Russia continues to feel the pain of drone strikes by Ukraine. 🇺🇦👏💙💛🙏🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . Ukrainian drones targeted the Tatsinskaya railway station in Russia’s Rostov Oblast overnight on Aug. 5, local media reported.
The railway station acts as a logistics hub for nearby oil infrastructure and is used to transport grain.
Russian gasoline prices hit a record high, with the cost of Ai-95 gasoline hitting a record level on the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange (SPIMEX) amid Ukrainian strikes on Moscow’s oil infrastructure.
At least 10 explosions occurred throughout Rostov Oblast as air defenses responded to the drone attack, local media reported.
In the town of Millerovo, power outages reportedly occurred. Mobile networks partially shut down in the region, the electric utility company Donenergo said.
Ukraine’s military has not commented on the attack, and the claims could not be independently verified.
Rostov Oblast acting Governor Yuriy Slyusar in the morning of Aug. 5 reported that Russia’s military «repelled a massive air attack» in the Bely Kalitva, Tatsinsky, Chertkovsky, and Millerovsky districts of the oblast.
«At a farmstead in Verkhnetalovka, Millerovsky district, a substation caught fire,» with the blaze later extinguished, he said.
Another fire broke out and was quickly put out near the Tatsinskaya railway station, with a canopy in a home’s yard burning, Slyusar said.
No one was injured in the drone attack, he reported.
Tatsinskaya is located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Ukraine’s border with Russia and approximately 305 kilometers (189 miles) from Ukrainian-held territory near Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast.
Ukraine regularly strikes military infrastructure deep within Russia in an effort to diminish Moscow’s fighting power, as it continues to wage its war.

#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . Drones operated by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) struck five Russian fighter jets overnight on Aug. 4 at an airfield in Saky, a city in Russian-occupied Crimea, the service said.
Ukrainian drones, in a Special Operations Center “A” mission, destroyed a Su-30SM aircraft, damaged another, hit three Su-24s, and struck an aviation weapons depot.
The Saky airbase plays a critical role in Russia’s military operations in the Black Sea, and the damage from the Ukrainian strike is considered “significant,” with a single Su-30SM jet valued between $35 million and $50 million, according to the SBU.
“The successful special operation carried out by the SBU in Saky marks another step toward weakening the enemy’s capacity to wage its war of aggression against Ukraine,” SBU said.
The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the claims.
Russia has not officially commented on the reported strikes.

Overnight on August 2, 2025, Ukrainian drones caused people at several sites in Russia to be removed from their comfort zones. 🇺🇦👏💙💛🙏🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . A series of drone attacks targeted industrial facilities in Russia’s Ryazan, Penza, Samara and Voronezh oblasts overnight on Aug. 2, Ukraine’s General Staff reported.
In Ryazan, an oil refinery was reportedly struck, with videos shared on social media showing a large pillar of fire near the site.
Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov said debris from a drone fell on the territory of an unspecified enterprise and that emergency crews were addressing the damage.
In Penza, the Elektropribor plant was allegedly targeted. Russian Telegram channels reported five explosions over the city. Regional officials have not publicly commented on the incident.
In Samara Oblast, the Novokuibyshevsky oil refinery, located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the city of Samara, was reportedly on fire following a drone strike. Videos posted on local Telegram channels appeared to show flames rising from the refinery.
Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev confirmed a drone strike in the region but did not name the specific facility. He said mobile internet access has been temporarily restricted and that the Samara airport was closed following the incident.
Ukrainian drones also targeted the Annanefteprodukt fuel and lubricants storage base near the village of Anna in Voronezh Oblast, the General Staff said.

“Just a day after Trump’s announcement, Reuters reported that Indian state refiners had halted Russian oil purchases in the past week. According to Bloomberg, the Indian government instructed oil companies to prepare plans for alternative supplies.” ~ @kyivindependent_official 🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇸
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . U.S. President Donald Trump’s India tariffs have shown Moscow’s allies that he will follow through with his threat to impose secondary tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil, though doubts remain about the practicalities of implementing them, analysts have told the Kyiv Independent.
Escalating pressure on countries that continue buying Russian oil, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Indian imports, a policy that came into effect on Aug.1.
“They have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of energy, along with China,” Trump said on July 30.
Just a day after Trump’s announcement, Reuters reported that Indian state refiners had halted Russian oil purchases in the past week. According to Bloomberg, the Indian government instructed oil companies to prepare plans for alternative supplies.
Alexandra Filippenko, an American studies expert, said that while India has maintained ties with Russia, U.S. influence remains far more decisive.
"The American market is, of course, very important for India — far more important than Russia, and far more important than cheap Russian oil," she told the Kyiv Independent.
The decision to impose tariffs on New Delhi came just a day after Trump announced that secondary tariffs targeting Moscow — and impacting its trading partners like China, India, and Brazil — would take effect on Aug. 8 unless a deal to end the war in Ukraine is reached.
If countries like India continue purchasing Russian oil, they could face up to a 100% tariff on exports to the U.S., potentially driving up prices for American buyers and putting pressure on Indian exporters.
"Trump is clearly showing that he's ready to impose tariffs," Filippenko said.

