As always, let’s fill the month of October with as much fluff as possible 🥰 for that to happen, you can either use our 31 regular prompts or enjoy a little challenge 😏

Once again we're offering you that option and you're more than welcome to replace prompts from the original list if they don't work for you for whatever reason - no explanation needed.

As has become tradition, we offer you last year's top five fan favorites (as voted in the end survey). In addition to that, we also offer a little challenge: five angsty prompts for you to turn fluffy!

If you don't want to replace any prompt from the original list but still love the additional ones - or you simply want to challenge yourself even further - you can also mix them all together!

Standard Blog Rules & FAQ

Addendum: We do not allow AI creations of any kind.

(Due to previous asks, we made sure to add more points to this section - while they're not new rules, they're newer to this list, so you'll find them colored green)

No inc*st or p*dophilia - we can’t keep you from writing it or creating art for it but it won’t be reblogged. No inc*st: This rule does not apply to distant cousins and such, as you might find in the LotR fandom (or basically in all of European Monarchy). The line we draw is at direct blood relations (siblings, parents, kids) and/or legal guardianship. No p*dophilia: This rule does not rule out fandoms that feature teenagers such as Harry Potter, Heartstoppers, Hunger Games, etc. It also doesn't mean you can't write about their time together as teenagers! It's aimed at ships in which one is a minor and the other is not - but since even that has grey areas, the rule is this: if you keep it SFW, all is good and allowed, we don't care; if it turns NSFW, be mindful of the legalities of the world/society/times your characters live in.

No hate or ship bashing - we’re all different and we all love different things. As long as it doesn’t go against rule #1, it’s allowed.

Tag correctly! Trigger warnings (including cheating!), ships, ratings, (pure) smut, etc - it’s all fine as long as you tag it.

There’s absolutely no word count restriction, write as little or as much as you like.

In regards to art, anything goes: drawings, paintings, collages, mood boards, gif sets, videos, playlists… the sky’s the limit (though not really…). If you would like to create a podfic, the fic you're using does not have to be new - your creation will be new!

You can mix and mash different mediums however you like, be it within one prompt or on different days.

While we can’t force you to write fluff or create fluffy art, please try to keep in mind that this is a fluff event 😉 that, of course, doesn't mean you can't combine it with angsty/whumpy prompts - hurt/comfort is absolutely welcome!

You can start creating as soon as you see this - but please refrain from posting before the respective day.

If you post early, we will schedule your post for the correct day; if you use multiple prompts in one creation, we will post on the earliest day you used.

You can participate on as many days as you like, even if it’s just one; you can also create multiple entries for the same day.

You can replace as many original prompts as you like with our prompt extras; you can also combine them with the original prompts or create for them in addition, that's completely up to you.

It’s okay to write one story/a series for all the prompts.

You do not have to stick to one character, ship, or even one fandom - switch as often as you like to or even write for multiple ships for one day.

The ship does not have to be a romantic one! Friendship and family feels are more than welcome (but this is not a way to get around rule #1!)

Original works as well as OCs in fandoms are welcome! But please make sure to mark these clearly, either in the tags or the post itself. We're not familiar with all fandoms (though we're definitely learning a lot!), so we're not always sure what might be an OC and what might be such an unknown side character not even Google can find them...

Reader insert fics (for example "character x reader") as well as RPFs are absolutely allowed.

Other languages are also welcome - just make sure to clearly mark the day and fandom so that we can still easily reblog.

This event can be combined with other events as long as the other event allows it.

Late entries are always welcome, even if it is months or years later.

All fandoms and ships are welcome - fanon and canon - as long as they’re of age (in case you want to add smut) and not related.

WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don’t have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is “flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an ‘old flame’ - an old relationship. It’s truly down to you!

In total, there are 4 prompts for each day. These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives. We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks. There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day, again to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.

Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.

When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag it with:

Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants in recent years, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts from all genres will be reblogged each day.

Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed. This is based on trust and we will not check this.

TIMELINE

July: Trope voting form released. Late August: Prompt list is released for at least four weeks of preparation time. Tropes cannot be posted earlier than August 25th because of Moderator obligations in real life. (But, you know, go ahead and start writing/drawing, and add the themes in later, if you want!) September: Do as much or as little on your works as you want. You can prepare everything in advance or let September go by with vibes and start working in October. It’s up to you. October 1st: Challenge begins! A storm of whump breaks upon us all! During this time, some posts will be reblogged to the whumptober archive blog. We open the yearly AO3 collection for posting (optional). November 1st: The challenge is officially over! Completionist form opens for those who want to be included in the hall-of-fame. Early November: We release completionist and participant badges, solicit feedback, and post a hall-of-fame list of completionists by the 10th.

PARTICIPATION AND COMPLETION

Q: What counts as participation? Create or continue at least one work inspired by one of this year’s prompts. Q: What counts as completion? Creating work(s) inspired by at least one prompt from each day (or alts), for a total of 31 unique prompts. Q: Do I need to create 31 works? No. You can, if you want. Or you can create one work that you add to every day with a new prompt. Or several works that combine prompts. You can also update an existing work by adding new material with the current prompts. Q: Do I need to post my works somewhere to be a completionist or a participant? No. Q: How do you know I actually completed the challenge? We’ll take your word for it! Q: Do I have to finish my work(s) to be a completionist? No, you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish them in October, but if you want it to count towards being a completionist, you must have completed 31 prompts by the end of the month. So for example, if you’re writing a long fic and you fit 31 different prompts into the writing you did in October, it’s okay if that fic isn’t finished by the time October ends, you’ll still be a completionist. Q: Is co-writing/illustrating allowed? Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you. Q: Is there a min/max limit on word count for written works? No. Q: Is there a min/max limit of quality for art? No. Q: Do I have to do something each day to be a completionist? No. You can skip days whenever you want, and as long as 31 daily prompts (or alts) are in your works done in October, you can be a completionist. For example, if you wrote a 1000-word ficlet that covers prompts in days 2, 3, and 17, you can check all three days off your list even though it’s only one work. Q: Is this challenge just for fics? No! Artworks, GIFsets, headcannons, rec lists, poetry, moodboards, or any other creative work is encouraged. Q: Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges? Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.

PROMPTS

Q: How do the prompts work? There are FOUR prompts per day: a theme and three ideas. You can use one, two, three, or all four prompts for each day. If you don’t like any of the daily prompts, you can substitute one of the ALT prompts instead. Q: How strictly/literally should we interpret the prompts? As literally or as figuratively as you want. For example, if the theme is WATER, that could mean drowning, waterboarding, raining, swimming, take place underwater, be lost at sea, construct a metaphor about a character’s mood that changes like a flowing river, crying, or whatever else you can think of that fits that theme. Q: Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many? No limit and combine as many as you’d like. If you create a work that checks off multiple prompts, that work will count for a fill of multiple prompts. You need to address 31 different prompts to be an official completionist, but you don’t have to produce 31 separate works.

WORKS

Q: What’s whump? Hurting a character, whether that’s physically, emotionally, intellectually, psychologically, or any other way you can think of. Comfort afterwards is optional. Angst is emotional whump, so it counts. Q: How do I know if it’s whumpy enough? If your character is just mildly inconvenienced, it probably needs more whump. However, no participant has to prove whumpiness to the mods. Whatever you write is up to you. Q: What kind of characters can I create for? Anything. Generic “whumpee,” OC, PC, NPC, major characters, minor characters, or whatever you want. There are no limits. Q: Does it have to take place in a specific fandom? No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want. Q: Can I create AI-created works? We will not reblog or promote any works we know to be generative AI-created. Q: Is there anything we’re not allowed to write? As long as it contains whump and is based on our prompts, it’s fine. Please courtesy tag your works if you post them so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences. Q: What about sex, minor characters, and potentially disturbing content? You can create whatever works are legal in your country and post them accordingly. Please courtesy tag anything you think might be objectionable if you post to Tumblr so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences.

