sunnysidcup:
Sunny smiled and nodded as he spoke, but then when he prompted her with a question, she must have looked like a deer in headlights, because her mind went completely blank. She had always been bad at this on-the-spot thing, but once she snapped out of it she began to gather her thoughts. “Uh… shit.” She said under her breath. “Honestly? I went to school for this. I know what I’m doing, I’m determined, and I’m going to put my whole heart into everything I do, because this is my passion.” So maybe she was cheating by using compound sentences, but whatever. It’s a technicality. She just hoped that her honesty was enough because not only would the job pay for her expenses, but it would also pay because it was experience, something she needed more than anything fresh out of college.
The man was quiet now, intently listening with a focused expression on his face. This two sentence shit was just something he’d read once in a business book, something about putting people on the spot made them more honest. Not giving them a chance to really think it through made it less likely that they would only tell you what they thought you wanted to hear. And so, Matt began to use it in his interviewing process. It was less a process and more a 30 minute back-and-forth which allowed him to read the person enough to see if they would fit in or not. After she stopped talking, he leaned forward and smiled, wide. “That’s exactly what I was hoping to hear. Look, don’t say anything but you’re the most interesting person I’ve interviewed today and you only walked in about 2 minutes ago. I can’t offer you the job officially, but...if you want it. It’s yours. We would really do well to have someone like you around here.” His smile grew, only slightly.

nightvalecoroner:
She plucked the wrapper from his hand and stared at the number a moment. Then looked back up at him, grinning shyly. She still hadn’t taken off those sunglasses, but it was bright out today, nothing strange there, right?
“Yeah, yeah, definitely. I’ll make sure to keep you up to date.” She gave him a quick little hug, and then scurried off. “See you tomorrow!” She was still grinning.
The text came later the next morning. She told him to just meet her where they had last talked, and they could walk the little ways from there.
The way she worded it and the emoji’s she used, it was clear she was trying to hide her excitement. It was best she didn’t scare him off before they even had a date. Afterward, she couldn’t control. That was up to him, and the kind of person he was.
The taller man just stood there for a while, awkwardly shoving his hands in his jeans pockets as he smiled goofily down at her. It was strange, meeting a total stranger and making dinner plans within the same 30 minutes. But it was exciting, something he didn’t get a lot of these days. Being a dad and business owner sort of made things predictable.
“Keep me up to date on our date.” He chuckled at his lame joke, typical dad move. As she hugged him, he raised his eyebrows in surprise and awkwardly patted her back. “See you tomorrow!” After she left, he was kicking himself. “Up to date on our date! Wow, really fuckin’ smooth Matt. Jesus Christ.” Shaking his head, he made his way back to his apartment.
The next morning, he’d already been awake for a few hours when he received a text. With his daughter, Summer, in one arm he grabbed his phone. The wording and emojis made him chuckles, and he quickly shot a reply back.
The sitter was already there and reading to Summer when he hurried out the door. “Don’t forget, bed no later than 10! Oh! And she loves listening to Radiohead before bed. Or The Antlers. Don’t forget!” He called right before shutting the door. “fuck.” He exhaled through his nose, then smoothed his sweater and headed back to their designated meeting place.

( @actualmanchild)
Riley had finally found an opportunity for her art when one of her clients told her about a comic book company that was looking for new artists. She put together a portfolio of her work and went to the interview she had set up over the phone.
When she got to the office, she noticed that there were a lot of people applying, and her nerves started to increase. When it came time for her to go into the conference room, she held her portfolio in her arms and took a deep breath. The applicants before her gave no facial cues as to whether or not the interview went well or not. She was pretty much left to let her imagination wander about the interview.
She walked into the room and saw a youngish looking brunette man sitting at the table. She smiled at him and held her hand out. “I’m Riley Walker. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” she said.
The business was expanding faster than Matt could fill in the staff. Part of him expected as much, as he’d made many connections during his time at Dark Horse and freelancing for other smaller publishers. Lots of writers and artists joined his new company, which increased the need for paid interns and other general staff.
Of course, no matter how big the company had gotten Matt still wanted to interview everyone himself. He could read people rather well, and genuinely wanted a good vibe around the place. That day was fairly busy, mostly young kids fresh out of college looking for a place to spread their wings. And other, hipster types, that really had no idea what the business end of comics really entailed. It was rather exhausting. He’d been at it since 8 AM, and as he checked his watch he realized it was now going on 5 PM.
He was dressed casually, jeans and a loose-fitting sweater with his usual work boots. The door opened, and a young woman walked in. The man smiled warmly, already getting a good read from her as he stood to shake her hand. “Nice to meet you, Riley. I’m Matthew Altman, which you might have seen on the front of the building.” He laughed, running a hand through his hair as he sat back down and propped his feet on the table. “So. Give me your little ‘I’m so excited to work here!’ spiel.”

It was endearing, the way she was so nervous to ask him out. Frankly, Matt wasn’t new to this sort of thing. Being a single dad meant a lot of things, but the main one was that he was getting laid on the regular. Something about dudes with babies just drew them in. But he knew this wasn’t exactly like that. A break from one night stands and casual encounters would be quite nice, he thought.
Smiling, and with a small chuckle, he nodded. “Yeah. 7 should work. Should we...meet there or, I can pick you up...or.” He raised an eyebrow, now quite flustered himself. He was rustier than he thought. “Actually, just uh...text me...” He paused for a moment, grabbing a pen from his pocket and a gum wrapper. “all the details.” He wrote down his number then handed it to her. “I look forward to it.”

fluffy prompts || accepting
Matt stood on the sidewalk, contemplating the offer. It was less a question and more of a statement, which was quite...bold and forward. But it was nice. After some quiet consideration, the man finally spoke up. “Sure. But I have to be back before 9. Bed time.” He chuckled softly.

“I dunno, maybe.” Matt shrugged, shirtless as usual. “i like it a solid 60 degrees at all times. Helps me think, focus. Adapt. Thrive.” He chuckled then looked back down at the drawing he was working on. “There’s a blanket on the couch, if you need it.”

Matt chuckled and shook his head, glancing over at Khleo as he made dinner. “Look but don’t touch. Touching is extra.” He snorted before setting the top on the pot he was cooking in. “Keep an eye on this, Summer is due for a diaper change.” As if on cue, the small child stirred awake and began to cry.
