“Hello, Arthor.” Addam took a good look at this man again, looking for any features he recognized. A nobleman, or not? Addam was terrible at knowing which lord owned which castle, and what features made someone a part of a certain family. For now, this man was simply Arthor.
Arthor looked calmer than he previously was, but he still seemed shaken up. What had happened to this man? Addam wanted to ask, and to try to fix things for Arthor, to see him smile instead of be on the verge of tears. But the last thing he wanted to do was to pressure him into speaking about his troubles.
Sometimes the only thing someone else wanted was simply the presence of another. So Addam would be that presence for his new friend.
“Don’t be sorry, Arthor. These things happen, trust that I’ve been where you are now as well.”
To every night he panicked that he wouldn’t be able to provide for his mother and brother, to the times when he’d believed he’d ruined a design for a ship and destined all the people on it to sink, Addam knew the feeling well of things going wrong and feeling the pressure of that. He saw a little bit of himself in this other man, a little bit of Alyn there, and a lot of kindness. It was an assumption of course to say Arthor was kind, he had barley spoken to this man yet, but Addam could feel it.
Addam smiled back at him. A true, comfortable smile. Not the awkward smile he wore at court with too much teeth and too little warmness. “I’m Addam. Addam of Hull. You’ve most likely heard of me before… not that I want people to be talking about me. Or I’m proud that many people know me. I’m…” He stopped himself from saying more stupid things.
“Yes, I have a dragon, Seasmoke. He was watching you, and very worried for you. He’s fond of humans, much more than I am.”
Suddenly, a chilling breeze stopped Addam from talking further. He looked up, realizing Seasmoke was gone, most likely flying to the dragon pit now to take shelter from this horrible cold. It was time Addam did as well.
“Arthor, I’d love to stay and chat with you. But by the looks of the sky, we’re in for a storm soon. Can I take you to where I stay? I’m not sure where you reside, but my chambers are in the castle. It’s warm in there and has lots of sweets…” Would this help the other man to feel better? Or was Addam just making him uncomfortable? He couldn’t tell. He had never been much of a people person, but he tried. He tried with everything in him.
“You could tell me about your terrible day, and I’ll tell you about my own life. If you’d like.”

Seasmoke was watching Addam, just as he always did. His wings moving fluidly through the air over the docks, scaring away most of the people who noticed him.
Addam was thankful, really, and the perks of having a huge beast as a companion were endless. Less people bothering him on the docks was something he’d never take for granted. So now he sat by himself in a more secluded place of the docks, minding his own business, trying his best to ignore the chill in his bones.
He’d make one more sketch. Add one last line to the drawing. Use up one final charred stick. Then he’d go back to his rooms and warm himself.
It was what Addam always told himself, though it was never true. But today, he didn’t think he could take the cold much longer.
With a shiver that caused his hand to fumble, leaving his drawing ruined, he decided it was time to leave. He sighed, looking up at Seasmoke. Do dragons feel the cold like this?
He watched Seasmoke drift through the clouds over to the more busy part of the docks, and to his surprise, Seasmoke stayed there. The blue and grey dragon seemed to watch over the ships at bay. Addam rolled his eyes, but knew his dragon wanted him over there for one reason or another.
If my dragon wants to watch me embarrass myself as others try to speak to me, so be it.
Once he arrived, the dock seemed to be too silent. Perhaps the ships aren’t leaving, and everyone has gone home? What did Seasmoke see that he did not?
But Addam then saw it. A man, a young man, one at the edge of the dock looking like he was ready to throw himself into the sea.
Addam was familiar with men in a state like this. Men who were afraid of the open water, men who became seasick as soon as they had set sail, boys who were too young to know how to sail. Clutching their chests, breathing heavy, just as this mysterious man was doing before Addam now.
He quickly looked around him, and realized no one was here for this man. But Addam would be now.
He quickly walked over to the other man, hoping his steps were loud enough that he noticed him and he wouldn’t be startled.
“Hello, friend, are you well?”
Stupid question. He wasn’t well, very clearly unwell. Addam tried again and this time, he settled his hand on the distressed man’s back.
“Hey, it’s okay, you’re okay…” He tried his hardest to sound kind and honest, but the other man did not seem to hear him. How could he comfort a stranger he did not know? How did he comfort anyone? That thought made him think of Alyn, his younger brother.
Years ago, Alyn had spent the night out gambling. He had thought it a hilarious game and a way to make their family rich. But, being only a foolish young boy, he’d lost all of the money. Money that he’d stolen from Addam, money that was supposed to pay for their food the next day.
Alyn had come to Addam, profusely apologizing, and crying. Something the younger seldom did. His brother was breathing so heavily, Addam thought he would faint right then and there.
But he forgave Alyn, as he always did, and brought him into his arms. He told his brother; “Look to the sea, Alyn. It’s calm this night. Be calm like the sea is. You have nothing to fear, because I’ll protect you.”
This stranger was still trembling, and Addam would stay until he was okay. With his free hand, he pointed to the sea. Where the sea was free of ships, and the cold wind was blowing the waves gently.
“Look, friend. Look at the sea.” Addam gently moved his hand up from the man’s back to his shoulder. “It moves gently. Calmly. And…” Seasmoke was in their sight now, flying over where Addam was pointing.
“You see? There’s my dragon, Seasmoke. He’s here to protect us, nothing can harm you when he’s here. Everything is well, I promise you.”

