Omani Media Challenges
Media industry in Oman is still new and it is growing slowly. As everyone knows, media stay as a voice and eyes of public. It is the voice of governments and their politics.
Media in Oman face a serious challenge with generations. One of the main reasons behind that is the media politics which do not change. What is observed that most of Omani media platforms are going on confirming the history and culture of Oman. This trend is not wrong, but the problem that is media contents today are unable to present and discuss young people needs.
Omani media needs to improve its social and sport content. It needs also to open new spaces for young people to participate in solving problems. In my opinion, Sharing different categories in society is the best way for traditional and new media to achieve their goals.
To be honest, Omani media is suffering from generational conflict whether behind scenes or not. People who are planning, thinking and producing in the media are not qualified enough. There are dozens who working in Oman TV since 1980 and they still producing on the same level and tune.
Omani media has lack studies that measure the audience feedback continually. Further more social media platforms do not do their role as it considered. In fact, there a few official accounts which refresh the news and events on time. This show us other two central problem on Omani media which are, the gap between the few theoretical studies and the practice. The second one that is the weak and slow develop of new media.
I think in next few days, we have the responsibility to think how to improve and make media in Oman influence in society. We should all be the eyes and voice of public in a creative ways. This is only if we get a new space of freedom.

The Social Journalist
The impact of social media on journalism is unlimited. "The social journalist" article Published online on 07 Mar 2013 by Ulrika Hedman & Monika Djerf-Pierre, from the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication at University of Gothenburg , Sweden. Here is a brief summary of a research that aimed to answer one main question which is:
Are all journalists equally keen to embrace the social media life? What about journalists who chose not to use social media?
Journalist's social media life:
- In recent years, journalists have discussed the marketing, technology, new media, and public participation, ownership ,concentrations, and so on, and this can be said, "The press constantly reinvents itself."
“-Normalize” is journalists both adapt their use of social media to fit traditional professional norms and adapt those norms to fit the emergent practices of social media.
-Transparency is described as a new norm (if not the new norm) in journalism, promoting accountability and affecting online news content
-The growth of social media makes it necessary for news organizations to find ways to use social media to promote and distribute content, for live covering of events, etc.
-The individual journalist’s activity in social media becomes part of a corporate brand, and editors and managers can put pressure on journalists to be active social media users.
Method:
The study draws from a mail survey of a representative sample of Swedish journalists. The Swedish Journalists Surveys (SJS) are conducted in collaboration between the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication at the University of Gothenburg and the Swedish Union of Journalists (SUJ).
The Main Findings:
- In 2011/2012, 9 out of 10 journalists used social media for private purposes at least on a monthly basis and 85 percent used social media professionally.
-Daily use was considerably lower: 65 percent of the journalists used social media daily for private purposes and 44 percent were daily professional users.
-It is more common, however, to follow the activities of other people than to be an active producer of content.
Generational Phenomenon in Social Media:
-In the youngest group (29 years and younger) the study find that almost 6 out of 10 journalists claim to be daily users, compared with about a third among the eldest (60 years and older).
-Social media use is slightly more common among women than men, and journalists in the metropolitan area of Stockholm (the national capital) are also somewhat more active than journalists in other regions.
-The level of social media use depends on the type of workplace and work of the individual journalist.
The Uses of Social Media:
The usefulness of social media for different purposes:
-At the top of the list, the research finds the uses that are perceivedas most important include following ongoing discussions 60%.
-Further down the list research finds that getting feedback from colleagues 24%,
-The younger and older journalists are equally skeptical of the necessity and desirability of keeping private and professional uses of social media separate.
-Despite the differences, the general attitudes towards social media among journalists show noticeable signs of ambivalence.
The analysis: " including our opinion"
-Due to the rapid expansion of social media , the journalistic work affected in various aspects significantly. journalists use social media for many purposes. Social media have thus become a new arena for journalists to display their professional. Yet, journalists are not equal in practicing the social media life proficiently.
-Some features in social media serves and facilitate the main journalist's jobs such as getting ideas, following ongoing discussions, organizational branding which come by individual and professional practices for social media.
-Social media exerted an opportunity to journalists to interact with audience in an easy way, which helps journalists to understand their needs.
We think that:
-The youngest group of journalists claim to be daily users more likely than older because of the skills they have and the experience with technology, and because the older journalists have more loyalty to traditional journalism.
- journalists in (the national capital) are more active than journalists in other regions because of the advanced internet services, and the targeted audience are more educated and more likely to use the internet.
- Following ongoing discussions is the highest purpose of using social media by journalists, because it may reflect the audience's interests and needs, and it is a good way to get more about Society's important issues.
Our Opinions:
-We think that social media will change many of journalists' skills, and that emphasize the entwined relationship between journalism and technology.
- It is obvious that younger journalists have more abilities and skills that them in using social media effectively.
- What is surprise in this study, that getting feedback from colleagues came at the end of the purposes lists. In our opinion this purpose is very significant, because journalists' colleagues feedbacks and evaluations could help in improving the content and ideas of their works.
-In fact, social media is a part of everyday working life to reporters, but few understand the professional use of social media.

