ESSAY (100 WORDS)
Angelica May De Torres
"Trends and Fads: To Try or To Ditch"
Trends and fads are actually one of the biggest influences when it comes to my preferences and way of living. In this day and age, I find that it helps me learn how to sift through the good and the bad in popular ideas or concepts. Despite the popularity of such, I find it important to observe, assess, and perhaps, try certain trends and fads that suit my tastes.
Usually, I am interested in observing the trends that unravel as the years go by, but it doesn't exactly mean that I get influenced by all of them. Depending on as to what the trend is, I tend to observe other people before actually trying it out myself. For instance, back in 2015, people were engrossed with the Kylie Jenner Lip challenge; personally, I wasn't into that beauty fad because I didn't want my lips to look plumper than they already are. It turns out that the challenge could cause minor to major injuries to the affected area which is one example as to why I am cautious with the fads that I attempt. On the other hand, when it comes to fashion trends, I easily get hooked because it is something that inspires and drives my passion for beauty. Although it also depends if the apparel is something I can work with, such as rompers, pins, and belts, there are several pieces I wouldn't consider wearing due to my preferences.
Given that trends and fads come and go quickly in this age, it is almost impossible not to get influenced by even one of them. With the ability and freedom to choose, with regards to my preferences, I find that it is my responsibility to assess popular ideas and the story behind them before actually trying them myself. As it is one factor that may affect our way of living, it is essential to learn when to try or to ditch something.

“There’s Nothing Wrong”
I a world full of modernization, it is undeniable that this has been change our life in all aspects. The way we dress, the food we eat, our beliefs and even one’s culture, the way we approach to other people, the way we perceive life, the way we look to others, the way we talk to them, the way it easily changed our life in just one snap of the things.
The things that I am talking about are the trends that are being manifested back then and nowadays. Personally, I easily get hooked to any emerging trend here in our country and even with the other country since they are the trend setter which Filipinos usually like to get into their self particularly from USA and Korea. I think I easily get hooked because I always want something new, refreshing and unique and I always want to experience all for me to feel that I belong into something that many people also have it. For instance, the high waisted pants and shorts, white shoes, basic out fits, make ups which basically the clothes. I got addicted to high waisted pants and shorts and I always asked my mom to buy me new pants and shorts since whenever I wear them, I feel that it brings up my self-confidence and the white shoes wherein I get that trend from Koreans since I am watching Kdrama and I realized that white shoes fit to any kinds of clothes and then other people also wear those shoes. There are times that I asked my mom and dad to buy me some clothes and I was shocked that time because they both the basic colors I want which are black and white and they said that “uso daw yan, kaya yan binili namin” and I think I influenced them because now they usually buy clothes that are minimalist design which is a trend today. Trends doesn’t only affect me but also the people I am always with. I think I can make sense to any trend or fad in order to accept it or reject it in a way that just get or accept the new things that are justifiable, can offer good to you and to others, and that can change you in a better person.
Don’t just follow or do the things that are being showcased by our society nowadays, we have to filter those things because not all trends or fads can make something to you that you really want to be. There’s nothing wrong to follow trends but make sure you can handle yourself with all the changes into your life. Hey little kid, believe it or not there’s nothing wrong to remain a classic.
 Vanessa Antonette H. Mercado
“Hard To Fit in or Hard To Stand Out”
There’s so many emerging trends nowadays. Looking at the world, we can usually recognize the division between fads and trends. Some trends influenced a lot of people. Trends focus on social and environmental impacts. Trends are very well known because of the generation today specially for millennials like us. Some people thinks that in a way when we keep more efforts and give emphasize on trends our economic will grow and increase. At the present time, trends are about techy, social media, challenges, etc. and fads are the ones who are just a short span of time that makes the people happy in just an instant.
I get hooked to an any emerging trend by having an innovation to that new trend, knowing if there is something new, if it is interesting to do, if it will affect my life in a good way, and can reach my goals in a better way; also if the society discuss it and talks about it and I don’t have any knowledge about it so I badly need to know that new trend for me to relate, for me to be updated by what is happening in the community and know something that is latest, giving me an insight to lessen my curiosity about something that is about the trend, and for me not to be called living inside the rock that’s why I got hooked fast when there is an emerging trend. Knowing to accept or reject a trend or fads has a sense by knowing the difference between the two. You can accept fads if you are enjoying it at the moment, embrace as the lifestyle. Fads are about attention; it will be just rejected when its impact is not good. Fads often go with adolescence — to do something different, to be bored with the same old thing, especially when the culture and economy join forces to help convince you that new is better, and old is, well, old. They are also about attention– people who start or lead fads are all about capturing attention. We should play with fads because they can be fun and help us to enjoy life. Furthermore, trends are about movement, it is about an intention. It usually affects the life of a person. If the fads are more likely to adolescence, the trends are more adult-like because they take longer-term attention span to notice.
Trends are being made if it will click to the society. Change is the new permanent; our society are always changing. But it is not really good when a person follows trends too much. Trends tend to make everybody look the same. Following a trend is useful, until you start alienating the original. The last thing we want is to live in a world where everything is the same. Originality and individuality is key. And fads let them go, let it just passed through our society.

