The only (fatal) victim of the Dawson College Shooting; Anastasia De Sousa
Anastasia Rebecca “Stacy” De Sousa was a first-semester International Business student who’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 18 years old. Leaving behind two grieving parents, her younger sister and younger brother. She was shot in the abdomen and pronounced dead on scene.
"We never stopped laughing. I used to call her Malibu Stacy because she was like a Barbie doll," said Jennifer Mariasine, who went to junior high school with De Sousa.
Anastasia’s funeral was visited by nearly 700 people, all giving their condolences to the grieving family, some even staying out in the drizzling rain to pay their respects.
"One time we were speaking, and she said that at her funeral, she wanted everyone to smile and to wear pink. I don't know about the smiling, but I'm wearing pink."
The funeral brought closure to many, a moment to grieve about a young lost life that had much ahead of her. On her casket, wrapped in white and blue brought down the steps of the church with the Dawson College flag over it.
Nearly hundreds pay their respects to the young victim during a visitation at a funeral home in Laval. Strangers, Family and Friends alike paying their final respects.
“Together with her parents, Louise and Nelson De Sousa, Dawson College established a memorial award fund in her name so that every year, deserving Dawson students can pursue their dreams.”

Anastasia’s Bill
In Québec, a month after the Dawson College Shooting. A new provincial legislation was introduced to control weapons throughout the province.
"Quebec's Bill 9 will be called Anastasia's law in memory of 18-year-old Anastasia DeSousa, who was killed at Dawson College in Montreal last September in a shooting rampage."
"Wearing a pink ribbon in honour of DeSousa's memory, Charest unveiled details about the proposed bill Friday afternoon at Dawson College, at an event attended by Anastasia's parents, students who survived the shooting and Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant.'
The bill introduced will:
• Restrict ownership of semiautomatic weapons to gun club members.
• Limit the right of the owner to transport guns from one place to another.
• Require people to apply for gun permits in person at a police station and pass an aptitude test.
• Require gun club owners to report any suspicious or unusual behaviour detected among members.
• Require other professionals, such as physicians and teachers to report suspicious behaviour even if it contradicts doctor-patient or any other confidentiality.
• Create gun-free zones on public transit, and at day cares, schools and colleges.
Those who do not comply with the met ban would be fined up to $5,000 (CAD). As well as the weapons being confiscated even without a warrant.
"The bill is Quebec's response to the September 13 shootings at Dawson, where 20 people were shot and injured before gunman Kimveer Gill turned his weapon on himself. It was later discovered he was an active member of a Montréal gun club prior to the attack."
"The new law requires Québecers to do their part to alert authorities to any odd behaviour that could potentially lead to tragedies like the one at Dawson."
