylish. But this is so…..ordinary.
And you’re right: as fashion, as style, this is kind of a disappointing outfit. But to tell you about a character using only clothes? It’s AMAZING. Take a long look at it. What can we figure out about Rose, from one outfit?
Actually quite a lot.
Do you see how it’s a couple different shades of pink? This shows you the logic Rose uses when she puts herself together in the morning. While Martha has a solid color palette of reds and golds that she’s layered together in a way that suggests she learned how to look like a class act by osmosis, Rose very much got dressed by grabbing clothes from a drawer. There is a logic to it—pinks go together, right? and jeans go with everything?—but it’s not the elegant color palette Martha would have been acclimated to in her upper-middle-class household. Rose tried, but she didn’t think of going out of her comfort zone of pinks, or of making any fashionable combinations, like having her shirt pick up some of the colors from her bag. She had to get to work, man, she didn’t have time for that. (in technical terms, Rose is using a monochromatic color palette, while Martha uses a more grown-up analogous one. if color palettes are your thing, you get me).
it’s youthful: again, pink, and also the loose-fitting hoodie. She’s not dressed like a Young Adult Person with Career Goals Who Drinks Red Wine And Has a Resume. Rose still looks a little like a kid (also super comfortable).
it’s very, very casual—I’m kind of surprised even a shopgirl was allowed to be this dressed down at a department store, but I haven’t been in a big one in a long time so who knows? Rose is not here to impress anybody, nor really herself.
it’s not high-quality stuff, at all. It’s going to wear out in less than a year; you can almost see through the sweater, it’s so used. This kind of thing shows you that Rose can’t afford the best clothes, and also doesn’t care enough to spend the money she does have that way.
They’re working-class clothes: dependable, comfy, don’t stand out much. Kinda like Rose, when she meets the Doctor.
So already in one outfit, without having to know anything else about her, you know a little about Rose: she’s not the Anna Wintour of the Powell Estate, she’s not rich, she’s not dressing like she expects a lot out of her day—dressed like that, I doubt she even expects a promotion. It all reflects where Rose is going at this point: nowhere.
Tumblr media
Good point, Jackie. And happen it does: the Doctor comes back. Rose, again, is not prepared to wow in the style department. Look at her.
Tumblr media
I want to applaud the costume department for getting the tank-top-and-crappy-hoodie-with-bra-slightly-showing look down perfectly, because this is exactly the sort of thing normal unemployed nineteen-year-old girls wear. Like, wow. Stop spying on me, show.
Fortunately, Nine is not a fashion critic and takes Rose on board despite her tank tops. They go to the end of the world, and it’s very glam, and Rose zips up her hoodie and calls it good.
Tumblr media
God, she’s so normal-looking. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show where the fashion was this level of accurately boring. Is the show whacking you over the head enough with Rose being normal yet? Is this post?
Just to whack you over the head with it a bit more, Rose is predominantly wearing very dark, ordinary, dull grays, which reinforces how very ~NORMAL~ she is. Considering that these sorts of things were what companions were wearing shortly before Who got kicked off the screen in the 80s, I kinda can’t blame the costumers for veering this hard into Smoll Ordinary Nobodyville.
Though she is still the Smollest Ordinariest Nobody of All, note that Rose is already wearing a deeper shade of pink/maroon than when she was folding shirts and watching Mickey dance. The symbolism, guys! Rose is already deepening and darkening as a person! Ooooh!
Even better, though? Look at Nine’s shirt. Look back at Rose’s hoodie. One adventure in and they’re matching, guys.
Tumblr media
Literally one episode with these two and they’re already so adorable. How. Why, show. Why.

