Top reads of 2023
that i read this year, not published
1. Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller
2. House of Earth and Blood & House of Sky and Breath - Sarah J. Maas
3. Unfortunately Yours - Tessa Bailey
I’ve had a reading slump this year, ironically it’s also my best year of reading (as in, a lot). I came across lots of stories I wish I hadn’t; but it’s finding the needle in the haystack that makes it all worth it. A fair amount of books I’ve come across have been a thumbs down, sad face, waste of time situation :-( no one is more disappointed than me.
My first mistake was starting 2023 with Reborn Yesterday, didn’t mean to jinx my year. BUT, I’ve come across some of the most tantalising stories. My greatest reads of this year is actually making me question my past favourites. How did i wait so long to … ? honestly, it’s not important. I know now. I think I’m just down because a considerable amount of my favourites were completed in the first half of this year; and I’ve read 4 smut books in a row that I’m actually developing a migraine. I told myself that i might need a break from reading; but no, i need a break, maybe even retirement, from literary porno.
Song of Achilles and Crescent City made me so hopeful, but nothing really reached their standards for me. Unfortunately Yours, while it lacks in substance, was still my giddiest read of the year (because August and Menace, of course). Some notable mentions include lessons in chemistry, the inheritance games, and chestnut springs series 🤠 (yeehaw). Everything else has been good/mediocre, forgettable, or just plain wrong. Despite this, I’m still excited to read about all the wild adventures to come!

Brendan & Piper’s proposal
The bonus content in the target edition of secretly yours was posted on Twitter by an absolute angel 🥹
I got an email about this last week and cried. There’s a chapter 🥹 there’s an illustration 🥹 just look at it for yourself. Also stressed out because BEING IN AUSTRALIA means we don’t get this edition (we don’t get anything)

Top 3 books of 2022
that I read this year, not published
1. It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey
2. Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
3. … Icebreaker by Hannah Grace (don’t @ me)
SMUT? hmm, not sure what you’re on about. 🤔
Not to be dramatic or anything BUT brendan taggart changed my life for the better 😫 … and the worst because he doesn’t exist 😩 It was so difficult to move on from Westport! CAN’T believe i only read it to “get it over and done with”
Serpent & dove is a special love of mine. I mean, a WITCH and a witch HUNTER? I can’t imagine a more beautiful thing!!! Such a shame the rest of the series took a nosedive. But it is by far, the fluffiest love of my life!!
And I don’t know, Icebreaker was TOO MUCH but also Nate was so unrealistic you really wanted him, needed him, to be real. The parties! The drinking! Ughhhh not my thing! But the teasing! The resisting! 😍 i kept going back to this sweet little thing, rereading every special moment … i’m a lil obsessed, but it was UNNECESSARILY long — Evelyn Hugo was supposed to be #3, I’ll be honest BUT i didn’t read it 50 times like icebreaker (that’s why!! PLS don’t @ me) I’m a shallow girl with simple needs 🥴
This year of stories have been so special because each year everything else in life gets shittier 🫶
Hippity hoppin to the next full year of reads!!

Kingdom of the Feared
SPOILERS AHEAD, you’ve been warned
OK I’ve said this before. The plot of the whole kotw series has never really made sense to me. The curses and prophecies were just … 🤔😵💫 I’m sure if I read each more than once, I probably would’ve made some connections (hehe 🤭) but i just wasn’t that interested in it.
Now, everything is falling into place in kotf and I’m just wondering HOW this was centred around Emilia and Wrath in the first place??? Like Pride, Claudia, Vittoria … ??? WHAT??? THAT was the trilogy I needed. I know, I know, we’re looking at a possible spin-off (I’m certain we’re getting one). But the main story should’ve surrounded this “love triangle”. Like, Wrath is cursed for siding with Pride and his wife? And Emilia is a goddess with bad memory??? That was so anti-climactic 😭😂
My interest piqued during the last moments with Pride and Vittoria! I need more of that! Will Claudia choose to get her memories back? C’mon, I need to know! Honestly, this started because of Pride (maybe I’m missing something, idk) 🤨 but who cares if Wrath is the king of demons?? wrath and emilia should’ve been a side story, I’m sorry!! 🥱
spice level: 🌶🌶.5/ 5
Spiciness is very subjective, it really depends on what you read. But this book wasn’t that spicy to me. Yeah, it was definitely a far cry from the first book; but not as descriptive as others.

I’m doing it!! I’m moving on from apple books, I’m so excited!
I decided to go with Kobo because of its simplicity; kindle’s just filled with ads and recommendations, with a lil section for your books 🥱 also, kobo supports more formats (I especially needed epub)
BUT THE BIGGEST THING, is that kobo shows chapter progression (by pages) and kindle doesn’t 🫠 honestly, “time left” would be such a useless feature for me.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

“The book,” Nesta said, a bit breathlessly, “is about …” Her nostrils flared and her eyes went a bit unfocused. “A book.”
“Interesting,” Cassian murmured. “Sounds great.”