“The Bandwagon of this Generation.”
Today’s generation are often referred to as millennials, encompasses those who are between 20 – 35. Both groups are known for their love of all things tech, documenting their lives through social media to connect with large friends or networks. Known for being innovative and wanting to be their own bosses, Today’s marketers and companies find strategies for millennials to get hooked or be emerged to a specific trend. From the biggest influencers down to normal citizens, trends can reach each and every one. From my own personal opinion, I easily get hooked up or emerge to a trend. Joining the said “bandwagon” I too, can swiftly become uninterested then switch to the latest trend. I make sense of any trend or fad in order to accept nor reject it by simply trying to observe others. Like the weather, Trends and fads come and go quickly but it doesn’t require you to join the “bandwagon” for popularity and acceptance.
 Reyes, Ma. Katherine Grace B.
“Into the Norm”
It is time to explore the depths of the known, from sunflower craziness to KPOP madness. It’s no question that Filipinos enjoy this kind of in with the famed. Even though back then people who enjoyed k-drama, were considered as weird, but now everybody’s doing it. Strange huh? This is why I don’t enjoy fads or trends. I usually dislike them a lot.
I have nothing against trends or fads, it’s just that I feel bothered every time something I like becomes a trend that was previously ridiculed and is now loved and adored by all, comes off as an insult for me. Or maybe because I just want to enjoy what I enjoy without other only taking an interest in it when it becomes the uproar for attention. I rarely get hooked on emerging trends unless I really enjoy it; like sunflowers. Usually when a trend emerges I instantly don’t enjoy what I used to enjoy. For example, watching k-drama hasn’t been a task for me now, as it was before because it’s become a trend. Also, my brain is hard-wired to not be one with the flock. I find pleasure in being different than others because I enjoy my own pace of things. I have no intention of changing what I want just because society is doing it too. I’m fond of my bubble of weirdness, and I intend to stay in it.

“My Sense in Phrases”
There are many trends that takes place in our society, they come out specially in social media, one trend that I have been hooked is the word "Edi Wow" that came from an emcee in Fliptop Sinio, in which I used for a long time and by that I can say that I get easily hooked fast to what is viral. However, it depends to what is coming out, sometimes the trend is whack for me like the "Hugot Lines" since I am not a dramatic person I do not like it. Also, the challenges proposed in social media for me is stiff so I pay rarely attention to it. But most of the time I do get hooked especially in catchy phrases like "Wow Magic, Lodi etc" that is currently popular.

“Fads and trends: To Conform or Not?”
We live in a world wherein the pace keeps getting faster, and as time passed by, we are constantly being bombarded by more information that are hard to digest. When I read news about a current trend or watched a video that pertains about it, I often ask myself, "How does this apply to me? How can this fad/trend help with the things that are going on in my life?” In my humble opinion, the term ‘trend’ has various aspects, however the underlying concept of it is the same, it still an act or behaviour undertaken by a large proportion of individuals in a society. The trends may be classified as a social trend, technological trends, or political trends among other types. Each type of trend has different effects on people. And I – I prefer to differ by not conforming with what have become a “social standard”.
The social popularity pendulum swings back and forth. What's cool this season might not be cool next season and likely wasn't cool last season.  I wear what I wear, read what I read, listen to what I listen to, eat what I eat.  All of this stems from trying new things and finding what I enjoy.  I'm not saying that I ignore new, popular stuff, but after trying it, if I find I don't like it, I go back to what I enjoyed already. People's opinions and tastes change over time, and one can't help but be slightly influenced by the surrounding culture and society.  To deny that is plainly being blind to the impact the world has on us as individuals but to jump on every bandwagon as it passes is to deny our individuality and ability to form our own opinion. In addition, I just really don’t have the toleration to mimic the actions or styles of others if the primary motivation is to gain approval or acceptance. You will never gain respect by following the herd. It is important to think critically about the trend you are considering following, and ask yourself why.
 Ramos, Karla Michelle A.
“Be a part of it and make a difference”
The use of social media continues to evolve every day. Because of modern technology numerous people are enjoying it since it has a great advantage to us, especially for easy communication with our loved ones. The technology is so woven into our daily lives, oftentimes users have no choice but to spend hours online each day.  Also, we should be aware that limiting the time of internet usage is important because it affects our health. Like me, I am happier using social media because it helps me very much. Nowadays, there are lots of people who are using their different skills or thinking about how they will get the attention of people by making a video or a post or a fashion also which will be popular to people. It is so hard to catch their attention if you don’t have the ability to show what’s truly in your heart and mind. Although a few of us can make a unique style of thinking which can be a trend or a fad someday because of how we think critically. Besides, that capability can achieve what we wanted and by letting our sense of thinking to do that towards the likeness of the people. But how we will do that in a unique way that everyone will love what we’re going to do.
A trend is a longer lifespan, which you can make a different thing and a lot of people will catch their attention and can influence the way of living or doing the same thing particularly enjoying that moment. In that sense, they are very nice things because they are very human things. Out of the emerging trend you can freely choose to put a different idea on a certain thing, but still it would not affect the image of the person. Aiming to get the attention and influence the people to make them realize that some of them can make a difference and something that will surely make us happy in a way we can appreciate their contribution to the social media. Mainly the way how they deliver that thing, like the ice bucket challenge that was a trending before which lasted for several years due to its unique concept. The way they show how this challenge made a difference to people who are able to contribute a support for those who are experiencing the ALS disease. On the other hand, I am not like the other people who are fast to get hooked to an emerging trend but depends on how they make a dare and how they will influence in this world of uncertainty. Though I am always updated with the happenings today, I am not that kind of fan in every trending event who are challenging themselves just to show their support on the trending something that influences us. I like what they are doing, but we have a different perspective when it comes to the things like that. Once I know about a trend, more than likely I need to form an opinion about whether it is useful. I should be more observable and more careful in everything that are not sure of the effects of it. For me, to make sense in any trend or fad in order to accept or reject it, is how I am going to adapt something that could help me in a way to discover a thing that will lead to an interesting matter. Fad is capturing more on attention while trends are about intention, these two has the same thing to describe, but they also have comparison, this is how things will end, only to find out is the way how we accept or reject this style in efforts to multiply the outcome. To interfere also and be a part of it by giving my opinion or perspective in a certain thing, it could be considered as a contribution of mine. Through that, it encourages us to appreciate their fashion in a different way. And I will respect them, and I cannot stop what they want to express because they have their own life and if that will make them happy, why not?
Everything has a purpose why there are things can people do this, whether it's good or bad, what matters is that, at least you can show what you want to share with others, whether it's important or not, to express the capability of one person is not wrong unless there is no one can tread a human dignity and it is how we give them a feedback. Let others have a chance to freely express their thoughts and create something that can contribute in our society in good matters. This is the time where we have the chance to be a part of a new generation and accept the fact that we live for a reason and to feel that we are part of it. Let us make a difference that has something will contribute to society, not for just fun, but it is a kind of help that a society needs a change for the betterment of it and for us.