POSTING

Q: Where can I post my work? Post where and how you want. You don’t even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive. There is an AO3 archive for Whumptober 2024, as well as the parent collection for works completed outside of the event. Q: Can I start posting early? You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? We won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st. Q: Can I post late? Yes. For the sake of our hardworking Post Fairies, only a day’s themes will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive each day of October. But you can post whenever. Some of us are still working on and posting Whumptober fics from years ago. Q: Do I have to use your tags? Only on Tumblr and only if you want us to reblog your work on @whumptober-archive. Q: How do I have my works reblogged to the archive? Properly tagged posts will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive. If you want the official archive blog to reblog you, post on Tumblr and tag correctly (see this FAQ link for more info on tagging). Please note not all posts will be reblogged each day. Q: Can we @ you? For questions and comments, of course. We’ll be getting a flood of notifications, so if you really want us to see something send an ask. Q: Can I cross post on other blogs? Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable, as long as they allow cross-posting (to us). The JLD had been on the hunt for a very specific ghost artifact for a while now. So to say they were peeved when a ghost teen slipped in and stole it mere seconds before they could acquire it would be a gross understatement. Mark their words they were going to retrieve that artifact and make that ghost boy pa- side glare from Zatanna- figure out what he wants with it.

What do you think of the "Tommy was 9 in the independence war" thing i personally like it since i adds more reason why Tommy feels the need to resort to violence but the pet peeve of mine is the "Dream was 13" because that gives dream apologist a reason to defend him so that's why I raise the "Dream is a Cryptid creature and ages abnormally" theory :D

@taiyoandluna09 it's based on the fact that fundy said that there were 8 years between the founding of l'manberg to sometime after doomsday (I don't remember the exact date, but it was in the aftermath !), while tommy was canonically confirmed to be 16 during his trial leading into his exile when the terms for his probation/exile were set until he was 18 and he said that that was 2 years away (and again, when his 17th birthday stream was semi-canon)

the thing about that is, different streamers just kind of say things without talking to other streamers about it, and most of the time other streamers aren't even aware that it's been said lfjkdsa fundy especially likes adding strange time skips, for instance the 8 year thing came when he took a break after doomsday and canonized that his character had been gone for a full year soul searching.

sometimes this is unobtrusive enough that it doesn't Really matter (tommy has canonized that his exile lasted months, which other characters weren't really aware of at the time. but it doesn't really interfere with the timeline of anything that happened beyond making tubbo's lack of visiting read worse), but sometimes it can outright contradict or complicate other people's canons.

so the way I've taken to handling it is pretending everyone is in their own timeline bubble, kind of like wilbur's time dilation in limbo. fundy experienced that period of time for 8 years, while any creator whose canon contradicts that has experienced that time differently.

on that note, wilbur and tommy have said that the pogtopia v manberg war took place over about 2 years, and while we can't be sure how long the l'manberg revolution was supposed to be, it was definitely much shorter. taking that into account with tommy's canon age being set at 16 when he was exiled and I think you can read him as having been 13 to 14 during the revolution. which is much more reasonable than him having been 9 fjksldaghjfdsa

the thing about 9 year olds is that you very much so know that they are 9 years old. you wouldn't put a 9 year old on a horse, let alone lead them into battle. it changes the entire dynamic of the situation if people were letting a 9 year old fight a war and fighting a 9 year old In war. not that a 14 or even 16 year old doesn't have that problem, but it's much less exaggerated by comparison. someone who's half your height challenging you to a duel to the death reads different from someone who's just baby faced doing the same.

also that 9 year old would have to be jacked to hell to do the things that tommy did, which I do not want to think about.

so ! probable 13 to 14 year old tommy and tubbo based on the manberg timeline set by wilbur and tommy. which is plenty angst material while also being slightly more reasonable (slightly being the key term here).