What Is My Cause? Art Education?!
The creativity gap with our daily business keeps growing without any sense from us. There are limited products have unusual features which make them unique. In fact, my community has a big problem with tradition and routine. Because of that, I would like to say that I am doing my best to encourage society improving the concept of art education and transfer it to reality.
Why I passionate about art education?
I am strongly believe that art education which is ignored in my community could change knowledge, practices, and behaviors. It able to bring levels from bottom to top, from nothing to everything. Art education isn’t include painting domain only, as many people thought. But it also includes cinema, music and theater arts.
Theater is one of the great platforms which can help society in solving various issues. Reducing poverty, increasing education quality, stopping gender equality, measuring economic growth, and many other goals could achieved effectively by art education. The evidence of this was what happened in Latin America when the authorities couldn't stop sex problems between teenagers and after long time attempts, they asked two young singers called Johnny and Tatiana to give tips for teenagers through the songs. This way was really effective and it shows how we can use simple arts in explaining and analyzing complex issues.
Art education plays a central role in improving health and thinking abilities. How that’s come?. People who prefer drawing, and acting are able to see deep angels which others could never see. They translate words to visual attractive messages, so this ability helps them to get strong memory and they keep thinking and looking uniquely to things around them.
How I support my cause?
In Oman, we have some institutions which support this category such as, Omani Society for Fine Arts, Omani Society for Theater, and Omani Society of Musical Arts, but I think this is not enough. We need to put more efforts in schools where we can shaping children. Also, in universities and colleges where youth put their production capacity.
I actually started training in August as a volunteer to develop adults understanding of arts importance away from traditions. I participated in Theater society and Fine Arts Society in order to support their programs in raising awareness. The interesting thing that when I finished take a photo for Yousf Al-nahwi, The Artist and Supervisor of Fine Arts Society, I visited ‘Botany Exhibition’ which show how art reflects creatively the environmental issues.

Are More Posts = More Engagement?
Twitter tweets analysis is not that much easy, but it is something interesting because you can go to deep angles. These angels could be generally related to what you have read or personal reflect hidden sides of the writers. Studying someone who specializes in the field of journalism means that there is a nature of news content. But in fact, this is not necessarily.
Jeff Paul is the journalist who I followed through twitter in last two weeks. He has 2120 followers. Paul generating more than 10 tweets per day.I chose Jeff Paul because I like his personality and I like his way in presenting and solving issues.
The most important angel that I found in Paul that he is trying to talk with people and not at them. But unfortunately, those attempts in creating conversations with followers were not achieved. After 17 days observation, the same position which is in Paul's account creates very important questions to my mind.
To evaluate Paul tweets I need some criteria which could help me to judge if his tweets content are effective or not. Because of that I looked at tweets in terms of form and content. After analyzing Jeff's tweets, I found that tweets that contained verbs and adverbs more than nouns. Jeff tried using actions words to attract followers attention.
He tweets in various aspects like political, sport, social issues. I think he discussed current events in his community effectively. Jeff used images of the events to enrich his tweets. He tried to upload dozens images when he talked about sensitive issues which could affect people's lives.
About the Hashtags Paul mostly used ' CBSDFW '. I think this Hashtag is not long and easy to find, but maybe was not the best one to contact with others. The reason is there are no that much interactivity between Jeff and his followers.
The strange thing is that out of 2120 followers there are only between 3 to 6 followers prefer Jeffs’ tweets. The followers change according to the topics, for example when he posted an image for a park with a question there is one follower attracted, so he comment and prefer the post.
What I really liked on Jeff Paul that he creates conversations with people especially when he discuss some problems inside his community. He used links to articles and videos and mentioned the news and images sources honestly.
I would like to say that Jeff Paul and everyone use twitter platform should not ignore creativity and actions words which attract people. More light adverbs and fire verbs are very important. Short and easy hashtags and, talk with people are very significant, but more posts never mean you will have more engagement.

Journey with Diabetes Superhero
Social media are focusing nowadays on raising awareness, changing routines and affecting large number of people by shedding light on health issues. Diabetic is one of the central problems in our life which produce unlimited fears by a moment.
Being diabetic patient looks something natural, but actually living with diabetes involves many duties. The most important are diet, treatment, and exercise. Checking blood glucose and ketones, counting calories, and measuring fats are not that much easy especially with type 1 patients.
Before four years, I was thinking about how I can make people around me understanding the cases that happened with me. Diabetes type 1 has taken me to many directions. I suffered a lot after I joined university because it was difficult for my friends to deal with fainting and loss of memory which caused me by less sugar. I needed a schedule that would help me stay organized for my diabetes management, gym, and studying. After long time thinking, I started writing about diabetes on social media platforms.
I chose Facebook and Whatsapp because they were the best and easiest ways to reach most of my friends. The existing thing which was not planned that was these platforms opened to me a great small window to the world.
I had been able to participate in the activities of the World Diabetes Day. They gave me the opportunity to exchange my experience around the world. I learned how to balance my life. They gave me an opened area to explain some issues related to diabetes like, insulin pump, foot care, food lists, exercise, ketones controlling and other things.
Health organizations and institutions accounts upload dozens of posts every day. Moreover, there are huge amounts of information published in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Whatsapp in different shapes like blogs, posts, stories, food photos, and exercises.
Most of the posts which spread through these platforms could be understandable by all diabetic categories starting from young until old people. The information has always presented with very simple language, attractive designs, and pictures, so the influence process achieved as it planned.
I think the best writer on that aspect is Sara Tilleskjor, public relations, and social media specialist. Sara is working in health care industry and she enjoys teaching others the best ways to manage their health. She aims to shed light on sensitive angels related to diabetes.
http://www.loop-blog.com/sara-tilleskjor/
Despite all my efforts in teaching my friends about diabetes, I found that there is no superhero except myself. I would like to say that social media made my 19 years journey with diabetes going easier. I confirm that new media reduce diabetic overcoming fears and it continues its role in guiding and protecting this category. I would like to invite you to participate with us in the World Diabetes Day, which will be on November 14. All of you are welcome.