“Bend to Trend or Straighten the Trend?”
Living in a modernized era where science and technology plays a significant role in everyday living, various pictures, videos and other visual illustrations became part of one’s life in social media. These graphics are emerging in every aspect of the Internet world. Thus, likes, comments and shares cannot be taken away as reactions to these widespread visuals. As thousands of people saw and watched these stuffs, sharing became a practice of every individual when they are satisfied with the context and substance of these things. This is where trends came in to the surface. Due to thousands and even millions of reactions specifically shares, a certain content extends in a general range and direction where it becomes popular or fashionable.
Trends are very common nowadays. These can be in a form of a simple pose and style to an extreme challenge. Every netizen witnesses a specific matter gaining popularity on the Internet and as a millennial, I am also familiar with this matter. Honestly, I witnessed every trending subject that surfaces on the online world as I surf on the Internet every day. Trends can be a destructive or a constructive one. It depends on how an individual deals and uses his knowledge in using social media and its special features effectively. Some trends are sex scandals and dangerous selfies which are part of the negative trends in the online world. On the other hand, Ice Bucket Challenge that helped the identification of a gene implicated for the ALS disease is one of the top beneficial social media trends.
With this, I frequently go along with online trends. I only get hooked by a trend if it has an emotional appeal or a productive cause. I do not easily follow just because almost all netizens do the craze or dare. Moreover, I stick on to something constructive and helpful not only for me but also, to other people. Before I try to do a trending stuff, I first do a background check of this. Also, I do not quickly jump on trying just because it is cute or funny. This is the reason why I always take time before getting hooked by an emerging trend. Usually, it takes a few months for me to be captivated by an evolving trend.
Generally, there are many things paving the way for fame and acceptance in this modern world. Therefore, it is necessary for all netizens to realize that not all things are the same as it seems. It means that it may look funny when we watch it but in reality, it is really not. For example, the funny videos of people slipping in the pool, yard or even on the road is really funny to watch but those who are in the video suffered pain and discomfort to these situations. Hence, netizens have to really keep an eye on the things we share because a single reaction can outspread in the whole world. One click and all people in the world can see it. We do not have to flex and bend our interests and time for senseless stuffs but we have to straighten and level our attention to more productivities. Consequently, we have to pick what is right to accept and share because there are more important things worth making time for than sharing nonsense visuals that can hurt other people even unintentionally. So are you going to bend just to be on trend or are you going to straighten the trend?

“Fad and Trend”
Nowadays, the development of social media produced by technology where trending stuffs are seen are in fast-phase. Though there are many information that are spread to the world, most of them are popular at start and dies at the end. Thus they may be called as fad or trend. Activities that lasts for a short time are called fad and when it lasts and evolves to become a new interest it is called as trend.  For a teenager like me, one activity is accepted if it lasts and does not cause boredom and develops to become even better.
 Jessica Marie O. Mora
“What’s in… what’s out?”
Change is the only permanent thing in this world. It can’t be stop, it’s inevitable. Sometimes you’re up… sometimes you’re down. You’re in… you’re out. It’s up to you what to accept… what to reject.
As teenager who is living in the fast-changing world, the latest trending topics are some sort of big deal. It can be on fashion, music, gadgets and a lot of more. Soon enough, these can become trends… or fads, which ideally influences the social behavior and can be basis on the judgement of what social class we belong.
As for me, I wouldn’t deny that, some of the trends and fads, I didn’t ever try once or try imitated it. Because sometimes, in order to fit in, you need to know what’s in… and what’s out. Some of the trends and fads are really hook me by the way it was wittily presented, or maybe by the context it has. On the other hand, there are some for me that I think it boring or corny to try for. While some are just worth watching for because of the entertainment factor that it gives to a person like me. Nevertheless, I am the type of person who doesn’t easily be swayed by these trends or fads. It only affects me if caught my attention or I got interested to that thing. But I’m merely into fashion styles and movies.
Nonetheless, even though I’m very influenced by this modernization, cultural preservation for me is still important because of it mirrors our identity as Filipinos that many heroes fight and die for our freedom from greedy colonizers. Which is why, despite of the fast modernization happening ever minutes in the world, choosing what to accept or to reject I take consideration of some norms and values of a filipina or rather modern filipina. For I believe, our culture has its uniqueness that we must be proud of because it has something that other nation don’t and this shall be preserve forever.

