Now, he could see their reflections in the mirror. He could see Granger’s face was flushed a lovely shade of pink. She looked beautiful.

He watched her eyes flutter shut.

“No,” Draco said, resuming his hand’s movement over her knickers. “I want you to watch.”

Her eyes snapped open, finding his already on hers.

Her grip on his neck tightened as he continued pumping his fingers in and out. He alternated the pressure of his signet ring against her.

“I’m going – I think I may –” she stuttered, shutting her eyes.

“Hermione,” Draco said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Eyes on me when you come.”

Theo continued rambling, fairly drunk.

“What we need is something different. Something to help the Order. Someone like—”

A crack sounded, and Granger appeared.

“Like a bloody Hermione Granger apparating into your parlor room,” Theo said, blinking as if he were dreaming the entire thing.  

Draco moved toward her.

“Granger? Christ - are you hurt?”

“No, I always bleed from my head.”

“Point taken,” he said, moving closer to inspect her injuries.

“I didn’t know where else to go,” she said.

Then, she collapsed into Draco's arms. Theo sprung up from his armchair.

“She fainted,” Draco said, looking at him dumbly.

“Well this certainly makes things more interesting." Theo took another swig from the bottle. "Cheers, mate."

“Pardon me if I don’t put much stock into the opinion of someone who’s been writhing around on the ground —”

“I was not writhing! I simply laid —”

“For the better part of an hour —”

“It has only been five minutes.”

“After you collapsed to the forest floor in a mad sort of way —”

“I did not collapse! You watched me calmly sit on the ground!”

“Thought you were having a bit of a fit honestly —”

Granger jumped up to her feet apparently having had enough.

“Protego,” Draco called lazily.

She scoffed before saying,“I hadn’t even made a move toward you.”

“An ounce of prevention and all that.”

“Has anyone ever called you dramatic? I’m truly curious.”

“I more so tend to hear handsome, clever, or witty.”

“Allow me the honor. Malfoy. You are undeniably dramatic.”

“Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit you know.”

“It’s not sarcasm if it’s true! Gods, you’re bloody infuriating.”

“Pot meet kettle.”

Granger threw her hands up in exasperation and looked skyward as if searching for the will to continue conversing with him. Admittedly, Draco’s Protego had been a touch theatrical.

It begins on the precipice of a prophecy fulfilled.

Hermione stands before Draco. She’s home - with him - for a few moments more. Their eyes lock, sharing silent apologies and regretful proclamations. Draco’s eyes calm her, and she indulges in the brief reprieve. After all, something in him calls to her. She knows this much is true. Hermione and Draco are fated to this end. Their love story is merely a series of malignant twists of fate.

Hermione rolls her shoulders back and stops prolonging the inevitable. She bends her knees, carefully positioning herself. Dueling is a violent dance, but one with graceful steps. Draco mimics her stance and blinks once slowly as if to say on with it then.

On with it then. Hermione brings up her wand, aiming for his chest. Draco positions his wand higher, aiming for her head. Their stances remain transfixed as they slowly bow their heads in tandem. It has begun.