as for dream being 13 (or in this case 17 to 18, which honestly seems pretty reasonable), it mostly just exists to point out how silly tommy being 8 reads but it's technically not based in canon. the minors are all the same ages as their characters because both the adults and the minors have stated that they'd be uncomfortable with minors roleplaying adults. but the adults don't really have that same restriction.

wilbur's character is currently in his 40's in canon and he has an adult child and philza is hundreds of years old. dream doesn't have a canon stated age as far as I'm aware (most characters don't, technoblade could be 21 or 210) the 13 number is based on dream the streamer's age rather than dream the character. maybe dream would've been 13 if tommy was 8, maybe he would've been 47, we don't know.

though for my last point, I do want to say that I don't really like the idea that we have to age tommy down to "explain" tommy's "violence." I really don't think it's necessary within the context of canon. this is pretty long so I'm gonna put it under a cut

stealing and griefing are completely normalized actions on the dream smp, and possibly in greater canon beyond that since it's normalized to the extent that it is here. tommy's house was griefed near daily before l'manberg was created (often times by dream) and his shit was and is constantly stolen. tommy's griefing and stealing is not only completely normal in the context of the world that he lives in, it's very often tamer than other people's, even before l'manberg.

when he felt like he'd gone too far in burning tubbo's base he apologized immediately and gave tubbo practically all of the diamonds he had to make up for it. this image of tommy as having been selfish and having to learn to be better is manufactured by a fandom that doesn't seem to be aware of the climate of the server. in the context of the rest of the server, tommy was a Childish or Rambunctious character that was going to learn to take things more seriously. he was Immature, not evil.

as for Outside of the griefing and stealing? the l'manbergians had a policy Against violence during the original l'manberg war, which was broken Because of the smp faction hitting them first and calling for war. and still it was nearly completely one sided. the smp were the ones destroying bases, stealing supplies, spawn killing, and enlisting spies. and tommy very famously used his Words to end the war. (tommy also got his position as wilbur's right had after dream grieffed tommy's base, and tommy deliberately refused to do the same to him after wilbur gave him permission to do so as a test).

and in pogtopia v manberg tommy did his absolute best to Avoid violence and killing and to protect his friends. he literally Constantly was enforcing the idea that nobody had to get hurt, nothing had to be destroyed, they just needed to take their home back. it was the key conflict between him and wilbur + technoblade.

and what came after that?

trauma from wilbur's death, trauma from months of abuse in tommy's exile, trauma from his falling out with techno, trauma from doomsday, trauma from the disc war finale, trauma from being trapped with his abuser for 3 weeks and killed for months, trauma from watching ghostbur and mexican dream die right in front of him and having someone he trusted turn around and threaten him for it.

tommy isn't an innocent angel that can do no wrong when he's in the right state of mind, but he doesn't intentionally hurt anyone when he is. it is Only when he's experiencing overwhelming trauma that he doesn't know how to process or escape that he lashes out, and even then that lashing out is made into more than it was pretty consistently by the fandom.

tommy killing jack during his exile is obviously, Uh, Pretty Fucking Bad. but tommy was completely unaware that jack had actually died. people killing each other Non-canonically to make them lose their things is a dick move, but it's also pretty normalized behavior on the smp and one that’s never lead to a canon death before. it was a prank gone wrong, and tommy tried to save him Before jack had burned (trying to throw him fire rez and an enderpearl). and when that failed, tommy immediately apologized to jack and tried to explain that he was in a bad headspace, but it obviously wasn't enough because tommy thought he was just apologizing for making jack lose his things while jack had been Murdered.

this would continue and worsen when tommy stayed with technoblade and started lashing out more consistently. the important thing to understand about this is at this point tommy has recognized that he's actively suicidal and that dream had been there to watch him, but he had Not broken out of dream's abuse completely. he went back and forth on whether or not dream was his friend, whether or not he wanted to see him. he Knew that he was confused but he didn't know what to do about that.