Angelica May De Torres
There are plenty of commercials that have struck me, but one that I would like to share is that of a feminine hygiene company. Despite not showing the actual product on screen, the team was able to present what they can provide along with an inspirational message. The "Always #LikeAGirl" commercial is an inspirational advertisement that may appeal, inspire, and encourage women to avail their products.
Always, a company which provides feminine hygiene products, portrayed their product through a one-on-one interview with several girls and a boy. The main question that revolved in the video was, "How does a girl...?" in which half of them responded by acting frail. On the other hand, several of then showed strong movements as opposed to the others. Given this information, it is evident that the cause of the promotion is to appeal to women who struggle with the expectations of society. To influence people for longterm effects in terms of way of living and thinking, as a trend, the commercial tries to tell the audience that being, "like a girl," does not have to connect with negative connotations. Moreover, aside from advocating a message, they effectively presented their product by showing women that they are capable of doing physical activities without the worry of period leakage and the like.
Without showing a product, Always, presents their company and what they can offer through an effective advert. In hopes of starting a trend, they have much to offer to change the society's views on women. Along with their message, that may motivate and appeal to their audience, they may also appease the need for feminine care products.

As a student that having a lot of things to do, I usually don’t have enough time to watch TV every day. I only got chance to watch TV on weekends at night since it is my free time with my family and then I accidentally watch the advertisement of Jollibee which really caught my attention since it’s about the sequel of the first part of the video released by the Jollibee where in it is all about love at first sight in Jollibee and I taught that they will be together but then the guy ended up as the best man in the weeding of the he loved. And then Jollibee released more videos about the love of the son to his mother, best friends met in Jollibee and love to someone which are based on a true story which caught my attention. I think the basic reason of the promotion is to showcase the real meaning of their tag line “Sa Jollibee, Bida ang Saya” wherein when you go to the aforementioned fast food chain you be happy when you eat there and they use true stories of other people as a weapon to strengthen their product. The target is to show how Jollibee could change someone life. For instance, they met in Jollibee, eat there and know someone that could change their life in a certain way.  I think, the target of the advertisement are all Filipinos, one genre but different aspects of love, love to someone, to family, friends and other people. It conveys its message in a way that the videos catch the emotional facets of the clients and inspired by the videos that could reason for them to go to Jollibee and eat there hoping that they could also experience the same way and the same feeling when they go to Jollibee. I think the promoted product is a trend since Jollibee is existing long time ago and still in the market today and lot of people and still exist in the future with the help of the creative advertisement they are releasing.

From all the advertisement I’ve encountered Xbox advert life is short, even though the advertisement has been banned. It begins in a delivery room, where a screaming mom is delivering a screaming baby. The baby literally rockets out of her body and through a window, still screaming. The baby is shown hurtling through the stratosphere at a terrific speed. As it zooms across the skies, it slowly transforms into a little boy. Soon he begins screaming again, eyes wide with fear, as he arcs across the skies. He continues to age—into a young man, an adult. (He's still naked, so his hands find their way to a television-friendly position.) He screams and screams. He loses his hair; wrinkles develop, and his teeth yellow. He's old. His scream fades to a croaking groan. Finally, he slams into a grave in a leaf-strewn cemetery. The image dissolves to black and the following words appear in sequence: "Life Is Short." "Play More." "Xbox.". It caught my attention because it has a lesson not just about playing Xbox but people should appreciate life, live happily because we only live once and cherish every moment they have in their life because we don’t know when we will die, and another reason why it caught my attention is because at first when you watch it you can’t recognize what does the ad is promoting so the viewers really need to watch until the to know what was it all about. The underlying cause of the promotion is to play Xbox before you die and the ad convey about to be positive statement about life. It targets the people that is still alive to use and play Xbox before the day comes that you can’t play it anymore. Target clients has positive and negative comments about it, some says it is that the context it considered that the final scene of a body smashing into its grave was unnecessary and had caused considerable distress to many viewers, and some says it’s cool for having a baby boy that his entire life raging 9 months to 65 years old has been shown while screaming and it has a life lesson when a viewer see it in a positive way and has a deeper meaning. The promoted product is just a fad because it didn’t affect the life of the viewers and it just talked about by the people in just a short period of time.