Watching & Learning

Ever since Addam had arrived to Kings Landing, he’d been following Princess Rhaenys like a duckling. A very confused duckling.
This castle was unfamiliar to him, the people were rude and all too in his face at all times, and Addam had seemingly hid in every corner he could find. So, at any time he could, he clung to anyone who was a familiar face. Rhaenys and Corlys were more than usually the familiar faces, as well as people he genuinely wanted to spend time with. His family.
While Lord Corlys still remained somewhat awkward and perhaps distant, Princess Rhaenys was all too excited to speak to Addam. And Addam was all too excited to listen to her as well.
He knew how it looked to outsiders. Strange. Strange that this shy bastard of Hull had trailed behind the Lord and Lady of Driftmark, and even stranger that his brother was never nearby. Alyn had no interest in the royal family, and even less interest in dragons, so he always (very rudely) declined.
But the rumors of the truth of Addam and Alyns parentage had only been enhanced by all of Addams time spent with Lord Corlys as his apprentice and Princess Rhaenys. “Was Laenor Velaryon truly these boys parents? Or perhaps…”
And it seemed Kings Landing was a the place for rumors to grow larger and uglier by the minute. But, they were eaiser to ignore when being in the presence of Rhaenys. She was easy to listen to, and she was as comforting as if she had known Addam for years already. He admired her.
The rumors barely mattered to Addam, anyway. He knew what he knew, the truth, and others opinions did not matter. It only bothered him once they approached him… but in the presence of the Princess and Lord Corlys, people did not.
So now, he followed the Princess through the library, not speaking much but letting her guide him. He’d asked her earlier to help him through this vast room of knowledge, as he had already gotten lost here twice.
Lord Corlys followed as well, nodding whenever Rhaenys spoke, but not adding much to what she said. Just as Addam did.
They now walked past books about old Valyria, tales of their ancestry and ones that Addam had never thought to look through before. It was hard to believe sometimes that he himself was now a part of all of this, of people who rode dragons and lived in a castle…
They were silent for a moment, so he decided to ask a question. “Princess Rhaenys? Will you show me a book that you believe highlights our… family history well?” The words were a little awkward, a little shy perhaps, but he knew Rhaenys would have something perfect for him.

Addam would kill Alyn.
Not truly, of course. It was more than likely that he’d forgive Alyn only a moment after seeing his sad, pleading face. But for now, in this terrible moment, he was more than angry with his annoying little brother.
His brother had brought him to some random room in the castle… Where even were they right now? Addam still had no clue of the layout of this castle. All Addam knew was that right now, in this very room Alyn dragged him to, people were gambling and playing games all around him.
Of course Alyn would drag him here.
Lords threw dice, servants handed out glasses of wine, and Addam stood still amidst the chaos of people switching games and trying to make conversation with him.
Alyn had told him he’d stay right next to him, but Addam knew the second they entered the door that the two of them would be separated.
Seven Hells, he couldn’t even see Alyn right now. He’d watched the younger man get dragged away by some random man, a man that looked wealthy, one that was Alyn would probably pickpocket when he was distracted. Whatever, Addam thought, I’m leaving.
Addam looked around, trying desperately to find the exist to this stupid room, feeling more and more nervous every time his eyes met with another. How many more awkward conversations could he take before he died right here and now? He had to leave.
He walked closer to a table full of men playing a game, a game Addam didn’t care to observe any further than noticing it had cards involved and money. Where is the exit? Addam was sweating now, feeling even worse and more trapped than before.
People were staring now, his least favorite thing. Staring. People stared at him now because he looked frightened, and because they knew who he was. He hated it.
Addam gripped the bottom of his loose shirt, feelings his hands starting to shake. Could this night get any worse? But that was when he saw someone.
He saw a familiar face at last. Benjen Mormont. His friend, someone who was nice to him and was always a pleasure to be around. Addam was so relieved he was here now, he wanted to cry. He moved quickly towards Benjen, who was standing now, seemingly exiting the game he was just playing.
“Benjen,” he didn’t care to think about formalities right now, and he didn’t think Benjen was one to care about them either. “thank the Gods. I- I need help getting out of this room. I’ve been called a bastard about twenty times already, and people keep handing me cards and dice and I can barely breathe-”
Then he suddenly saw someone else behind Benjen. Yet another familiar face. Someone he was shocked to see.
“What the hells… you?…” Who could forget such a face as Marwyn’s? And who could forget that hair… Addam certainly couldn’t.
That man, some years back, had been dressed in a Septa’s robes, and would not leave Addam alone. What was he even doing on Driftmark?
Addam hadn’t even been declared a bastard of the royal family at that time. Seasmoke hadn’t been a part of his life yet, either. Yet this nobleman Marwyn had invaded his space and studied his drawings like he was an old friend. Did that mean he was kind?
Addam had thought he was in a strange dream at the time, but now he knew it was real, because that same man was back. Right in front of him.
The air in the room was so thick, he could barely get in another gasp of air. He put his face in his hands, defeated. What was going on?
“Someone, please just help me leave. I believe I’ve just lost my sanity.”

