Shingeki no Kyojin's Ending Interview (May 2021)

Question: Congratulations on completing Shingeki no Kyojin’s serialization! How do you feel now that you have finished writing the final chapter?

Isayama: There’s still some work left to do when it comes to putting together the final manga volume*, so I don’t actually know how a “life without deadlines" feels like yet (laughs), but by publishing the final chapter, I feel like I can finally breathe again. However, there are still several things that need to be done.

(*Translator’s note: usually, putting together a volume includes: fixing drawing mistakes, sometimes even redrawing certain scenes if the author wasn’t satisfied with how they looked/their composition, fixing text (both wording or simply changing the Japanese characters used), drawing omake/extra pages, like the High School Caste fake previews, which usually take up 2 pages, and so on. So, of the 8 extra pages he mentions below, probably only 6 at max will be used to add new original story content.)

Q: What?! What else is there to be done?

It’s been 5 years of voicing Eren Yeager. What have you enjoyed the most when voicing him?

“In general, not just for this particular work, I focus on the things that I have in common with the characters I play, but I think the most important thing is to understand the characters’ feelings, the ability to have a genuine reaction inside myself, and to move hearts. In regards to Eren, he’s an individual defined by things such as his anger towards the titans who ate his family, and his hatred for them. I think the explosive energy of these emotions should always be there.”

Hi vivi, I'm not ereri shipper but I care about the characters relationships so I used to read your ereri metas, anyway I noticed ereri's moments are mostly from Levi side, he cares, understands, guides, protects, etc. But Eren side idk it seems have almost nothing special. how do you see their relationship from Eren's side?

Hello, I have answered a similar question here!

You’re definitely not the only one under the impression that Levi is the one that cares more explicitly about Eren, than viceversa. I feel it is exactly that way.

But there are some rare moments like the ones I posted in the link above that show Eren isn’t indifferent to Levi as a person (vs just seeing Levi as a superior officer in a detached kind of way). For example, Eren worrying about Levi first and foremost in the Reiss cave, which I find hard to just dismiss as “he’s worried about his superior officer because of the mission”, because we know that Eren cares most about his friends and the people he loves personally (as everyone does, really). As soon as Eren regains consciousness, he thinks of Levi, then Armin, then the corps in general. I think it is pretty telling. You can’t force your brain to wonder about someone’s safety when you’re mostly out of it, if you don’t really care about them. 

Eren cares about Levi in a very down-to-earth way (Eren is very conscious that Levi can still get hurt both physically and emotionally) and also in a very respectful way (he wants Levi to be shown respect from other people). I find it very sweet. A different person might feel like Levi doesn’t need or require this special care or worry. But for Eren, it’s just there, naturally. It’s something that surely developed through their intense experiences in the story and became part of Eren’s character.

And also, I am now 100% sure that that moment in chapter 105, was really Eren feeling something - surprise? regret? - at being the one to have let Levi down and made Levi make such a sorrowful and distressed face.

So yeah, I’m sure Eren does care about Levi, even now. It simply is not the main focus of his character arc. On the other hand, Levi’s care for Eren is part of Levi’s character arc. That’s why the attention given to their respective feelings for the other is different.

And one last thing: I don’t write about Eren and Levi merely because I ship them. It’s my love for their canonical platonic relationship that pushes me to talk about them and that made me ship them in the first place. Most ereri shippers do care about their relationship and characterization. I understand that sometimes a shipping preference might twist the perception of canon, but this is something that happens in every ship’s community. A shipper talking about a relationship that just so happens to be their otp doesn’t lessen their authority or voice on the matter, if their opinion is expressed in a logical, factual, respectful and honest way. Just wanted to put it out there. It surely wasn’t your intention to say so! I am glad that you would ask for my opinion on this topic even if you may not like them romantically together.

Hello between eren and levi, who would you say cares for the other more?

Hi! You are one lucky person, because I made a similar poll about it a while ago, and the people have spoken!

While I worded the poll in a cheeky way (it was meant to be lighthearted, but it turned out more serious then I had predicted), the point was “who cares about the other more?”.

To me, the answer is obvious (and 40 people agree), as we have gotten A LOT more displays of care from Levi towards Eren than vice-versa. Well, I’m not sure I’ve seen Eren caring about Levi since Uprising, if I have to be honest. 

