“My aunt's high school reunion was the last place I wanted to be this weekend, but it turned out to be a lot more fun than I expected.”

Saturday of June 2024 in the midst of summer
Honestly , I didn’t feel very enthusiastic about this weekend trip to Gallego Private Resort. My aunt was planning her high school reunion and I thought I was going to spend my weekend listening to adult’s stories and gossiping. My brain was still stuck on "Weekend Mode: Sleep In,” and the idea of waking up for a reunion was just. .. ugh (and its still 5 in the morning for God sake)
However, family is family .Also, she stated that there would be free food. Therefore, I got up from the bed, put on some clothes and tried to convince myself that a weekend getaway wasn't that bad.
My aunt arrived at my house, and I could tell she was already in a good mood. She was buzzing with excitement, talking about all the things we were going to do . I just nodded along, trying to look excited of whatever’s going to happen. (Honestly, I was just trying to figure out if I had enough time to grab a quick bite before we left.)
The car ride was. . . interesting. The car was bumpy and my aunt was even more talkative and neither was good for my upset stomach and I ended up getting car sick on the way there. (Let’s just say I should have eaten breakfast before we left. ) My aunt, bless her heart, tried to distract me by talking about my future, already planning my college life and suggesting I stay at my cousin’s boarding house. She also said that we were going to the mall next week after the reunion. That kind of cheered me up a little. Shopping mall trips are always fun.
We eventually got to the resort and I was quite shocked as to how beautiful the place was. It was not one of the most beautiful resorts I have ever been to, but it looked quite…nice. Tropical grasses, a swimming pool, and a rather laid-back setting.
My cousins were already there arranging the tables and chairs for the reunion we were to have later that evening. I followed them, pretending I was actually doing something useful while simultaneously attempting to dodge the prospect of being roped into a discussion about my aunt’s high school experience.
The reunion itself was a little hazy. My aunt’s friends were all very friendly but I could not help but feel slightly uncomfortable. They were all chatting about their past and I was simply wondering where they had kept the snacks! My cousins and I got bored and decided to run around the place and entertain ourselves. We had some time to take a few photos, talk about anyone and everything that comes to our mind and just try to escape from the adult talk.
The best moment of the weekend would have to be the karaoke night. Well, it did not occur at night as the word ‘night’ suggests but it was in the afternoon, it was fun all the same. All my aunt’s friends were surprisingly good singers and they sang songs of their choice one after the other. As for me, I am not a big fan of karaoke and can hardly be called a karaoke star. I did not want to sing, but my aunt urged me to do it. I was forced to sing a song by a band I literally dont know, and let’s just say that the performance was unforgettable.
(I am sure that the staff of the resort was behind the bar, watching the performance of a bad singer, which was me. )
The rest of the afternoon was spent swimming in the pool after the karaoke session that was also entertaining. That was the best way to cool off after all the singing. We swim, have fun, and take as many pictures as we could. Despite being the one whose in charge of taking the pictures for the trip, I still took some selfies (Shame! But hey, it’s for the ‘gram).
The evenings were just as beautiful as the days were. We had our meals at a restaurant nearby the resort and really tasty meals, and then went to sleep at a hotel room. As the stars came out, we’d sit on the balcony, breathe in fresh air and look at the beautiful view.
On the next day, we decided to spend it in the pool. It was a hot day after all , and the water was the perfect temperature. We spent the rest of the day splashing around, laughing, and taking photos. (Again)
After the day was over,I was a little sad to leave, but I wasn't exactly heartbroken. I mean, it was a nice resort, but I've definitely seen better. (I'm not saying I'm a resort snob, but I've got standards.)
The drive home was a lot smoother than the drive there. I had learned my lesson about breakfast, so I was feeling much better. My aunt continued chatting about something and I just nodded along. (Honestly, I was just trying to figure out what I was going to eat for dinner.)This trip was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you share with the people you love. And let's be honest, who doesn't love a good karaoke session?
P.S. I'm still not sure what my aunt and her friends talked about during their reunion. My cousins and I were busy making our own kind of noise, about 15 kilometers away from the adult conversation.