From all the advertisement that I’ve encountered, the TV commercial aired at Japan was the one that caught my attention the most. Looking at the root of it, it promotes a product which is a Chocolate and of course, it targets the people who adore sweets. To convey its message to target clients, the commercial ad shows a woman who was trying to beat a world record by not blinking and the only thing that made her do such thing was just a bite from the advertised product. The main message of the ad was trying to tell how “good” the product tastes. I could say that the promoted product Is a fad.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Reyes, Ma. Katherine Grace B.
From all of the advertisements that I’ve encountered, I can truthfully only remember one. It’s Liza Soberano’s advertisement representing Domino’s pizza, and the reason why I remember it more than any of the advertisements that I’ve encountered is that I always happen to pass by it whenever I go back to my place or whenever I do go out. I mean how can I miss it? It’s as big as a gate!
I know, there’s nothing really that significant about the ad, but I happen to like pizza. A lot. It’s kind of difficult to ignore since it’s talking about a promo for pizza. Targeting all of the financially and not so financially stable people; in short, everyone. I have no idea if it could be considered a trend or a fad, but I guess it isn’t? Dominos isn’t exactly a thing to be a trend or fad yet I suppose; since all people ever think about these days are getting thin and healthy, because it’s you know, a trend. Anyway, I only ever think about food and books, so I don’t really know any advertisements that has a product with the potential to be a trend.
 Diether Malabanan
The best advertisement that caught my attention is from the commercial TIDE, it is a bar and a cleansing powder necessary for clothes. Moreover, the advertisement for me is attractive since it is entertaining and catchy particularly in the part wherein the person gets his clothes whiten up after a tide bar slides through him. In addition, Tide promotes their product that intends to have credibility, quality and can be trustworthy. All of the people is their target to use their product, they use an entertaining commercial with some catchy phrases to their clientele for the product to be encouraging. However, despite of its creative nature it is a fad since the product is not used by the youth who are the fundamental user of media.
 Pauline Villafuerte
A commercial becomes memorable when there is simplicity and clarity in the presentation, whether the approach is humorous, dramatic or slice of life. And for me, the most remarkable among all the commercials that I have seen was the FITA commercial. Seated on a bench at the park, a young man is about to take his last two pieces of Fita. From his left, a girl beats him to it and grabs it. He is left with the last piece but an old lady comes near him and wants it. He is hesitant at first, but on the latter part, he breaks the biscuit into two. Then, the lady turns into a beautiful fairy and rewards him with a wish. He answered, “sports car.” He gets it, an actual sports car cut in half, loudly dropping from the sky.
In a world full of constant changes, we, humans tend to be selfish and half-hearted to the good deeds that we are doing. What the commercial is trying to portray is the value of giving wherein you wouldn’t doubt your first instinct which is to give what you have to the one who is really in need without expecting a reward. The fita commercial is addressing the problem that is somehow, prevalent in our society and promotes the notion of “share your blessings” in a humorous and witty that definitely catch the eyes of the audience and wins the hearts of the Filipinos.
Overall, the fita biscuit is considered a trend because it’s not merely part of a moment, it’s a tool, a connector that will become more valuable as other people see it. This biscuit had been part of the barkada bonding, daily snacks and merriendas and sharing of a lot of people. Furthermore, the commercial does not only promote the value of sharing but also, it reiterates the value of camaraderie and kindness which is vital in achieving a progressive and equal society.
 Ramos, Karla Michelle A.
Do you believe in second chances? This is the question that you would not have just done it before and appreciate the things that are still on you and you will not let them disappear.
The advertisement that caught my eyes and the eyes of the crowd that penetrate into everyone’s heart is the best sequel of McDonalds, because the concept itself is relatable for everyone. McDonald’s presents a sequel; this advertisement told a story from a different perspective. The characters behind the product are the one who brings out the taste of the feeling of being broken, alone, and the feeling they have left the one you love in life in just one snap and they also added the exciting twist.  But what happened to the couple who got broken up already is right after that, the other day, they saw each other again in the same place where they have broken up the relationship they have lost. The girl smiled at his ex-boyfriend, but after she smiled at him, his ex-boyfriend was shocked by what he saw, the thing that he never gives up before, wishing her to get back to him again and realizing that he left the girl who love him so much but it will not happen again because he saw his ex-girlfriend with the guy who is willing to make her smile and will take care of her every day. And he sighed and sat down after he saw them happily together and said to himself that if “she can move on, so I can,” also he ate his burger and leave a smile on his face.
The character shows an unforgettable and heart-breaking scene to the commercial, they want to emphasize the feeling that someone you love, left you and everything is changing, you will realize that not everything will stay in a way you wanted and not everything will leave you without a reason. Moreover, the advertisement takes us to the world that we will always go back in the place where we started. They want to offer us one of their delicacy that will bring us the courage to stand up and forget everything that should not be thought out anymore and start a new one with no doubt, prove that you can be better enough for someone. Through that, you will experience the feeling of being better and how different you are now. It’s just like a burger, if you want to be better for anyone, try to be different and be an extraordinary, it will lead to a delightful taste that everyone will love the heavenly feeling of it. Additionally, they want to get more attention of people by thinking of a sequel critically that can relate it to nowadays couple. To give them a lesson learned in every mistake they did before and start over again and to those people who are giving up to their life, learn to wait and just don’t give up even though it is hard or easy to find an answer in every problem you are facing now just close your eyes and take a deep breath and believe that there are reason and purpose why are these happening in you. Try to smile and fight your problems by solving it in your own, find a way that you can be motivated again and continue what you have started.
The video became a hit on social media, they have got more attention from the crowd because of the sequel and right choice of music it fits in the concept they have made in the advertisement, but also it was an emotional scene that can affect us in a long run. According to Christina Lao, McDonald’s Philippines Marketing Director, the quick-service restaurant chain thought it would be interesting to see the point of view of Tony, the ex. “We wanted to do it in a simple but engaging way. The new video shows another day at McDonald’s, plays the song from the boy’s point of view, and shows 3 characters together — the story will write itself from there,”. Furthermore, Lao explains that McDonald’s continually tries to find different ways to tell stories as “flipping sides makes people realize that everything is never as it seems.” By teaching us if she can move on and be happy, so can you. Though it is an example of fad, it will remain as the best food advertisement for me because of how they delivered it well and make an impact that can surely caught an attention of the people. Second chances are not given to make things right. But are given to prove that we could be better enough, even after we fall. When change happens, it can be for the better. A welcome change with the new Burger McDo from McDonald’s.

