SAVE THE BATS!

Hi Neil, I wonder if you'd consider sharing this link? The building of the Norwich Western Link road is a huge threat to rare Barbastelle bats and other species. It will threaten the UK's LARGEST known rare bat colony. As many people who can object to the road as possible will at the very least raise awareness and hopefully cause a change :) if it was pandas and rhinos at threat we would all be up in arms, so let's do it for the bats.

A scene from Alastar's and Asher's first meeting. They shared a heartfelt hug before and got into a more personal conversation after dropping their acts around each other. Asher showed some signs of his trauma there, and Alastar offered him another hug to comfort him. Asher then wanted to thank him with a kiss on the cheek. Alastar accepted it.

"For..." He stopped for a moment, as if he wasn't really sure how to put it. "... everything. The hugs, the smiles. The joy. For being kind. I'm sorry if I'm being pushy. Can't remember the last time I had a meaningful conversation with someone. Maybe I'm just starved for it."

After hearing that Asher had no good experiences with biting or getting bitten yet, Alastar couldn't help but offer him his blood, hoping that might make him feel at least a little bit better about this topic. They eventually realized that they were evoking feelings in each other that neither of them had ever felt before.

Bat Appreciation Day

Day 0 - The day before Barovia

Our DM asked us to give them a summary of our day before Barovia, so that they could narrate how we got spirited away in the first session. Here is Alastar's day beneath the cut. Dan is Alastar's best friend and a Lycan. They joined their order together after they got freed from captivity as teenagers.

'Morning' "Hey Alastar, wake up. The sun is setting soon," a voice snapped him out of a dream. "Just 5 more minutes," Alastar murmured, and he got a shirt thrown in his face as a reply. "Alright, alright, no need to assault me, Danny," he chuckled, and got up. His comrade was waiting, tapping a foot on the ground. "Any news from the day shift?" he asked more seriously while packing his belongings. "Not really, but we might have a lead to more clues. Gotta check those out," Dan answered. "I see. Then I hope we will make some progress with those soon. The shorter those rumors spread, the better. I'm really getting tired of getting insulted, or worse, if you dare to show a tooth in a village or so," Alastar said. "For some people, prejudices are easier to believe than the truth," Dan sighed as they closed the gap between them and the rest of their group, leaving their camp behind.

'Noon' As the moon reached its highest peak, a small town came into sight. The group of five reached their destination without incidents, which was good progress for the first half of this night. As their leader talked to the local guards, explaining their identities and mission, Alastar was lost in thought. They were on their search for places where the interdimensional barriers seemed to be thinner for a while now, but no luck so far. He snapped back from his thoughts and noticed one of the guards examine him with a wary look. Alastar winked at him, which earned him a slight awkward blush from the guard as they averted their gaze. Alastar chuckled slightly, and Dan poked his side. "Come on, no time for your teasing; we have a meeting to attend." And so they proceeded to a local inn to meet their newest informant.

'Evening' "'Mists flowing in the forest deep, mysterious wanderers you seek.'" Alastar repeated in a theatrical voice, accompanied by fitting gestures, as they continued their walk through the outskirts of the town, leaving for another route further south. "Why do our informants have to be so cryptic sometimes? I mean, I get it; they are probably scared, but it’s just so frustrating for our job," he sighed, reverting to his original looks. "Why so pouty, Ally? I thought you liked yourself a good riddle," Dan teased him with a grin, but before Alastar could answer, they heard a scream in the distance. "Get ready for battle!" their leader hissed and sprinted in the direction of the scream. Alastar drew his sword, his eyes changing from red to blue and his hair from silver-white to night-sky black, while gaining slightly more length than his usual haircut. Staying undercover on missions was a top priority, his abilities came in handy for that. As he followed their captain, he saw some bandits that tried to rob what seemed to be a local farmer’s house. He stopped some feet in front of them, just dodging one guy swinging his axe into him. "Ah, so hostile. Those are really bad manners, you have there, mister," Alastar said with a grin, tapping into the magic that flowed through his veins. "I will come back to you later, we have some questions," he continued while sinking his fangs into his own hand. His enemy froze in motion and a terrified expression spread over the bandit’s face. It didn’t take the members of the order long to clean up the crime side. With the farmer’s family unharmed and the bandits tied up for the local law enforcement forces to take custody of, the group continued their march towards their next destination: one of the bigger forests of the land. They made camp as the sun started to slowly rise and Alastar yawned as he took a sip from his bloodflask. "Get some rest, I will take the first shift," Dan said as he pointed at Alastar’s hair. "No changing back?" Alastar grinned. "Why? You don’t like it? I thought it might suit me, Danny," he asked teasingly. Dan just rolled his eyes with a sigh and threw Alastar’s bedroll in his face, who chuckled and laid down, getting some rest for their next duties.

Post Session Ramblings

Potential spoilers under the cut.

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh. So much happened. We got so much lore. And the not giving a damn about anything for centuries now Rahadin actually started crying because we managed to let them talk to Sergej and aaah. They are so torn about what to do now, considering their loyalty to Strahd. I have no words, just emotions. (I'm working on doing a diary catching up with all the sessions so far to post for people interested; we are already in the middle of the campaign now, but I just want to revisit it and gush about it online.)

About Alastar

Race: Vampire (Dhampir ruleset)

Subrace abilities: Shapeshifting

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Age: 50 (visible 25, ageing half as fast as humans)

Appearance: Short white hair, red eyes, pale skin, scar over the right eye, well trained. He Loves to change his appearance and names for missions though. Always go unnoticed if you can. "It's not deception, I'm just playing a role."

Personality traits: Loyal to his allies, a bit eccentric sometimes, stern on missions, loves to tease people, has a good heart, dedicated. "If you threaten me, I will threaten you," he utters with bared teeth. [He also tries to come to terms with some traumatic events from his past, but this will be further detailed in future posts.]

Ideals: Dedicate your life to the cause. Fight evil to protect people. If you have to kill, at least do more good than harm.

Flaws: Hot blooded when enraged. Sometimes a bit too engaged in his 'roles'. How do you socialize best again? (Being thirsty sucks. Sometimes grumpy without blood for a while.)

How it started: He and members of his order were tasked with inquiring about the situation of this place called 'Barovia' that people keep hearing rumors about. Sadly, it brings some bad stereotypes regarding certain creatures of the night, that led to disturbances and casualties of good people. With the goal of stopping those rumors, they tried to track down hints and clues of this strange land and how to get there best. Alastar then got spirited away by strange mists and got separated by his group, only to find himself in Barovia with a bunch of strangers.
