I reblogged this so long ago lmao but If On A Winter's Night A Traveller by Italo Calvino fits this perfectly!! Im reading it for school. A pain to write an essay about, but best enjoyed slowly and over multiple re reads. Very clever and very well-written.

I want my writing to be smart.

Here’s what I mean: I want to write something you can understand on the first go, no problem. But then, the more you think about it, the more little things you realize. Are those little things essential to grasping the plot? No, but they enhance it. Most importantly, you feel smart for pointing them out, and I feel smart for writing them.

Hello!! Writing this to let whoever follows me on here know that I have moved to a new blog which is @hello-skyscapes and i probably won't update this any more. I'll hold on to this blog for a few more weeks (since i think its still linked in some places...) but will delete it later on.

Also I am more active on twitter nowadays @/skyscapes_ ! My account is deactivated rn since I have exams but if you want to find me thats the place to go :)

Not to be a romantic but scrolling through this blog does make me kinda emotional lol. My YOI fic from last year was the first time in a really long time that I did something I truly enjoyed. I'm not sure if anyone who followed me back then is still reading my nonsense (if you are youre a real one ily) but every comment/ interaction I got made me so happy and really motivated me to keep writing. So I am honestly so grateful to the few on this account for that <3

Anyways. I suppose this is the end(ish) for alexfinallywrites. Can't wait to share everything I've been working on soon! see y'all on the flip side ig :)

i see posts sometimes that say things like “wouldn’t it be cool if ao3 would recommend you fics similar to the one you just read?” or “wouldn’t it be cool if ao3 had a function similar to spotify wrapped that showed you your fic reading habits over the year?” etc. and while on one hand, yes, i can see how these functions might be neat & fun & helpful, i think the fact that ao3 *doesn’t* do any of these typical media website things is actually utterly spectacular

like, i enjoy looking at my spotify wrapped as much as the next person, but when you start to think about that, it is honestly pretty horrifying that spotify collects & stores all this data about its users & can produce it at a moment’s notice.  and netflix is not recommending you shows because it actually cares that you watch something you enjoy.  it’s recommending them because in the digital age, attention is money & every website is fighting for as much of yours as it can get.

the fact that a website hosting as much media as ao3 doesn’t try to analyze or predict or manipulate your content consumption in any way is truly an oasis in a landscape where user data is the most valuable commodity around.  ao3 gives all of the agency to its users & i don’t think we realize just how rare that is.  you go looking for the content you want.  you sort and filter based on your preferences.  you subscribe to the story or author updates you’d like to see.  so on and so forth.  nothing is recommended for you.  no algorithm is trying to maximize the time you spend on the website.  you engage with it completely on your own terms.  and given the way most media websites choose to operate, that is nothing short of a miracle.

hey tumblr!!

it’s aya aka redluxite/wordstruck here ^__^ i know things are difficult all over and this is very sudden, and i hate asking, but i really need help. my IRL situation has reached a point where i cannot stay in my family’s house much longer. 

i’m queer and closeted; i have anxiety, depression, and other disabilities; and i’ve been emotionally traumatized to the point that doors opening and footsteps have me panicky. i’m not claiming abuse, but there’s been a lot of damage done over the last several years, and i can’t begin putting my life back together in this house with the people who’ve cause much of that trauma.

my current salary isn’t enough to live on, and bc of the suddenness of this event + the pandemic i have very little savings, so if you’re willing, any little bit will help. i need the money mostly to leave this house and afford somewhere to stay while i figure out a more permanent situation for myself (including another job that pays more and a sustainable living situation). rn my target is USD2000, which will help cover rent/deposit, moving costs, basic household furniture and appliances, other necessities like wifi, and food expenses.

i can’t take on more commissions or requests at the moment unless people are willing to wait for me to fulfill them. and honestly i feel terrible for even asking for donations at a time like this, but i also can’t be here anymore. either i get kicked out, or i leave.

so if you’re willing and able, i’d appreciate any and all help. even sharing this post and the links would mean a lot. i’m terrified of leaving, but at this point anywhere is better than here.

Hello Patrick McHale, I was wondering if you could take the time to answer my question. Did the team of Over the Garden Wall ever throw around the idea of leaving Wirt in the Unknown, and just Greg making it back? Did you guys have any other alternate ending ideas? I'd love to know, thank you for the time. (Also wondering if the black turtles held any significance... minions of the Beast perhaps? Any hints would be much loved.)

THOSE WHO HAVEN’T WATCHED THE FULL SERIES SHOULD STOP READING!

I think we talked about every possible ending imaginable. I recall being on the phone with either Amalia or Tom (maybe both) and just… like… listing out ending after ending after ending. And even after we figured out what seemed like the best solution… it kept changing as we changed little bits and pieces during the boarding process.

Early on we had Wirt and Greg getting lost on Halloween night in episode 1 (rather than a flashback in episode 9).  And at that point… in episode 10, we actually had Wirt and Greg get home during Christmas time. So when they got home no one in town had seen Wirt and Greg for MONTHS and it’s never explained. It could have been cool, but seemed too overwhelming conceptually with all the other stuff going on in the final episode.

Another ending was… to leave Wirt in the Unknown and only Greg gets back. But… it just seemed cruel and uncomfortable to split them up in the end - plus it didn’t really show Wirt’s full arc of learning to accept his responsibility of being a brother. 

Early on Wirt and Greg actually got lost in the Unknown by RIDING the little black train (rather than almost getting hit by it). That was actually the whole concept of the series - that Wirt and Greg get on a train on Halloween night, and realize it’s going to “Death” and so they jump off half-way and end up somewhere between life/death/dreams/reality.  So in the last episode we reveal that the beast is actually not a bad guy… he’s just trying to get them on the train, because that’s where they belong. Wirt and Greg realize they can either accept their fate and get on the train… or they can wander the woods and become old and crazy like the woodsman. they decide to accept their fate, and they get on the train and head off into the darkness…. We think they died. But then reveal that the train was never going to “Death” at all…. the scary place the train was going to was actually “Life”!  All along Wirt was subconsciously fighting the will to survive.  because… confronting your problems in life, for him, was more frightening than death.  I still like parts of this, but… when it comes to characters accepting their own death… it gets tricky to write it for a kids cartoon. it was also just hard to get the train concept to work without it feeling convenient and overly magical. plus a lot of people brought up similarities to Harry Potter and Spirited Away and Polar Express which turned me off the idea too.

I think i’m writing too much.  I’ll stop here.