But it’s also probably because he got seriously betrayed by Levi in Shiganshina AND anyway we have been closed off from Eren’s thoughts for a while now (3 years? ah…ahah…). Though I find it kind of weird that Eren used to constantly worry about Levi’s opinion and wellbeing, and then after Uprising he stopped altogether. I don’t know, Isayama has a bad habit of picking up some relationships all of a sudden and dropping off others that were relevant until that point, and it’s been one of the few things that I’ve disliked in his writing style.

So, anyway, I took the liberty to collect some, if not all, the instances (starting from Uprising, or this post would’ve doubled in size) that can answer this better than a thousand words ever could.

Sooo I’ve seen a bit of confusion about this.

This drawing was requested by Kaji Yuki, the request itself was “Captain Eren”, it’s spelled エレン兵長 (“Eren Heichou”).

Eren fell asleep on a couch during cleaning, and he’s dreaming of being Captain, but the image of a Captain is so closely linked to Levi in his mind that he ends up looking exactly like Levi. The two bubbles say “Oh? Not bad.” but it is unclear if it’s Levi saying them in reality or if it’s Eren’s thoughts in the dream (i think the latter is more correct).

The bottom panel shows Eren sleeping and Levi staring at him (so we realize that the above panel was Eren’s dream) and he hears Eren softly mumble in his sleep “Captain…Eren…” (エレン…兵士��… -> he’s using Levi’s full title “Heishichou”).

I find it so endearing that Eren dreams of Levi during cleaning, because cleaning is often portrayed as a chore and/or a stressful time for the squad where Levi is concerned, but Eren has no resentment/fear. Also, Eren as Levi looks really cute.

Don't mind me just expressing how much I love this novel

( spoiler alert, may contain some volume 10 content)

Just read all volumes of novel and...god dammit truly love the way author describe everything in the books. Which made me re-watch anime and re-read it so many times.The way they interact and communicate with different individuals are just all too precious. Honestly, set those yaoi or shipping aside, the way Tsujimura-sensei portray character's ideals, thoughts and mind are really, in my opinion, the best. All those religious, language,culture, and ,of course, jewlery knowledge are all just tooo wonderful!!! But back to Seigi and Richard ->>>

These two aren/t just lovely dovely couple, they are something beyond that ( probably think I'm crazy lol)

TBH in the part 2 of the novel, they know each other too well that people around them thought they are couple ( cuz from their interaction seems like that to others.......I ｍｅａｎ．．．．．Seigi kissed Richard’s hand and richard kisssed back too and typically (Seigi) confess to him in vol10...so like...... ╮（╯＿╰）╭ ). Plus both are willing to fly to another side of earth even for the smallest problem. And from a normal standard 2 unrelated person who are willing to go that far for one another can only be define as lovers, in fact others do think like that for Richard and Seigi's relationship. However, Seigi continuous to deny that thoughts but in the end came up with an answer and call it soul mate ( my memories are blunt over here but i think he called it soul mate). Not romantic kind but someone who will truly understand you and support you. Someone who will root you no matter what kind of road you choose. Someone who isn't your family or lovers but will always be with you. They are that kind of existent for each other. Their relationship isn't something we can say much about.

(I know it may looks like I’m talking non-sense or think I’m crazy but seriously the more you read the more details you discover and notice how deep it is. It’s like a child tasting lollipop, the more you taste the more you love it. I love this novel)

ps.So...... when are you two gonna get marry?? XD

pss. EVERYTIME!!!!! EVERYTIME!!!!! Everytime when Seigi praise about Richard’s beauty and the way he gets shy is just to f***ing cute. ( ex. quickly goes to another room punch punching bag (cuz he box) or quickly turn around cough a little with his ear slowly turn red, or punch a pillow....anyways just too cute)

On January 14, 2019, NHK will broadcast “The Style of Professional Work” featuring a voice actor, Kamiya Hiroshi, who gained an overwhelming popularity and displayed varying degrees of competence in the voice actor industry.

Behind the scene, of Kamiya Hiroshi who voiced Levi from Shingeki no Kyojin.

Also Kamiya Hiroshi who joined Kiramune Reading Live, Colors.