and the thing is, tommy's lashing out is due pretty much completely to the fact that dream had done the work to convince him that everyone he's ever loved has never cared about him, which his reactions to oscillate between self hatred (and outright suicidal tendencies) and anger. technoblade outright encouraged both the idea that his friends were bad people And that anger reaction. their entire team up was framed in terms of getting revenge and techno completely reinforces this idea multiple times while trying to convince tommy to help him destroy l'manberg.

tommy leans into more violent tendencies both has a coping mechanism to help him Survive (pushing that anger and hurt outward rather than inward) and worsens those tendencies by the enabling of an adult figure who at that point was his only source of stability like, At All.

that said, even though he did bad things while he was with techno, he Never got to the point where he would've been okay with someone dying or with destroying l'manberg. even with the scene that technoblade tried to convince him to do exactly that he clearly and obviously emphasized that l'manberg was his and tubbo's home, how he didn't want them to get hurt. he obviously didn't Want l'manberg gone, but he wanted the friendship that techno offered him in exchange for helping destroy it.

he pulled himself out of this spiral when he hit his own limits, when he said something that hurt tubbo in a way that struck a cord with him. at which point he Immediately apologized and gave everything up to switch sides. he'd go on to continue apologizing, making the active choice to grow and choose kindness over revenge, leading up to both doomsday and the disc war finale. it was the entire Message of the disc war finale, they were saved because they made and tended to connections with other people.

tommy went out of his way to find and return mars to sapnap during doomsday, he apologized for ever making him lose something that he loved just because he'd been hurt. and he asked sapnap to join them, which he did. and when dream tried to make one last rush towards tubbo when everyone came out of that portal it was Sapnap who stepped between them and told dream to "Get away from them."

after that tommy went out of his way to try to avoid any conflict and violence. he roleplayed animal crossing while building his hotel for a month, multiple characters tried to pull him into the egg plot and he refused because he didn't want to make people upset. he was legitimately just minding his own business while people plotted his death around him.

the One instance that people point towards after this point is pussboy, and honestly at this point I'm going to kill that cat myself.

here's some things to note: 1: killing pets is normalized on the server, it's not a very nice thing to do but it's very easy to do by accident because they aren't sentient and everyone is playing a video game. literally every single character has killed someone's pet, usually multiple (especially multiple if you're sapnap). dream killed mushroom henry in front of tommy's face, he's killed tubbo's bees in front of tommy's face. tommy had been actively Warning tubbo against showing dream that he cared about his animals because he knew that that dream would hurt them for that reason, which he did.

2: the, you know, the multiple times that dream killed tommy’s friends right in front of him. the final control room, the disc war finale (which didn’t end in a death but would’ve been immediately traumatic to experience), dream killing mexican dream in front of tommy twice until he died fully, dream killing ghostbur right in front of tommy.

3: killing pussboy Was an accident. he was trying to get pussboy to move onto the floor, and the only action you have to try to move an animal in minecraft that won’t move on their own is punching. it’s his reaction Afterwards that’s intended to tell us where his mental state is right now, and the answer to that is Bad. what happened to pussboy was an accident, but tommy was far enough gone to lash out and try to hurt dream even a fraction of the way that he’d hurt him.

4: the context behind this action was tommy being actively retraumatized on purpose for a week straight while isolated with his abuser with nowhere to go. the fact that tommy lashed out at all shouldn’t even be a blip on the morality radar, anyone would fold in that situation. but it’s the fact that it’s something that Tommy never would have done intentionally under better circumstances that makes it shocking. it’s not about dream’s reaction, it’s not about painting tommy as a murderer that Deserved to be killed, it’s about illustrating just how Awful his state of mind is even while he’s been doing everything he can to resist dream’s attempts at reconditioning him.