As our generation increasingly inclines to modernized technologies such as computer, cable television and mobile phones, the business world flexed the horizons of their capacity by campaigning their products and services on the modern world. Due to this, I’ve watched and encountered various TV commercials and advertisements everywhere – be it on the television, radio and online sites. But despite viewing many commercials, there is only one advertisement that caught my attention. That is the 2016 Jollibee commercial entitled “Kahera”. This video is based on a true to life story of a Jollibee cashier who always serve this strict and snob old lady every day. Even her crooked nameplate and wrong pronunciation did not escape on the old lady’s meticulousness and scrutiny. Thus, she received constructive but stern feedback from this elderly regular customer. Later on, it was revealed that this old lady is the cashier’s grandmother supporting her granddaughter to achieve high positions by disciplining her in work. The grandmother keeps a tight watch to her granddaughter to ensure that the latter is groomed to do her job well and succeed.
The promotion was made to celebrate the Grandparents day. Moreover, this is part of the holistic campaign of the organization that aspires to honor and support our beloved grandparents in return especially those who continue to work despite their growing weaknesses. It targets all the granddaughters and grandsons who received the never-ending love and support of their grandparents. With this, it is necessary to reciprocate all their love, support and even their sacrifices even if it is just by honoring them on their special occasion. Since it is believed that Filipinos exhibit close family ties, almost all Filipinos have been touched by this story.
By showing the efforts our grandparents can give to us even in a harsh yet productive way, the advertisement was able to convey their message to the target audience. By this, we can infer that our grandparents can support us in every way possible even if it is not sugar-coated. Their care and provision will always be pure and wholesome that will lead us to our own betterment and success.
Jollibee Group Foundation was very creative and innovative in sharing a touching story of their own staff in advertising their products and promoting the special occasion. This led their products to trend in the market. The aforementioned company is popularly known as the Philippines’ number one fast-food brand that also steps up in the worldwide businesses. All Filipinos in all over the world crave for Jollibee products. Not only that, even foreigners advertise and ask for this fast food chain to establish their chain in their countries. Until now, Jollibee has still this large impact to the taste expectations of people. In a single city, for example, here in Lipa, multiple Jollibee stores are located and still, they reach the minimum profit enough to sustain their own stores. Surely, this business gains a lot of money but to help their fellow Filipinos in return, they provide scholarship and various programs to support underprivileged. This is another evidence that the Jollibee products are trends and not only fads. Some of these programs are Tree-Planting and Nurturing Programs, Water Management and Conservation, Waste Management, Energy Management Conservation, College and Technical Training Scholarship such as Project ACE Scholarship, Jollibee-Gawad Kalinga Villages and the Joint Program of Jollibee and KALASAG farmers. Through these programs supported by the trending products of Jollibee, sustainability can be achieved as these projects support the community through taking care of the environment and its people.

The current advertisement of Globe, the Gosurf50 promo that has data for playing Mobile Legends. It was an eye-catching for a player of Mobile Legends like me because it gives me the opportunity to play my favorite game even when I’m in outdoor places.
The increase of players of Mobile Legends is the underlying cause of such promotion and serves as the target of the advertisement. And to make the advertisement appealing, they took some essential audios and images from the game so that whenever it is being advertise, most of the players focus on it and this is the perfect timing to endorse their ‘solution’ for those who wants to play it more often whether they are at indoors or outdoors.
It is considered as a fad because the game is only for a short period of time and this is where the promotion depends on. If it decreases in popularity, such promotion will surely fade away.