This is a slow fandom zone
None of that "Oh no they bomb-dropped all the episodes in a week 1 month ago, I'm late!" "The tag hasn't been active all week is the fandom dead?" "I only got a hundred shares the first hour no one cares about my art"
Slow down
Take a deep breath and slow down
Fandom is YOU. And me and everyone. If we doodle stick figures for a show that ended 30 years ago we aren't "late" or "doing too little", we're playing dolls in our own time and having fun with works of art that mean a lot to us
You can literally watch and engage with something that aired in 2004 as if it aired yesterday
If the tag hasn't been active for 14 months guess what? If YOU post there, it isn't dead. Literally you can talk about anything you want whenever you want there is no weird law against watching things that people aren't actively talk about
Let's be deranged about stories together

*pokes nose in* This is such an interesting question! I personally think the more intriguing option would be that Hardy and Hannah never crossed the line physically while he and Tess were still married. Not to give Hardy some metaphorical moral high ground in an argument with Tess, but to offer up a chance to explore not only how Hardy and Tess' marriage fell apart (I sincerely doubt it was just b/c of the stresses caused by the Gillespie case) but also different types of infidelity.
Tess cheated physically with Dave at the very least. We don't know a whole lot about their relationship other than that, such as whether there was an emotional component to their relationship or if it was just sex. In a world where Hardy met Hannah around the same time he met Tess, but where (as you've said in one of your headcanon posts) they're at a point in their lives where the age difference between them matters and they're on very different trajectories, Tess is the logical and reasonable choice. Plus he does genuinely love her. I don't think Hardy by any means "settled" for Tess in this scenario. The thing of it is, he does love Hannah too, or at least cares very deeply for her (he may not define it as love, never lets himself define it that way, particularly after he consciously chose Tess).
Ultimately, Hardy throws himself into his commitment to Tess, which is made somewhat easier by the estrangement with Hannah after she reveals that she's chosen to become a call girl. But the estrangement doesn't last overly long, and they eventually reconcile and settle into what they define as friendship. Hardy builds his life with Tess, Daisy comes along, he's doing well professionally, getting promoted up the ladder. At the same time, though, he and Hannah are in contact, perhaps mostly by phone (they talk maybe a couple of times a month), but maybe he visits her when he makes a trip to London (perhaps for something work-related, and they do lunch/dinner while he's there or whatever).
I don't think Hardy would keep Hannah a secret from Tess, per say, but like you said, he might be a bit cagey about her, perhaps not even consciously. I like the idea of him referring to her as Baxter. Maybe Tess overhears their conversations on the phone and hears him referring to Hannah by her last name (they're joking around about something or other), and she doesn't think anything of it. But maybe when Hardy gets promoted to DI, Tess decides to throw him a party and she wrangles Hannah's address somehow and invites her to attend. Hannah, naturally, agrees to come. That's when the image Tess may have built up of Hannah in her mind - some old colleague/coworker/whatever of Hardy's - begins to crumble.
Now, I don't like the idea of Hannah being one of the causes of Tess and Hardy's marriage failing, but the fact that Hannah is traditionally gorgeous, has a touchy-feely nature that could give someone the wrong idea (like she often grabs onto Hardy's arm when they're talking and laughing together or something), doesn't help matters. I think Hardy seemed to blame his promotion to DI as the reason his and Tess' relationship began to hit the skids - he was working more and more, having less time to spend with her and Daisy - but I honestly doubt that was the sole reason. There could be an element of professional jealousy, with him getting the promotion over her, and the party is Tess' way of trying to put that jealousy behind her. Hannah is just an unexpected issue that kind of hits Tess in the feels at the wrong time. But still, I think there are a multitude of reasons why their marriage began to crack, and it would be so interesting to explore that in more detail.
Anyway, as Tess and Hardy's problems begin to escalate, Hardy begins leaning on Hannah more and more. The calls between them increase as he unconsciously seeks out the emotional support that he's not getting from Tess. This causes him to pull away from Tess even more.
