Canadian government designates the "Proud Boys" as Terrorist organization.
The Canadian government designated the Proud Boys as a terrorist entity, noting they played a pivotal role in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. TORONTO - The Canadian government designated the Proud Boys group as a terrorist entity on Wednesday, noting they played a pivotal role in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. The Proud Boys have faced increased scrutiny after seizing on the former Trump administration’s policies and was a major agitator during earlier protests and the Capitol riot on Jan. 6. The Proud Boys is a far-right, male chauvinist extremist group known for engaging in violent clashes at political rallies. Canada is the first country to designate them as a terrorist entity. The terrorist designation means the group may have assets seized and face harsher terrorism-related criminal penalties. A government official said just because they are a member doesn't mean they will be charged with a crime, but if they do engage in violent acts they could be charged with terrorist crimes. Sending money to the organization or buying Proud Boys paraphernalia would also be a crime. "The group and its members have openly encouraged, planned, and conducted violent activities against those they perceive to be opposed to their ideology and political beliefs," the Canadian government said in briefing materials. "The group regularly attends Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests as counter-protesters, often engaging in violence targeting BLM supporters. Read the full article

Democrats set unveil $3,600 child benefit relief package Today
According to an article by CNN I read, the House Democratic leaders will unveil legislation Monday that would give millions of families at least $3,000 per child, advancing a key provision. Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee Richard Neal, who is leading the crafting of the legislation for the stimulus package, will introduce the enhanced Child Tax Credit bill. "The pandemic is driving families deeper and deeper into poverty, and it's devastating. We are making the Child Tax Credit more generous, more accessible, and by paying it out monthly, this money is going to be the difference in a roof over someone's head or food on their table," Neal said in a statement provided to CNN. CNN obtained a copy of the 22-page bill. The Washington Post first reported on it. The legislation would provide $3,600 per child under the age of six and $3,000 per child age six through 17 for a single year. The full benefit is available to single parents earning up to $75,000 annually and for couples earning up to $150,000. Payments would phase out after those thresholds. Families can receive the Child Tax Credit payments on a monthly basis, which advocates say will make it easier to pay their obligations compared to getting a lump sum at tax time. Stay tuned for an update after the meeting today. Read the full article

Google stops donations to U.S. Congress members who voted against election results
According to a Reuters article I read today, Alphabet Inc’s Google said on Monday it will not make contributions from its political action committee this election cycle to any Congress member who voted against certifying the results of the presidential election. Earlier this month, following the violent storming of the U.S. Capitol, the tech giant had paused all political contributions to reassess its policies toward political contribution. “Following that review, the NetPAC board has decided that it will not be making any contributions this cycle to any member of Congress who voted against certification of the election results,” a Google representative said in a statement. Hundreds of former President Donald Trump’s supporters headed to the Capitol Building after a speech from the former President, on Jan. 6 in a bid to overturn his election defeat, ended with citizens battling police in the hallways and delaying the result of the electoral vote count. It is not yet known, how many of the people who rallied and broke in to the Capitol are actually Trump supporters, or if they had their own agenda. Following the incident, Republicans in Congress faced blowback from several corporate firms who paused campaign donations and said they were reviewing their policies. Amazon.com Inc, AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp, Verizon Communications Inc are among the many big companies who have threatened to throttle fundraising resources for Republicans. Read the full article

Nancy Pelosi's husband $1 million on Tesla stock
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband has placed up to $1 million worth of bullish bets on Tesla stock, the politician revealed in a financial disclosure form last week. Paul Pelosi, who runs an investment firm, bought 25 call options on Tesla stock with a strike price of $500 and an expiration date of March 18, 2022. He spent between $500,001 and $1 million on them on December 22. The call options give him the right to buy 2,500 Tesla shares at $500 each at any point before they expire in March 2022. That may sound like a fantastic deal with shares in Elon Musk's electric-vehicle company changing hands at about $850 on Monday. However, Pelosi will have paid a premium for the options, so Tesla stock would have to climb before they become profitable to exercise. Pelosi likely opted to buy long-term equity anticipation security, or LEAP, options, as they cost less up front than buying Tesla shares directly while granting exposure to a stock that skyrocketed by about 700% last year. The $500 strike price means the options are "in the money" and won't be worthless even if Tesla's stock price treads water or falls by a few hundred dollars by the time they expire. The veteran politician's spouse also spent up to $500,000 for 100 call options on Apple stock with a strike price of $100 and an expiration date of January 21, 2022. He plowed as much as $1 million into 100 call options on Disney stock with a strike price of $100 and an expiration date of March 18, 2022. Read the full article