5: if anyone at this point thinks that dream cares about a cat more than he cares about tommy they’re not actually paying attention to canon. dream would give anything for control over tommy, dream Has given anything for control over tommy. he considers tommy to be the key to Everything, because he stripped away every other attachment that he had until all he had left to obsess over Was tommy himself. he started tommy’s extended stay with him begging tommy to stay with him and emphasizing how Much he wanted to experience exile with him again, and when he brought tommy back he proudly proclaimed that he and tommy were going to be immortal together.

godhood to dream isn’t having control over life and death, it’s having control over Tommy’s life and death. which is exactly why dream killed tommy when tommy insisted that the revival book wasn’t real. he had to make a point about his control over tommy because having that control over tommy is what he cares about most in the world. more than all of his friends, more than all of his pets, more than all of his things, more than his own freedom, more than his own life.

so no, I don't think we have to say that tommy was 9 for his actions to make sense. tommy's actions are largely normalized in the world that he exists in and the points where we see him genuinely lashing out to hurt people are the result of extreme trauma instead of innate badness. but he’s never used the fact that his actions were influenced by his trauma as an Excuse for them, consistently taking responsibility for them and Choosing to grow and and apologize for the sole reason of wanting to be a good person that treats other people with kindness and humanity. the only exception being his attempts to murder dream and killing dream, but I reckon he doesn’t exactly owe dream an apology.

tommy’s plan to kill dream hinged on the fact that dream openly planned to use the revival book to torture everyone on the server, something that tommy knows that he’d be willing to do if he escaped both because he’s seen dream kill people before and because dream tortured Him with the revival book just to make a point, there’s no telling what dream could do with it when his actions are motivated by pure malice with someone who he doesn’t actually want to keep. that isn't tommy being a violent person, that's tommy putting himself in a self-sacrificial position to try to save the rest of the server from someone he knows is dangerous despite the retraumatization and discomfort it causes him.

Vlad tricks the Fentons into sending danny to Hive Academy (so he can learn to be his evil apprentice/son or some shit). maybe by saying that its a super prestigious school that anyone would kill to attend, or like, its a school that specializes in helping troubled youth and setting them up on the path to successes (yeah successful super villains), or some other vapid nonsense. either way Jack and Maddie fall for it and decide to send Danny there.

Danny probably doesn’t know exactly what Hive Academy(H.A.) is about, but he knows enough to understand that he doesn’t want anything to do with the place. maybe cause Vlad said something to him, or he overheard Vlad talking to someone about him attending. but he doesn’t get a choose about going, cause Jack and Maddie think it’ll fix danny’s school problem.(it won’t, its just replacing 1 set of problems for another)

from there, there would be a lot of danny+sam+tucker freaking out about danny not being there to protect the town from ghosts(maybe Jazz and Valerie too) And them trying everything they can think of to get danny out of it. nothing works but they still try.

after that Im not really sure about the specific stuff. Danny would probably do really well at H.A. cause the whole point of the place is to teach super powered kids how to use those powers (even if the reason completely clashes with danny’s morals) And then maybe Danny meets another kid there that doesn’t want to be a villain so the 2 of them team up to… idk, rat the school out to the heroes and shit happens from there.

DP x DC: The Dead Man at the Diner

Danny has a hard time maintaining regular jobs. At this point he’s pretty much nocturnal after years of being attacked at night, and possibly just part of his ghostly nature. He’s odd, and a basic google search brings up various news articles about him getting into fist fights with the mayor of a small town. He barely passed high school and college was out of the question, so who in their right mind would hire him?

What’s a job that would work with his odd hours, doesn’t require a college education, and a possible criminal record and a tendency to be ready to throw down is NOT an issue?

Danny is a cook at a 24hour Diner in Gotham

The man just needs to be able to flip a burger and make breakfast food and doesn’t mind a gun in the face because he’s well used to it. So what if the robber was dumb enough to pull that shit next to the fryer. If he didn’t want something to end up extra crispy he should have stayed out of Danny’s kitchen

Just think of all the folks he would meet.

