After I first listened to the album, I needed more of it, so I went looking for more content. That’s when I noticed that after “Not Sorry For Loving You,” people were practically turning Calypso into the villain (and other such rude things) because Odysseus told her he was married. She knew this from the start, yet she still didn’t understand why he wouldn’t love her.
I listened to the Vengeance Saga on Halloween, just a few hours after it was released (with my husband's noise-canceling headphones – girl, GIRL! ~I was totally in the zone!!).
And yes, he did tell her. It’s not his fault if she doesn’t understand.
But I don’t think she was necessarily evil (maybe a little bit of a red flag) or that it was all her fault, either.
She was abandoned on that island as a young child (according to the Greek mythology retelling in the musical). No one can reach or leave her island unless a god intervenes. She’s been alone on that island for a hundred years.
Can you imagine growing up in isolation for a hundred years without a single person to talk to or touch? (True, she had Ouranos and Helios, but they’re more like the sky and sun than actual friends… still, though).
I can’t blame her for having terrible social skills, no understanding of boundaries, or a complete grasp of what “no” means. I’m honestly surprised she even knows what love is (if she even does? It’s debatable whether she loves him romantically or not). Of course she wouldn’t fully understand when he said no.
And in the end, Odysseus actually says, “I love you, but not in the way you want me to.” He understands her, he’s always polite to her, and he tries to explain that she doesn’t know what he’s gone through!
She wasn’t bad; she just lacked basic social skills because she’s traumatized (as is almost every character in this musical, except Hermes and Helios – they’re just living their best lives) and probably a little neurodivergent.