A Walk Through the Unknown
Thread with @thesongbirdofwinterfell
(a part of @asongofgoldenfireandblackblood)
Tumblr media
Seasmoke had led him to her.
Not long ago, Seasmoke had heard her singing, and had brought Addam to her.
Addam swore she must have been a siren, or some sort of mermaid, a creature he’d only heard in tales that his shipmates would tell him on the open water.
She was beautiful, sweet, more brave and outgoing than Addam had ever been in his life. What had he done to deserve her company? He didn’t know, but he wouldn’t continue to question it. Life had brought him to her, and that had to mean something. It had to.
He’d held affections for her ever since the day they’d first met. He’d been fond of others before, surely. Addam had spent time with many others at sea, confined in a ship with little to do other than to flirt and enjoy another’s company…
But Alarra was different. No one before had made him feel so… comfortable? He didn’t know how to describe what was going on inside of him whenever she smiled sweetly, and sang so lovely, but he couldn’t get enough of it.
It had been a little while since they’d met, and now, they were stuck in the castle of Kings Landing. Was this another sign? Addam would take it. He wasn’t very familiar with this castle, having spent his whole life on Driftmark and never leaving.
He had gotten lost a handful of times, very embarrassingly, until someone familiar had come to save him and bring him back to his rooms. He could surely benefit from some exploring of the castle… and who better to begin with him than Alarra?
The walk to her chambers was long and lonely. People stared, tried to start conversation with him, and stared some more as he fumbled his way out of it.
Many of the highborns he’d met had no idea how to treat Addam. His position was still quite new, and not many knew whether to call him “Velaryon” or simply “bastard.”
It was more annoying to Addam than offensive, truly. He wished eyes would be off of him, and he wished for peace. He knew he’d find some peace with Lady Alarra, so his feet brought him to her chambers faster than ever.
His mind raced a little bit, trying to remind himself of how to address her.
It’s “my lady,” not “m’lady.” Or maybe she would prefer to be called Alarra?
His new position at court came with a million new rules he had to memorize, some seemed more ridiculous than others. But he was horrible at titles.
She’s the songbird of Winterfell, perhaps that’s what she liked to be called.
Once he arrived at her door, he took a quick look around at his surroundings. No one was watching, thankfully.
Addam knew why others watched his interactions with Alarra carefully. She was a highborn lady, a lady worthy of a man who matched her status and could give her a beautiful keep of her own one day. Courtiers didn’t think Addam was that man.
But Addam would leave that up to Alarra to decide.
He knocked on her door twice, hearing her shift around in her room before finally opening the door.
She was beautiful, just as he’d remembered her. Radiant, bursting with energy and enthusiasm. His heart skipped a beat.
He couldn’t help but smile at her. “…Alarra. It’s good to see you.”
You forgot to call her “my lady,” you oaf.
He cringed at his own self, but her face showed no signs of offense.
“I’ve been meaning to explore this castle some more. I keep getting lost, and with this freeze keeping us all inside, we have some extra time to kill. Would you like to join me? I can think of no other person who I’d like to be with more.” He held out his hand, hoping and praying that she’d take it.

Apprentice and speculated bastard of Lord Corlys Velaryon, Clinton Liberty, he/him - @addamsseasmoke
Welcome, Ser Addam of Hull! We’re delighted to see he has arrived safely on his journey to King’s Landing. Around the court the nineteen year old has been praised as loving, selfless, diligent, but some have whispered he is also bashful, spineless, antisocial. Upon his arrival, it is clear that he is undoubtedly in support of the reign of Westeros' first Ruling-Queen and while the eyes of our court may be fixed on House Targaryen, Queen Rhaenyra, and the future of Westeros, his true allegiance will always be to his mother and brother.
