Heather, 30coughsomethingcough, recovering lurker. Pants at tumblr, twitter, etc., but I'm trying. Will likely share a bunch of fanish stuff (Pacific Rim, probably Good Omens, Hobbit, Star Trek, Harry Potter, etc.), random crap that I need to hoard, and probably knitting.
Don't wanna be here? Send us removal request.

Mucus Buster
Everyone's got lingering congestion this year, so as someone who's no stranger to phlegm, and inherited the folk wisdom of a stage actress (the show must go on!) I share with you my recipe for making things better:
2L water
the juice and rind of one lemon (just dump the juiced rinds in, don't zest them, you maniac)
a small thumb of fresh ginger, sliced in coins
about a dozen cloves, some star anise, peppercorns, and maybe whole cinnamon or allspice or whatever else you like, in a tea ball (except the cinnamon if it doesn't fit, obvs)
good dollop of honey, to taste
Bring the water to a boil then dump in all the stuff. Keep it hot but not boiling – a slow cooker is good for this. Keep this pot on a low heat all day and serve yourself a mug every so often, adding water as necessary. At some point you will need to add a new lemon and some more honey, but the spices can generally carry over two pots if you're drinking it regularly.
The acid helps clear the gunk, ginger is good for the circulation, and clove/aniseed/pepper have some sort of decongestant/soothing properties. Honey is both nice and antiseptic, and apparently is a cough suppressant as well? Anyway, I just got over another run of Covid and this was wasn't 100% effective but it worked better than phenylephrine.

TIL that the reason lead levels in children’s blood have dropped 85% in the past thirty years is because of an unknown scientist who fought car companies to end leaded gasoline. He also removed it from paint, suggested its removal from pipes, and campaigned for the removal of lead solder from cans.

I'm sure you probably get this a lot, but I'd love to know if you'd do the Adventure of the 3 Garridebs in the future?
I will definitely do it in the chronology of Watson's Sketchbook (I'm going to do all the stories!) but ALSO I did a comic of That Scene already, I think it was the first Holmes comic I did, here it is again:

“While many people think fanfiction is about inserting sex into texts (like Tolkien’s) where it doesn’t belong, Brancher sees it differently: “I was desperate to read about sex that included great friendship; I was repurposing Tolkien’s text in order to do that. It wasn’t that friendship needed to be sexualized, it was that erotica needed to be … friendship-ized.” Many fanfiction writers write about sex in conjunction with beloved texts and characters not because they think those texts are incomplete, but because they’re looking for stories where sex is profound and meaningful. This is part of what makes fan fiction different from pornography: unlike pornography, fanfic features characters we already care deeply about, and who tend to already have long-standing and complex relationships with each other. It’s a genre of sexual subjectification: the very opposite of objectification. It’s benefits with friendship.”
— Francesca Coppa, “Introduction to The Dwarf’s Tale,” The Fanfiction Reader (via francescacoppa)
Someone put it into words. I gotta sit down

I like the look of a slip stitch heel flap, and I appreciate the extra padding at the back of the heel in some of my boots. Plus it tightens up the area a bit, like ribbing, which helps with holdint it snugger around the back of the heel than a plain flap.
That said, I've done every single variation listed, depending on the yarn, who it's going to, and what I'm feeling like doing. But if forced to pick one, I'm more likely to do a slip stitch heel with a stockinette turn than a plain heel.
I'm a huge fan of knitting socks (especially plain vanilla ones) because of the convenience - they fit in my pocket, they're light enough to knit as I'm walking (albeit slowly), etc. HOWEVER, for the last several years I've mostly knit for my husband (I've worked out his favourite) and my kids (I don't care how they last, because the kids will outgrown them first, even with handing them down).
When I was making socks for someone else recently, I was actually following a pattern (I know, I'm as shocked as you. If it helps, I didn't actually follow it more I read the pattern after getting a stitch count and lace pattern from it) and made the conscious decision to skip the slip-stitch heel flap, in part because I don't see the point - I don't do reinforced heel flaps, and they've never worn out. It's still always under the foot that wears out.
So question for everyone:
I see no point in separating out non-knitters, knitters who don't make socks, and people who only knit non-flap heels, so there's only the one vanilla extract option.

I don't have pets, but I frequently care for my friends' pets. This is my buddy's derpy old man, Ruger. He's a goofy and often grumpy 13 year old who needs to regularly check his pee-mail around the block, grumble at ornary neighbour dogs, and yell for treats.
He's the cutest dog I've ever met and has me wrapped around his tippity tappity toes.

People are really fucking weird sometimes, and I'm really exhausted of dealing with how fucking weird they can be in my direction.
Today is the last day of September, 2024.
Show me your pets. Please add them to this post bc I have images off in asks. 💗

In many US states, this week is your last chance to register for the upcoming election.
Please don’t let this wait. Please go get registered—or if you’re registered already, check your registration to make sure it is still valid. Numerous states have been purging “ineligible voters”: so please doublecheck that you haven’t been purged by mistake
If you’re all set, then please encourage everyone you know to register, or to check their own registrations.
Here’s where to start: Vote.gov
