here’s where people get it so fucking wrong:
first off, it’s not a privilege to be disabled and it never will be. this conversation is solely about relative privilege. so keep that in mind. secondly I’m talking about “masking” as “hiding your disabilities” NOT as in “wearing a face mask”. third, I am someone who is incapable of masking the fact that I’m ND but capable of masking my physical disabilities
the choice to unmask your (e.g.) autism is a privilege insofar as we can define privilege as “having a greater range of options in the way you are able to move through the world”. someone who can choose to be openly disabled is someone who does not face the same risks as other disabled people do. they can afford to prioritise their own needs because they don’t have to consider so many factors
relative to the person who can choose to unmask, the person who has to mask has less privilege. it’s a stressful way to live your life. you are fully aware that you only have the life you have because you are able to pretend to be something you’re not. it’s difficult to know that everything hinges on something that could fall away so easily
this DOES NOT mean that the unmasked person is inherently in a position of privilege. someone who could never mask in the first place or someone who lost the ability to mask against their will is not privileged. not being able to perform for job interviews makes it more likely that someone will be unemployed. not being able to perform for police and other authority figures makes it more likely that you’ll be hurt by these people, especially if you’re also a person of colour. not being able to perform in interpersonal relationships makes you more susceptible to domestic violence and other abuse. etc etc
I think some masked disabled people see the unmasked (or never masked) of us and get jealous because they see someone who is living (less of) a lie. they want to be able to Be Themselves. what they don’t understand is that choice is the key here. being forced to be myself no matter what 24/7 is not a privilege when “myself” is heavily punished and regulated. but it’s all relative, isn’t it

here’s a challenge for some of you: address your failures in upholding members of our community without immediately jumping to sexualizing them and fetishizing them

Zionists on here that are mad at Israel having to give up more hostages than Hamas are SO close to getting the point that it's actually sad.

A man in a wheelchair rolls into a liberal bar. He starts to order a drink, but another customer grabs the handles of his wheelchair, turns him around, and gives him a hard push in the other direction to get him out of the way and order a drink themselves.
The man in the wheelchair turns around and yells “Hey, what’s wrong with you?! Are you crazy?!”
The man in the wheelchair is asked to leave. Ableism isn’t tolerated here.

absolutely criminal how falling into bad habits is the easiest thing in the world while developing positive habits feels like fighting a literal war

I constantly have to remind myself that i am in fact not a man who turned into a giant beetle and died alone in his room from starvation and injuries but a man who turned into a giant beetle who survived and is now out in the world