What is ALS?
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) belongs to a group of degenerative diseases that progressively destroys the nerve cells or motor neurons responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. Amyotrophic means that it lost their muscle nourishment and, if that happen, it makes them smaller and weaker, where in the muscle nutrition can be found in the spinal cord. On the other hand, lateral refers to a disease that affects the side of the spinal cord while sclerosis refers to development of hardiness or scariness of the diseased part of the spinal cord.
Therefore, ALS means is a disease that weakens the muscle because of the lack of nourishment from the spinal cord which develops hardiness or scariness that affects the voluntary muscle movement including the arms, legs and chest. It begins waste muscles away. Nevertheless, it does not affect muscles in internal organ such as heart, bladder and digestive tract due to the fact that the degeneration that takes place in ALS only targets the brain and the spinal cord which then affects the voluntary muscles.
In North America ALS is often called “Lou Gehrig’s disease” after the unwavering baseball player who died from it. In 14 seasons playing for the New York Yankees, Gehrig did not miss a single game for a total of 2,130 straight games. He became known as the “iron man.” Born in 1903, he died in 1941 at the age of 38. The movie, “Pride of the Yankees”, tells Gehrig’s tragic and triumphant life story.
ALS is progressive and fatal. Usually, the cases of most patients died with motor neuron diseases are not directly connected with the said disease but from the additional illnesses they acquire because of the weakness of the body due to the aforementioned disease. However, ALS usually leads to death within 5 years of the time the diagnosis of ALS is made; the range is from 2 to 7 years.
Tumblr media
What does ALS do to the body?
Due to the deterioration of the nerve cells, the brain loses control over muscle movement, thus impairing and disabling the victim of such. Voluntary muscles produce movements like chewing, walking, and talking. Moreover, the disease is progressive, meaning the symptoms get worse over time. In ALS, both the upper motor neurons and the lower motor neurons degenerate or die, and stop sending messages to the muscles. Unable to function, the muscles gradually weaken, start to twitch (called fasciculations), and waste away (atrophy). Eventually, the brain loses its ability to initiate and control voluntary movements.
Furthermore, the ALS disease affects body systems namely: the circulatory system, respiratory, skeletal, nervous and muscular system. In the circulatory system, the said disease affects the circulation of blood that leads to swelling of some patient’s legs due to lack of blood circulation in their legs. Also, it affects the respiratory system by means of paralyzing muscles essential for breathing, and as the muscles weakens, oxygen cannot be exchanged. Carbon dioxide then builds up in the patient’s blood streams that may also cause respiratory acidosis, whereas body cannot exhale carbon dioxide. Thus, ALS patients receives oxygen therapy through mechanical ventilators. Lastly, the skeletal and nervous are also affected because the disease attacks motor neurons and disables them to make muscles moves thus the bones may loose its normal strength in order to collaborate with muscles to perform voluntary movements. And usually, the 5 senses are affected which also has motor neurons that have been disabled by this disease. And due to the disabled voluntary movements, the muscular system will stop functioning and this may lead to paralysis, loss of speech and difficulty and swallowing.

What are the symptoms?
ALS is a disease in where it can be either diagnosed, or passed down through genes. It is known to be incurable, and unable to be prevented. Early symptoms in ALS can usually be found in the arm or leg; usually a person begins to notice muscle tremors/twitches (Fasciculations), or they become clumsy due to the weakness or stiffness of their muscles. Such examples are: difficulty in buttoning shirts, writing, and awkwardness when running/walking.
Overtime the conditions get worse and more noticeable since ALS is a progressive disease. A person with ALS will begin to experience speech problems (Dysarthia), and also may have a hard time breathing (Dyspnea), and swallowing or chewing (Dysphagia). The reason for difficulty in breathing is because ALS involves the weakening of the muscles to respond to the signals from the brain in which even the lungs gradually decrease in performance.
In some instances, other experience a change in behaviour (Frontotemporal dementia or FTD); meaning they can be easily irritable, inconsiderate, apathetic, ritualistic, and impulsive. Also, once the disease reachs a certain amount of time, one may also lose the ability to maintain good posture, have troubles with their saliva and mucus (from unresponsive muscles), fatigue, and muscle cramps.
Tumblr media
What are the causes?
The certainty about ALS is that the cause of it is not known, wherein scientists do not yet know why the aforementioned disease attacks some people. However, some researchers provide evidences that both genetic and environmental play a vital role in the growth of ALS. According to Mayo Clinic (2017), there are several pre-determinants of ALS. One of these is gene mutation. Based on the research conducted, various genetic mutations can lead to inherited ALS, which causes nearly the same symptoms as the non-inherited form.
In the year 1993, factors were made and supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) determined that mutations in the SOD1 gene were associated with some cases of familial ALS. These happen to 5-10% of patients. However, it is still not clear on how mutations in the aforementioned gene lead to motor neuron degeneration, but there are increasing evidences that shows genes produce by the mutant SOD1 protein can also be toxic.
Another probable cause is hormonal imbalance wherein individuals who have higher than normal levels of glutamate, a chemical messenger in the brain, around the nerve cells in their spinal fluid are more prone of having ALS due to the fact that excessive glutamate is known to be toxic to the nerve cells in the body. On the other hand, having disorganized immune response in the body constitutes to the development of ALS in the body of an individual. Due to the aforementioned factor, a person’s immune system begins attacking some of his or her body’s own normal cells, which may lead to the death of nerve cells.
Last is protein mishandling. Some researches discovered that mishandled proteins within the nerve cells may lead to a gradual accumulation of abnormal forms of these proteins in the cells, destroying the nerve cells. Overall, the exact cause of ALS is not yet completely discerned. Furthermore, there are present researches that highlight the possibility of environmental factors such as exposure to toxic or infectious agents, physical trauma, and behavioral and occupational factors as trigger for the infestation of ALS to the body. Currently, there is no cure for ALS and no effective treatment to halt, or reverse, the progression of the disease.
Tumblr media
Who gets the disease?
According to the research conducted by the ALS Association, it is found that most of the people who acquire ALS are between the age group of 40-70 years old, with an average age of 55 at the time of diagnosis. However, cases of the disease do occur in persons in their twenties and thirties. Generally though, ALS occurs in greater percentages as men and women grow older. Other external factors were also being considered, namely: the excessive consumption of cigarettes; contact with toxins; contact with chemicals or metals, injuries, infections, or the intense physical activity; extreme physical activities and lastly, the environment.
There are several research studies administered by the ALS association that focus on the possible risk factors that may be associated with the manifestation of ALS. More work is needed to conclusively determine what genetics and/or environment factors contribute to developing ALS. Moreover, it is discerned that half of the people affected with ALS live at least three or more years after diagnosis. While, twenty percent live five years or more and up to ten percent will live more than ten years.

