I Headcanon That...

Exos are modular in the sense of that the external plates are removable. Some plates attached directly to the endo-frame others to a later of rubber muscle. Joints and more important areas are rubberized while forearm and shins are able to be sealed with proper plate maintenance and repair.

The butt, crotch, chest, abs, back, shoulders, thigh and bicep are giving a rubber casing over the endo-frame (yes these are in theory removable for maintenance and wash.

Exos like to swap and alter their outer plates because it offers an easy sense of personality and self expression.

The rubber bits and exposed endo-frame are often made to be more sensitive. Especially considering they're meant to be touched through metal plates and not directly. The breast, butt, and crotch region of an exo have "decency" plates that cover those regions to keep them modest. This allows exos to walk around in little to nothing but not be considered obscene. Removing the plates exposes sensitive zones that can activate pleasure sensors. Using a mix of silicone implants, rubber and some strange memory ooblec these parts of the exo strongly resemble human counterparts.

Various natural oils and lubes are used in exo maintenance meaning their "blood" is human safe, as well as anything expressed from the exo via... activities. Some later models even had modes that mimics humans greatly and can lactate, sweat, and have induced cycles.