“[Putin] will only end his terror if we break the spine of his economy, which already has systemic problems, as well as deprive his war budget of financing. The United States, Europe, and the G7 have the necessary strength to accomplish this.” ~ Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha 🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇦
#Repost @mfa_ukraine with @use.repost_ . . . Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha: “President Trump’s stance toward Moscow is realistic and firm in light of Putin’s rejection of peace efforts. We appreciate his clarity and strength.
Putin is rejecting a ceasefire, avoiding a leaders’ meeting, and prolonging the war. He will only end his terror if we break the spine of his economy, which already has systemic problems, as well as deprive his war budget of financing. The United States, Europe, and the G7 have the necessary strength to accomplish this.
The maximum synchronization of sanctions is critical. Right now, we can see momentum. The time has come to consolidate a single and strong sanctions fist and hit Russia’s war budget with full force.
Russian officials recently boasted that they were fighting alone against the entire West. They need this cheap propaganda to explain to their people why such a big country as Russia has not achieved a single strategic goal in its war against a much smaller Ukraine for over three years.
But if they see themselves as lone heroes confronting the entire West, let them feel the entire West’s consolidated strength through maximum sanctions pressure.
In Ukraine, we diligently align our national sanctions with those of our allies. In recent weeks, we have quickly synchronized previous EU sanctions packages. This work continues. We also take steps together with our allies to close loopholes and disrupt Russia’s access to technology.
The next weeks must see maximum synchronization of all partners’ sanctions against Russia to increase the cost of war for the aggressor. We are actively working with partners to achieve this.”

“Hundreds of domestic and international flights were canceled or diverted, stranding thousands of passengers and exposing a vulnerability the Kremlin can no longer conceal.” ~ @kyivindependent_official 🇺🇦👏💙💛🙏🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_
As Ukraine continues its long-range drone campaign, major airports across Russia have been repeatedly forced to suspend operations, reroute flights, and ground aircraft.
In July alone, nearly every day of the month, at least one formally operating Russian airport shut down temporarily.
Hundreds of domestic and international flights were canceled or diverted, stranding thousands of passengers and exposing a vulnerability the Kremlin can no longer conceal.
“This hits the morale of the Russian people,” Ivan Stupak, a military commentator and former officer of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), told the Kyiv Independent.
“They’re used to seeing the war only through YouTube — so they just turn off YouTube, and suddenly it feels like the war is not real.
“But with what we’re doing, we’re sending a clear message — the war is very real, and your comfort lies in our hands.”

Ukrainian drones rained on Russia’s annual Navy Day parade, so it had to be cancelled. 🇺🇦👏💙💛🙏🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . Russia canceled its annual Navy Day parade in St. Petersburg for the first time, citing security concerns amid a wave of drone attacks that disrupted airports and railways across western Russia overnight on July 27, local officials and Russian media reported.
The decision to cancel the Navy Day parade in St. Petersburg, an event traditionally held on the last Sunday of July, was announced by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on July 27, who said it was made “for security reasons.”
Despite the cancellation, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly traveled to the city to mark the occasion.
The United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry said it is “almost certain” that Navy Day parades originally planned for July 27 were canceled across Russia due to force protection concerns. While the main naval parade in St. Petersburg was reduced in scale in 2024, this marks the first full cancellation since its inception in 2017.
Russia has reported a growing number of drone incursions into its territory in recent months. While Kyiv has been targeting infrastructure critical to Russia’s war effort, Moscow has significantly intensified missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, frequently targeting civilian infrastructure and causing numerous civilian casualties.

“[T]he creation of new mobile maintenance and operations modules — to both maintain and equip the aircraft and to conduct operations — will help [Ukraine’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets] evade Russian ballistic missile strikes.” ~ @kyivindependent_official 🇺🇦🛩️💙💛🛩️🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . Ukraine’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets have been given a badly-needed boost with the creation of new mobile maintenance and operations modules which will help them evade Russian ballistic missile strikes.
Developed by the Come Back Alive charity foundation and Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, the two types of mobile modules contain everything needed to both maintain and equip the aircraft and to conduct operations.
F-16 fighter jets are crucial for Ukraine as they significantly strengthen its air defense and help counter ongoing Russian drone and missile attacks, which target both Ukrainian cities and military objects such as the airfields where F-16s are stationed.
“There is only a short time lag between finding the F-16s and then launching ballistic missiles,” Peter Layton, former Royal Australian Air Force officer and Associate Fellow at RUSI, told the Kyiv Independent.
“The key to F-16 survival when on the ground is not being found,” he added.
The extensive amount of crew and equipment needed to maintain F-16s has up until now limited where they could be deployed, but Layton said the new mobile complexes would open up the use of “less likely airfields, such as short and civilian air strips, or remote parts of large military airbases.”
“The F-16s are then widely dispersed so if one is found and targeted not all will be destroyed. It is a shell game,” he added.

“We are working on priority issues. Our priority is always people, ceasefire and meeting of leaders.” ~ Rustem Umerov, National Security and Defense Council Secretary and leader of the Ukrainian delegation 🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . Ukrainian and Russian delegations held a third round of peace talks in Istanbul on July 23, with the meeting lasting less than an hour.
During the talks, Ukraine proposed holding a summit between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin before the end of August, according to National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, who led the Ukrainian delegation.
“We are working on priority issues. Our priority is always people, ceasefire and meeting of leaders,” Umerov said after the talks.
According to Umerov, Ukraine and Russia agreed to conduct a humanitarian exchange involving more than 1,200 people. Zelensky previously identified the return of abducted Ukrainian children and an immediate ceasefire as key priorities in the talks.
Vladimir Medinsky, Putin’s aide and head of the Russian delegation, said Moscow proposed forming three working groups to meet online and address political, military, and humanitarian issues.
Commenting on a possible leaders’ meeting, Medinsky said it was crucial to first determine the topics for discussion.
The Ukrainian delegation also included Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak, First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya, and deputy military intelligence chief Vadym Skybytskyi.