Walmart announced robot-staffed warehouses to handle online orders
Walmart has planned to set up small local warehouses staffed with robots to handle surging online orders, competing with Amazon as both companies seek to cut delivery time and costs by moving logistics closer to where customers live. Walmart’s warehouses will sit within or next to existing stores and will use autonomous robots to collect items such as boxed and frozen food for online orders. Human workers will handle more complex tasks such as choosing fresh produce or larger items. Orders will then be picked up at the store by customers or delivery workers. “This whole process can take just a few minutes from the time the order is placed to the time it’s ready for a customer or delivery driver to collect,” wrote Tom Ward, head of customer product for Walmart US, in a blog post on Wednesday. Walmart also plans to experiment with automated pick-up systems that would present the goods at a hatch once a customer scanned a code on their smartphone. As well as handling groceries, the robots will be able to pack “thousands of the items we know customers want most, from consumables to electronics”, Mr Ward wrote. The move turns local stores into so-called micro-fulfilment centers designed to lower the cost and time of delivery — the final, most expensive stage of an ecommerce order as it reaches a customer’s home. Innovations Aiming to Reduce CO2 Emission
Carbon dioxide (CO2) makes up the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions from the sector, but smaller amounts of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are also emitted. These gases are released during the combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, to produce electricity. In October 2018, the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report stating that Earth has about a dozen years before average global temperatures exceed 1.5 Celsius, if significant reductions in carbon emissions aren’t made. Some businesses are heeding the warnings and focusing on sustainable development in technology that improves energy efficiency or reduces emissions. From better ways to store renewable energy to improving methods of capturing carbon from the atmosphere, environmental tech is outpacing policy in the race to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2). Here are three already out of the gate. Pumped Hydroelectric Storage When people think of batteries, they may think of the lithium-ion ones in mobile phones or the lead-acid batteries in cars. Pumped hydroelectric storage is also a battery but on a much larger scale. It requires a hill, pumps and two reservoirs of water — one at the top of the hill and another at the bottom. It’s often paired with renewable energy, such as hydroelectric, solar and wind, as a way to store energy on a huge scale for the utility grid. According to the U.S. Read the full article

Tesla Recalls Nearly 135,000 Cars for Safety Concern
This is one of the most important safety reminders Tesla has ever encountered. However, the number of vehicles recalled is less than the 158,000 that the regulator had requested from Tesla in mid-January. Tesla will recall nearly 135,000 Model S and Model X cars in the United States for a safety issue related to the onboard computer after an alert issued in mid-January by the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA. The recall involves 134,951 cars, according to a letter from NHTSA to Tesla published on Tuesday. The recall affects Model S sedans produced between 2012 and 2018, as well as Model X city SUVs produced between 2016 and 2018, whose onboard computer is equipped with a Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. This is one of the most important safety reminders Tesla has ever encountered. However, the number of vehicles recalled is less than the 158,000 that the regulator had requested from Tesla in mid-January. Replace a part of the on-board computer The NHTSA letter does not explain this difference. Tesla was not obligated to comply with the federal agency's request, but in this case it was obliged to provide an explanation to NHTSA, which then made the decision. For comparison, 158,000 cars represent nearly one-third of all cars delivered by the manufacturer in 2020. Tesla will be required to replace a part of the onboard computer in the actual recalled vehicle This defect , NHTSA details in its correspondence. Read the full article

PROGESTERONE
Preview in new tab OTHER NAME(S): Corpus Luteum Hormone, Hormone de Grossesse, Hormone du Corps Jaune, Hormone Lutéale, Hormone Progestative, Luteal Hormone, Luteohormone, Lutine, NSC-9704, Pregnancy Hormone, Pregnanedione, Prégnanedione, Progestational Hormone, Progesterona, Progestérone, Progesteronum, 4-Pregnene-3; 20-Dione. Progesterone is a hormone that occurs naturally in the body. It can also be made in a laboratory. "Progestin" is a general term for a substance that causes some or all of the biologic effects of progesterone. The term "progestin" is sometimes used to refer to the progesterone made in the laboratory that is in oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. However, all progesterone and progestin products are made in the laboratory. The term "natural progesterone" is really a misnomer. "Natural progesterones," including the prescription products Crinone and Prometrium, are made from a chemical called diosgenin that is isolated from wild yam or soy. In the laboratory, diosgenin is converted to progesterone. The human body is not able to make progesterone from diosgenin, so eating wild yam or soy will not boost your progesterone levels. Over-the-counter (OTC) progesterone products may not contain progesterone concentrations as labeled. Also, topical progesterone products (preparations applied to the skin) marketed as cosmetics require no FDA approval prior to marketing. Read the full article