How did the ice bucket challenge begin?
It was summer of 2014 that changed the fight against ALS forever. Generally, it started on July 15 when Chris Kennedy, a professional golfer in Sarasota, Florida, was nominated by his friend to do the Ice Bucket Challenge. At first, the aforementioned challenge was not really linked to ALS or any particular charity. However, Kennedy chose to give the money raised by his ice bucket challenge to ALS because his cousin suffered from the disease. On the same date, he posted his video soaking himself with freezing water – noted to be the first instance in which the Ice Bucket Challenge and ALS were connected. He then challenge his cousin’s wife, Jeanette Senerchia whose husband Anthony is the one suffering from ALS. This nomination was really a joke wherein Senerchia was just going to donate money but then, she accepted the challenge and posted her video on Facebook on July 16, nominating more people and spreading the challenge throughout their hometown, Pelham, New York.
Eventually, it then reached another ALS sufferer since March 2013, Pat Quinn from Yonkers, New York because he and Senerchia have some couple of mutual Facebook friends. The campaign spread to his online community through the support of his family and friends that led to for Pete Frates, a former Boston College basketball player who has ALS too. Having a large network of supporters and engagement with the ALS community, the Ice Bucket Challenge gained more popularity and soon, all in Boston was doing it.
On August 6, Lyn Aaronson, Massachusetts Chapter Executive Director, took the same challenge on live TV with the NBC affiliate in Boston. Later on, Boston.com cooperatively dared New York and Los Angeles to do the same. Due to the wide extension of the awareness of the challenge and its purpose, many famous celebrities such as Bill Gates, Mark Zucherberg, Elon Musk, and Chris Anderson accepted the challenge and nominated more people to participate and raise awareness for ALS. Apart from the engagement and awareness, donations raised for about a hundred million dollars on August 29.
On an interview of TIME Magazine, Kennedy said “What started out as a small geture to put a smile on Anthony’s face and brings some awareness to this terrible disease has turned into a national phenomenon and it is something we could never have dreamed of.”
Tumblr media
How much has been raised?
The challenge, designed to raise money for research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, took the internet by storm. According to the national chapter of the ALS Association (ALSA), the ALS challenge brought in a staggering $115 million. In addition, the participants contributed an additional $13 million to the association’s regional branches which will fund the research that will seek to provide cure for those who suffer from ALS. Over two years, the money from the challenge has helped fund the research and development of treatment drugs and has been used as prize money to entice people to design technology for people living with the disease, which causes a rapid breakdown in a person’s ability to control muscle movement.
In addition, The ALSA reports it has spent around $47 million of the $115 million raised thus far, with two-thirds allocated toward research in five different areas: gene discovery, disease model development, identification of biomarkers, clinical trials, and drug development. Some 20% of the money has been spent on patient and community services; the remaining 11% has gone to education, fundraising, and processing fees.
According to Charity Navigator’s Acting COO Tim Gamory, the ALSA has been very forthcoming about its spending, which it put into an easy-to-read infographic as well as an exhaustive, detailed list. “We commend them for making information really transparent on their site,” he told Money in a phone interview.
Tumblr media
Is the Ice Bucket Challenge a fad or a trend?
Due to all the facts relayed, it can be easily identified that the Ice Bucket Challenge is a trend. First of all, it is because fad is a short-lived behavior or thing followed by many people. Usually, it lasts less than a month but as we have read from the previous answers, Ice Bucket Challenge lasts for one and a half month. Aside from this, trends solve problems. According to Joseph Lovinger on The Verge, Ice Bucket Challenge did really help ALS research. The $115 million raised by the challenge supported a group of researchers who have identified a gene implicated in in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease that attacks neurons in the brain and spinal cord. $21.7 million of this fund was immediately allocated to 6 different programs for searching treatments and cure by the ALS Association. While $1 million was given to Project MinE, an international collaboration that aimed to sequence the DNA of 15,000 ALS patients. The aforementioned organization already reached over 11 countries. Another characteristic of a trend is that it gets stronger over time. At first, the challenge is not really that famous. It is just widely known in a certain town or city but as time passed by, more and more popular personalities engaged in the drenching of selves to raise funds and awareness of the ALS disease. This made the challenge more trending and the funds higher. The impact of the challenge at first is not really necessary but after incorporating this to the disease, it gained more popularity. Lastly, the Ice Bucket Challenge gained a massive acceptance. Moreover, many people and organizations gave emphasis to this dare and continue spreading it to raise more funds and help the ALS patients in their suffering.