Then comes the Gillespie case. I imagine this case hits the whole team hard, not just Hardy. They're all horrified over the death of Pippa and disappearance/likely death of Lisa. Hardy copes by throwing himself into the case, digging and digging and digging, trying to get justice for the girls and bringing at least some measure of closure for the families. This ultimately leads him and Tess being driven even further apart. She's left feeling isolated and alone, and that leads her to Dave. Then comes the whole situation with the pendant. I think the discovery of the pendant was a huge breakthrough for the case (Hardy even said it was the smoking gun), and Tess and Dave genuinely were celebrating the find when they stopped at that hotel (which was incredibly stupid but I'll save that rant for another day). Then the pendant is stolen and everything comes crashing down.
As I said, I don't see the Gillespie case as being the sole cause of Hardy and Tess' marriage failing. I think it's a lot more complex than that. Tess cheated physically, but Hardy may have had a bit of emotional infidelity going on with Hannah. I don't think it would have started out that way, but the bottom line of it is I think there was a part of him that was solely Hannah's, that there was a piece of his heart that didn't go to Tess. It's messy, it's human.
On a final note, I suppose I'm kind of comparing Hannah and Hardy's relationship during this time to the relationship between Olivia Benson and Elliott Stabler in the early era of Law and Order: SVU. Stabler was a devoted family man with his wife Kathy and his four (later five) children. Olivia was his partner and best friend, but things were definitely complicated. Even Kathy in later years referred to Olivia as Elliott's "work wife." But in the last few years of the Stabler era of the show, one really gets the feeling that lines between Stabler and Benson were getting blurry. They never crossed the line physically - at one point Stabler's son Dicky straight up asks/accuses Olivia if she ever slept with his dad, and she looks him straight in the eye and declares, "Never." I believed her. OTOH, Stabler and Benson were called out more than once on being "too close", of having risky emotional dependence on one another. A viewer really sees this evolution over time as Stabler's marriage falls apart and he loses the family he built. These losses really lead to him leaning on Olivia even more ("You and this job are the only things I've got anymore," he tells her at one point). Overall, I'd say that they crossed the line in an emotional sense so much that the line was clear back in Albuquerque. It's one reason why Stabler's abrupt ghosting of Olivia when he retired after a work-related shooting was so traumatic for her. As she told him years later, "You were the most, single-most, important person in my life and you just... disappeared." It's not an exact correlation by any means, but I just really see some similarities between the two couples.
just curious - in your hc universe where hannah and hardy knew each other for years, do you think tess ever accused hardy and/or hannah of having had an affair while she and hardy were married? i could see hardy just gritting out a curt 'no' but i bet hannah would say something snarky about that being tess' dept and hannah could swear b/f a judge that she never banged hardy while he was chained to tess lol.
Oh yeah, definitely. Then again, in that verse, Hardy was very cagey about Hannah. He'd refer to her as "baxter", lie about her job of course, and, because Hannah lived in London, Tess didn't meet her for a long time which suited Hardy just fine. When Tess realized her husband had been spending time with that gorgeous woman, she was inevitably jealous, it didn't help that Hannah was all over Hardy.
One of the reasons I never got around to writing the whole thing out is I had many ideas, sometimes contradictory. In some versions, Hardy had a moment of weakness and cheated on Tess with Hannah, in others, he didn't, though of course he had feelings for her.

If you don't use your library's Libby and Hoopla collections, you run the risk of losing that access. Your library will see the low numbers and think "no one is using this service and we need to save money so let's get rid of it". I am saying this because at the library I work at, the collections team reduced the number of books you can check out each month for Hoopla. They reduced the amount by more than half - 25 to 10 - all because people weren't using it at the same capacity they were during lockdown.
Digital collections are expensive yes but when libraries are able to show the library board or city that their services are highly sought after and used in large numbers, that aids in arguing for increasing the budget - or at least keeping the budget where it's at.
Whatever your opinion on pirating is, you are doing not a single person favors by not using library resources just because you have a misunderstanding in how it actually works.
