As a kid, Benson and his parents had a pet dog.

He was a mutt— specifically, a Beagle mixed with another hound. They could never really afford a proper breeder, given that purebred dogs are unnecessarily pricey.

He can’t remember what it was called. He believes it had a name along the lines of Muffin or Brook.

Pops had snatched up a deal from a buddy of his. But the man just wanted to say he had a dog rather than oblige by the efforts of taking care of it.

The dog was noisy. Always baying at nothing. Thus, Ma and Pops booted the pooch outside. Leaving it Benson’s issue.

He adopted a sense of responsibility over the little thing. He even picked up its excrement, often throwing it over the replaceable fence to the neighbor’s lawn. He never knew what to do with animal droppings. In addition, he chose to refill a bucket of water that had been stationed outside for the dog to drink. Dumping some kibble in front of it during breakfast and dinner.

Muffin— or Brook— enjoyed any company he received, although he didn’t understand why he wasn’t allowed to enter the small, cozy home. He often pawed at the door to come back inside. Ma and Pops told their son to ignore it. Yet with all the arguing that boomed through the house’s flimsy windows, Benson believes it was better that the pup was able to bask in peace and quiet in the yard.

Later, as a senior dog, he began to show warning signs of heart failure, so Ma brought him to be euthanized.

Benson no longer focuses on animals as much as he used to when he was young.

Still, whenever he encounters a pack of wild dogs while he’s driving with Randy, they take him back to a better-ish time.

But he can’t help but observe his own eyes on untamed strays. He breaks eye contact after two or three seconds.

Randy’s been craving Benson for months,,

He frequently tensed up when the older man would brush by him, like a cat ready to recoil— and not just because he was scared he’d present cruelty to him as well. But the way he’d feel Benson’s eyes on him, memorizing his mannerisms— he believed the man was far out of his league, not to mention he probably wasn’t even gay.

Benson caught how his hands moved when he was wiping the floor, cleaning up a mess Chris made. How his lashes would flutter and how he’d have to look right up at him when he got all up close and personal. Presenting himself as this helpless being. It was practically an invitation.

One time, Benson wrote a short, simple “thank you” note to “Bradley”. Blond covered Benson’s shift for a couple hours while brunet was busy at some depot, picking up a couple tools for the house. His Ma needed him to fix the sink in her bathroom, it’d gotten clogged.

It’s been tearing up Randy inside, really. Especially after the murders, when he felt guilt ‘cause he’s starting to put others’ feelings behind himself. He never used to, although admittedly, he temporarily remained in shock during the Miss Beard incident. Until that heavy shame and self-loathing punched him in the gut. Just like Benson had. So he stored bitterness toward him.

It’s been getting better. Like a shard of broken glass is severing every inch of his aloofness, his fear. He never knows how to ask him that he wants Benson’s attentions.

The young man will just lie his head on his shoulder, his bicep, his lap without even asking.

Randy who silently judges Benson when he tries to hand feed him. Even when he’s feeling too nauseous to eat simply lacking an appetite. He kinda just sits there, baffled that Benson would assume he’d want to eat it out of his hand. Like an animal or a pet.

Randy getting shot in the shoulder perfectly resembles a deer being wounded by its pursuer.

Hunters often aim for a high-shoulder target when they’re trying to ration meat or even trying to drop their prey with a single shot or two. It’s most ethical to minimize suffering.

However, not all bullets land the right way. Nor do they create a clean blow.

Further, Benson’s shot at Randy was completely accidental. He’d meant to hit Miss Beard and missed. Once he realized what he did, he immediately rushed over to Randy’s aid, only to discover that he’d outsmarted him.

Benson punctured a risky area above Randy’s collarbone. Injuring the prey etiquette that’s demonstrated by his docile demeanor, too.

The deer, which often exposes itself through Randy’s timidity, recurrent self-loathing, and smothered reactions, hasn’t lost its life— even following Benson’s suicide by cop. Rather, it’s been bleeding out for ages.

Not once had Benson considered reflecting on today’s actions until minutes before his death. So he wanted to make things right, albeit reluctantly.

Earlier that day, a hunter tried to lure in a deer; it began to follow, leaving behind a trail of skittish hoof-steps.

Later that night, said hunter attacked the deer. But he ended up letting the animal free despite its torn flesh. He was willing to starve even with his efforts to drain it of its subtle determination.