Sure, the vigilantes of the city would be obvious and you can’t tell me spoiler isn’t dragging folks there to eat. Maybe they notice some weird things about the cook, like he doesn’t breath, his eyes reflect light like an animal’s, or the time he accidentally cut off a finger and it was fine the next day, or maybe the time a robber shot him and he just... didn’t react

And of course the person I think would love a jersey style diner breakfast at all hours: Harley Quinn

Technically she’s not supposed to bring the hyenas in, health code and all that, but everyone else is to freaked out to tell her and Danny doesn’t care. Frankly he spends his break petting them and they like him because he smells like food.

designs for a zine piece! enjoy some background story my illustration never needed under the read more (fair warning I did NOT edit this at all):

newbie mage apprentices Sam and Tucker who became friends bc they're kinda… the ones at the bottom of their class and struggle the most, for different reasons. they become besties over time and practice together!

except one night, something goes terribly wrong. they spent the last few nights preparing for a project, a bigger spell that needs an intricate circle with precise measurements to work. but when they try to activate it, well…

oops. they summoned a demon.

which is, for one, extremely illegal. only certified demonologists are allowed to summon demons because they're so dangerous. anything less than a perfect binding circle and thoroughly researched info on the demon, including their true name, is even remotely safe.

but, weirdly enough… the demon seems just as surprised as they are. as Sam and Tuck frantically try to figure out how to dispel the demon, they realize–oh god, did their circle actually sufficiently bind the demon? it can't leave. they watch the demon tentatively poke it's claws into the air around the boundary, and watch it fizzle, retreating back with a strained hiss.

okay. okay, they can do this. without death looming over their heads, they can figure out how to send the demon back. it's cool, it's fine. except while they leaf through their books, they notice the demon watching them. it looks kind of… curious. timid. interested in what they're doing. it catches them noticing his staring, and it. apologizes? it seems flustered?

weird, okay. they keep looking, and the demon starts talking. at first, little comments to itself. mumbles that soon get just loud enough to hear. little “ooh, is that a telescope?" and “is that what fire looks like up here?" and “that must be for making charcoal…”

Sam is the one brave enough to be like "are all demons as chatty as you??” and the demon gets flustered again, apologizing. says he's just never been topside before, he's only read about humans in tomes. oh wow is that the moon outside? it really IS blue up here! is it always blue? what are you doing up? I thought humans slept at night?

Sam and Tuck can't help getting pulled in with the demon's genuine curiosity. they're wary though, since they know demons can be clever, conniving. there's a number of ways a demon can get the upper hand on a summoner who has them bound. if he gets their full names, gets them to smudge and break the circle… there could also be ways they aren't aware of. so they consider their words carefully, but engage in some chatter while they research.

it's almost morning by the time they find a way to send the demon back–but as they prepare the spell, the demon says WAIT WAIT and they stop, uncertain. the demon starts stammering out how this is weird but like… he really had fun tonight. he doesn't get to just hang out much, especially with anyone his age.

Tuck is like “how do you know our ages??" and the demon points out "oh, you said something about Paulie’s 18th birthday party, so I thought…” and they're both like oh shit we didn't even notice we did that?

“Paulina" Sam corrects in her dumbfounded stupor.

“Right, Paulina!" the demon snaps his fingers, but quickly loses his confidence when Sam and Tuck continue to stare at him like they're not sure what's going on. he coughs and fidgets and says “um, well, I was just wondering, I guess… if you wanted to summon me another time, I wouldn't mind. you see those circles there? yeah, that's what summoned me. the candles helped too I think. oh, it doesn't need all those runes though, probably don't want to redraw all those.”

Sam and Tuck are practically gawking, but… for some reason, this demon looks so sincere. so much like them, awkward and lonely and genuinely curious.

it's a bad idea. a terrible one, even. the demon probably noticed they're newbies and not demonologists. it could be hoping they make an error in their circle, or mess up a candle, or reveal their names on accident.

