Back to School
We are off to a new school term and I decided to restart my Tumblr account. With the growing threats of ransomware, election fraud, identity theft, and the like we have our largest cohort of Information Security (MSISPM) students entering this fall.

I hosted the kick-off dinner of our largest ever cohort of participants in our CISO Executive Education Program. The view of Pittsburgh from Mt. Washington was wonderful as usual. This certificate program attracts senior cybersecurity leaders from private industry and government agencies.

We have 23 students from ITAM University on campus for the next 3-weeks for a Data Analytics Workshop. They had a Python prep class in Mexico City to prepare them for the project work they will be doing on campus.

Just came back from Sheffield, UK for an iSchools Conference. I participated on a panel discussing our practices on capstone student projects. Fortunately, I’m reusing that material for a conference panel next week at INFORMS meeting of Analytics Program Directors.

It was a busy two weeks for us. We had the ‘graduation’ of our first class of Chief Risk Officers followed by the kick-off of our 10th class of Chief Information Security Officers. Both CRO and CISO are run jointly by CMU’s Heinz College and CMU’s CERT Division of the Software Engineering Institute.

We were back in Monterrey, Mexico last week for the graduation of our dual degree students. Jorge Ramirez Vargas and I were among those that started the program ten years ago. Here we are standing by our pictures from the initial launch.

Last Wednesday, Heinz College hosted a reception at the 2017 NASPAA Conference in DC. It was on the rooftop of the Hall of States building. The next day, I flew out to Mexico City to participate in a grad school fair. Here is a picture of El Angel de la Indepencencia from my hotel window.

We are so proud of our Heinz CMU alumna, Carmen Yulin Cruz, mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico. A current CMU student, Rosana Guernica, is rushing emergency supplies in and evacuating people in need off of the island. Find out more here.

The incoming fall 2017 students have arrived. With Dean Krishnan on vacation, I gave the welcoming words to some 700 students. My goal in the talk was to get the students to transition from Helicopter parenting to independent thinking.

Heinz Info Sec gets top ranking
The Heinz College’s Master of Science in Information Security Policy & Management (MSISPM) received top ranking for cyber security degree programs. We topped Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, and NYU in receiving this recognition. I’m cited in the article, which has been reposted in several online forums.

We are hosting 50 alum’s and current students from our MSIT, CIOI, and CISO program on campus next week. Once again this annual event is sold out (even though it is free!). All of these students are in distance, hybrid, and Arlington-based programs so rarely come to the Pittsburgh campus. This symposium is our chance for face-to-face interactions.