National Guard: President Biden apologises over troops sleeping in the parking garage. While former President Trump Offers His D.C. Hotel To National Guard Troops Who Were Kicked Out Of Capitol Building
President Joe Biden has apologised after some members of the National Guard stationed at the US Capitol were pictured sleeping in parking garage. More than 25,000 troops were deployed to Washington DC for his inauguration after violence earlier this month. Images spread on Thursday showing them forced to rest in a nearby parking garage after lawmakers returned. The conditions sparked anger among politicians, and some state governors recalled troops over the controversy. Mr Biden called the chief of the National Guard Bureau on Friday to apologise and ask what could be done, according to US media reports. First Lady Jill Biden also visited some of the troops to thank them personally, bringing biscuits from the White House as a gift. "I just wanted to come today to say thank you to all of you for keeping me and my family safe," she said. The photographs showing hundreds of troops in a parking garage went viral on Thursday and sparked outrage. Meanwhile, several state governor’s have ordered their troops to return home. BEST GARLIC SAUCE
FOR MEDITERRANEAN DISHES, SHAWARMA, CHICKEN KABOB, OR OTHER DISHES. READY IN: 5mins SERVES: 14 YIELD: 14 2-Tbsp Servings INGREDIENTS - 3 cups corn oil (Mazola is a must for this as it rarely works well with other brands, but see my note below) - 1 cup lemon juice - 1 head garlic (large size) - 2 egg whites - 1 teaspoon salt - Place ingredients in a blender, blend till smooth & chill for several hours before use to allow the full flavor to develop. Done! - Some do not add egg whites & they pour the oil in slowly so it thickens. I have no patience for that. When I have tried it that way, I could never get my garlic sauce thick. Adding the egg whites is technically cheating, but it works every time. - *Note From Me* ~ Although unable to find Mazola corn oil here, I can happily report that I have now made a half recipe of this sauce using my immersion blender in a wide-mouth glass jar w/a lid so it could be capped, chilled & stored. I used the *Euro Shopper* brand corn oil, recipe (including the egg whites) + the thin stream addition of the oil method w/excellent results ~ a richly garlic-flavored & thick sauce. I did add some seasoning salt to better match the Icelandic garlic sauce that is sold commercially & very popular to serve w/lamb (& other meats). - *Note Regarding Serving Suggestions* ~ Serve chilled or at room temp: 1) With grilled, marinated or roasted meats (including chicken, kebabs, etc.), Read the full article

Paycheck Protection Program: PPP loan portal reopens amid ongoing COVID-19 pandemic
https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/coronavirus-relief-options/paycheck-protection-program WASHINGTON - A loan program meant to help small businesses stay afloat and pay their employees has returned five months after its first two rounds of funding ended. The U.S. Small Business Administration and the U.S. Treasury Department relaunched the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP, loan portal Monday. The loans, which can be forgiven, will have five-year terms and carry an interest rate of 1%. The PPP is being restarted under the coronavirus relief bill Congress approved in late December, providing for $284 billion in new loans. The first two rounds, which began April 3 and ended Aug. 8, gave out more than 5.2 million loans worth a cumulative $525 billion. The first round of the program saw overwhelming demand and the Small Business Administration approved $349 billion in loans in just two weeks. Trump signed the latest COVID-19 relief bill into law in December after holding out for several days. The president said he wanted to increase stimulus checks, also part of the bill, from $600 to $2,000 per eligible person. He also cited other line items of spending with which he disagreed as the impetus for his delay in signing the legislation. Read the full article

Smells that Cause Migraines
Migraines are classified as a neurological condition that cause a painful, pulsating headache, usually on one side of the head or face. Migraines are typically preceded by an aura, which is a visual disturbance of flashing lights or blind spots in the field of vision. Migraines often interfere with daily activities as they are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, as well as extreme sensitivity to light, sound, and odors.Patients suffering from migraines often find that avoiding the following odors can decrease the symptoms and frequency of migraine onset 1. PerfumesWhile many feel that perfume or aftershave lotion add a positive presentation to the world. These smells can be quite offensive to people who suffer from migraines. In fact, many patients report that perfumes trigger migraine attacks only after a few minutes of exposure. 2. Paint thinnerIf you work in a shop or environment that is filled with chemical agents, like paint thinner. Smelling these harsh scents throughout the day could certainly trigger a migraine. 3. Cigarette smokeIf you smoke or happen to be around someone who smokes cigarettes, a pipe, or even a vape pen, you may suffer a migraine. This is because nicotine in tobacco products causes the blood vessels to become narrow, thus reducing blood flow to the brain and triggering a migraine 4. CandlesMany folks light candles in their homes, not realizing that the odor produced may cause migraines for other occupants of the residence. Read the full article