But, well. They're stupid. they're also eager for anything to help them in school, and too empathetic for their own good. they send the demon off with a yeah, no. they then think about it for a week, and end up summoning the demon against their better judgment.

the demon is shocked and so happy, they can't help but be a little endeared. they lay down some ground rules, take care to be as safe as possible… and soon, this demon that introduces himself as “Phantom" becomes a nightly visitor. they talk about their worlds, find out they share a lot of common interests, and help each other in their studies. which, hello, demons also study? bro are you serious??

they play games, laugh till their ribs hurt, and open up to each other on a far deeper level than anyone expected. over time, Phantom becomes a true friend.

Sam and Tuck quietly begin to lament the fact Phantom is stuck in that damn circle. they want to take him places, let him see the human world he seems so interested in. they want to paint his stupid claws and noogie him between his dumb horns and hug him.

but it's an astronomical risk. it's legal for a demonologist with a proper permit, but it's still considered a grave taboo to grant access to a demon outside a circle. there's just too much at risk. demons can be dangerous enough to lay waste to entire towns, take multiple teams of military-rank mages to take down.

they wouldn't risk it… if they hadn't snuck into the library’s restricted section and copy a page from a demonologist book that gives them good framework for a contract. they make some edits to it though, giving Phantom at least a little wiggle room to protect himself if need be. and allow him use of transformation magic so he can hide somehow. but they spend weeks making sure they have airtight wording to ensure Phantom can't cause anyone or anything any substantial harm.

when they finally bring the contract to Phantom, he's stunned. he cries. nothing needs to be said, they all know the gravity of their proposal. even if they ask for proof of Phantom's trust in turn, first. they ask for his full name, so they can bind him. just temporarily. but in that moment, they'll have full control over him. they could instead tell Phantom to serve them, force him to obey their every order. even if it's just for a moment, giving them his full name with the proper circle and incantation, is putting his life in their hands.

Phantom, with tears still in his eyes, smiles warmly and nods. with only a breath to steel himself, he gives them his full name. Daniel James Fenton.

magic sparks in the circle, and Sam and Tuck finish the incantation. ethereal chains sprout up to wrap around Phantom's arms and legs, which makes him jump–but the unwavering trust in his eyes makes the two humans choke up.

they release the binding. all that's left is to break the containment barrier in the circle, so Phantom can walk free.

“Uh, about that…” Phantom laughs sheepishly… then proceeds to step outside of the circle, merely wincing when the barrier zaps around him.

Sam and Tucker gawk. Phantom scratches his neck. “Y-yeah, so… your barrier circle was already broken that first night. It's, uh… right over there. You missed a spot.”

abject horror overcomes them because this entire time Phantom's been visiting, he could have broken out? EASILY?? THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD.

Tucker falls to his knees, but soon starts to laugh. it's kind of hysterical at first but slowly, he and Sam are genuinely laughing. they're so STUPID, and Phantom is the most un-demonlike demon they've ever HEARD of. Phantom is still flustered, stammering out apologies because he wasn't trying to deceive them or anything! he just didn't want to scare them! without a proper containment circle they technically couldn't send him back either, so he just… went back using his own magic each time they “dispelled" him.

once they've calmed down, Phantom morphs his body into a human form–which shock Sam and Tuck, because uh, only elite demons are capable of that. they were expecting an animal, or straight up going invisible. Phantom laughs it off, says he just, spent a lot of time practicing bc he's so interested in the human world (not a lie, but). he proceeds to adopt the nickname Danny, and they all have FUN WONDERFUL SHENANIGANS

(and sometime in the near future, when faced with something truly threatening he needs to protect them from, Danny reveals that. well. their contract also had some holes in it. and he's had access to his full demon power this whole time. whoopsie! it's a good thing he genuinely loves them and doesn't want to hurt anyone, or their asses would be SO dead lol)

they're about as normal about his full demon form as you'd expect from me btw:
