Khruangbin - Con Todo El Mundo (Dead Oceans, 2018)
Great (mosty) instrumental psych rock and funk with a nice backbeat groove. These three amazing musicians put it DOWN. If you are still sleeping on this band please check them out ASAP.
Favorite Tracks: Evan Finds the Third Room, Maria Tambien, Lady and Man

Dizzy Reece - Blues in Trinity (Blue Note, 1959)
I bought this on a whim because I love Donald Byrd, but this is a great jazz album. Pretty standard sound for late 50’s bop, but this trumpeter was in the London Jazz scene instead of New York, which gives it a different flavor. Also the tunes are just so freaking good!!

Silvertones - Silver Bullets (Trojan Records, 1973)
Some groovin’ reggae tunes by Lee Perry-produced Silvertones. The riddims bounce and vocals pop with some pretty harmonies courtesy of the trio. A nice cover of “Sugar Sugar” keeps me goin even in the rudest of times.

Helen Merrill - with Clifford Brown (Verve, 1955)
Seven jazz standards by this expressive and gentle singer. Not too familiar with her history but she grew up in NYC and crossed paths with many legendary musicians, including Clifford Brown, who accompanies her on this record,
A great set of tunes to sooth you and set you right

Tenement - Napalm Dream (Mandible Records, 2011)
Another big one for me. The first record I heard from Tenement was Predatory Headlights, but this one also has a special place in my heart. Takes me back to being newly married, biking around downtown, kind of growing up a bit post-college. Got to see these guys at a music fest in Portland, but need them to start touring again soon so I can see them live again!!
The tunes on Napalm Dream are amazing, great hooks, still aggressive and just hard rocking. It’s pop punk for hardcore kids and it’s incredible.
Fav tracks: “Earwig”, “Rock Eating People”, “Running into Mirrors”, “Simple Things (Can Seem So Involved)”

Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold (What’s Your Rupture?, 2012)
This is a big one for me y’all. When I first got introduced to this band from some friends, I had a feeling this would be a group I’d mess with for a long time. The songs had this great punk energy, while also having some incredible songwriting, and an effortless “cool” I just can’t find anywhere else.
Makes sense that PC is a New York by-way of Texas band, I feel like you can hear those southwestern roots in their NYC punk approach. All of the songs on this one are amazing. Track for track probably my favorite of theirs, but Wide Awake is great as well.
I’ve seen this band a few times and each set has been amazing. Drove up to Gainesville, FL in 2015 to see them, then caught them at Project Pabst Fest in Portland, Oregon in 2016 (such a sick fest!). When they finally came thru Orlando in 2017 touring behind Human Performance, I was a little sick but in the crowd vibing. Last show I saw was right before they released Wide Awake, when they opened for Ty Segall at Levitation Fest in Austin. What a set! I could tell they were going to stretch their sound a bit, but I wasn’t concerned about them losing their fire.
This is the genesis for me, and a lot of their fans. Fast, hooky tunes with great lyrics and no-nonsense arrangements. I could go on and on, but this record really brings it every time!! Please listen to all this band’s albums.

Slow Mass - On Watch (Landland Colportage, 2018)
What a unique record. Kind of punky, kind of indie folk, really noisy. I guess you can call it post-hardcore? Male and Female lead vocals is always a nice touch as well, and these ppl have some serious chops. Saw this group with fellow Chicago rockers, Great Deceivers (R.I.P.) back in 2017. Good shit kids

Disq - Collector (Saddle Creek, 2020)
Some sad tunes for a frustrating year. Beautiful, angsty melodies and incredible hooks from this young midwestern band. “Daily Routine” and “Loneliness” are modern classics.

Pearl & The Oysters -Canned Music (Croque Macadam, 2018)
Beautiful, catchy tunes from this Parisian-Floridian duo. A little surfy, a little indie pop, a little jazzy, with some fun electronic keyboards, makes this one of my favs. They moved to LA this year, but to me they’ll always be one of Gainesville’s brightest.

Thundercat - It Is What It Is (Brainfeeder Records, 2020)
Bruner does it again! After the always excellent Drunk, Thundercat is back with more bouncing bass, banging beats, and plenty of hooks to go around. “Dragonball Durag’, “Black Qualls”, and “I Love Louis Cole” are all jams. “Funny Thing” also is a short ditty with some fun falsettos. All around great listen, one of my favorites for 2020!

Willie Dixon - I Am The Blues (Columbia, 1970)
Great comp on the iconic Chicago Blues singer. If you listen to any classic rock you’ll know a lot of these songs. I’m not as well versed in blues music as I should be, but these tunes were a great start when I first started collecting vinyl. The back door man never disappoints.

White Denim - Stiff (Downtown Records, 2016)
The Austin, Texas rock n roll group pumps up the jams on this album. A lot of free-wheeling, southern rock, psych, punk rock energy. The songs all have great hooks and musical heroics.
I’m lucky to have been acquainted with James and Steve (guitar & bass) through a mutual friend, and they are some seriously nice dudes. We got to visit and hang at their show space and studio, Radio Milk last time I was in the ATX. Hope I get to head back that way soon...

Funkadelic - Let’s Take It To The Stage (Westbound Records, 1975)
The other side of the coin. I probably prefer Funkadelic to be honest, but both of George’s groups are amazin. Great grooves, funky basslines, and some memorable tunes. “Good to Your Earhole” is a classic on this one

Parliament - The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein (Casablanca Records, 1976)
George Clinton & Co. always bring the HEAT. B Side track 1, “Do That Stuff” is an all-time great. Love the psychedelic funky sounds they bring.

Wreckless Eric - S/T (Stiff Records, 1978)
Early UK punk/powerpop at it’s finest. Catchy tracks, snotty attitude, high energy. Think Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks, Nick Lowe and you’ve got a decent idea. Check it if you haven’t!

Thee Oh Sees - Castlemania (In The Red Records, 2011)
Aggressive, psychedelic, acoustic garage rock from one of the best in the game. They’ve put out so much stuff since this one, but nothing in their discography sounds quite like this. Definitely letting their freak flag fly, this one sounds like the inflection point between their early acoustic-based folky stuff and their psych garage punk stuff from 2013-2016. Bangers on this one, and 3 trippy covers to end it all off. A must listen for sure - czech it!
