Unspoken social rules in Finland

big warning before you read: this is just an opinion. I have been reading Reddit and other sites like that a lot, and some people have been asking about unspoken rules in Finland. I moved from the extreme countryside to Helsinki and have noticed these firsthand and since you don't really meet people on the streets back where I grew up, I will focus on Helsinki manners. Again, this is just my opinion and not absolute laws set in stone!

No perfume. Many public places like libraries will have signs that say not to come in if you are wearing scents. You might think your scent doesn't smell THAT bad, but it does. Shower and come back!

If you have a big backpack or luggage, be extra mindful. In trains, there are spots where your luggage will fit without needing to put it in the middle where people walk or, god forbid, THE SEATS NEXT TO YOU?

If you know that you cannot focus on your phone and the traffic in front of you, do not look at your phone while walking. You are expected to make way at all times.

More on making way- both me and you need to make way. If I am approaching on a narrow street walking on the side, you cannot walk in the middle (the other person made way already, right? Wrong.) You must also move to the side as much as possible.

Finnish personal space is big. Whatever European personal space is, you need to double that by two (or three). If a Finn can extend their arms and touch you, you are in their space. If a Finn is for example waiting for the light to turn green and you come to wait at the same crossing, you should stand on the other side of the zebra crossing waiting space (???).

Have headphones on, do not listen to audio without headphones in public. (This one divides people a lot these days. Apparently, the young generation is more OK with this)

If you have to take a call in public transit/inside a public space, talk quietly. This doesn't apply outside, however, yelling is still frowned upon.

General quietness is appreciated. Talk quiet, shut doors quiet, etc.

BIG ONE IN THE CAPITAL REGION!!! Do anything on the right side. On escalators, stand on the right. The left side is for people running down to be somewhere in time. Walk down the stairs on the right. Walk on the right in the hallways and streets. If you and your friend are walking together somewhere narrow, make a queue if someone is coming. Queuing is expected at all times on escalators. You must not stand on The Left Side of The Escalator.

When a public transport vehicle stops at your stop, you will see people waiting for people to come out on the immediate sides of the door. Do not try to get on first. Do not wait for people to get off right in front of the door! Makes the flow of people faster.

Sit on the window seat if a double seat is available. (Idk what kind of people wouldn't) DO NOT SIT NEXT TO SOMEONE IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE, people will move away from you and then it's awkward for both of you.

TLDR: Be quiet and mindful, walk on the right at all times. Be yourself! Have fun!

I'm also learning Finnish and seeing others learn it motivates me even more! Who can you recommend for watching vlogs?

Hey!! Yess I've seen your posts, same thing here! It's not easy to find people who are learning it so it's always cool to come across other learners :)

About vlogs, gotta say it's content I don't usually watch in my native language or English, but for Finnish seems like the easiest since it's very day to day vocab!

One of the first channels I started watching was KATTIS since when I started I couldn't find almost any videos with the subtitle option and she mixed lots of English expressions and had texts in the screen quite frequently, so it made it a little more enjoyable (I'm so thankful for the youtube subtitle update, lifesaver) Also I find the girl quite funny and her videos are very dynamic! here

Another one of the first channels I came across was Lotta Liikanen. Her videos are a bit longer, way more vibey and aesthetic and little less talking but hey sometimes that's all you need. here

The girl I've been watching the most lately tho is Anni Suvisuo. I'm really liking her videos, they feel bit more "realistic" than others, plus she posts quite frequently. Definitely one of my favs! here

I feel like those channels are the ones I watch more consistently, but I'll drop some names of other girls I'm subscribed to and watch from time to time: Linda Noora, Pauliina, Zane Manninen, Katri Konderla, Laura Rosilla... and honestly anything interesting looking in Finnish that youtube recommends me in an attempt to train the algorithm to stop showing me videos in Spanish haha.

As a little plus, reading is a big hobby of mine so I also like to watch some book related videos, tho I tend to have them more in the background since the vocab, specially when describing plots, is more advanced. Can't wait to be able to understand them a bit more because it's content I really like watching in any language.

For this I'd recommend neareadsnovels, she uploads pretty frequently with quite interesting videos that I'd love to fully understand, but man the girl talks fast haha. Really like her vibes! here

I also watch NuotioBee, pretty nice videos and normally the exact length of my bus trip to work so quite nice! here

What exactly does "niin" mean? So far I've narrowed it down to either (a.) everything; or (b.) nothing.

It’s something between that.

Niin can be a way of describing an amount: Söin niin paljon! I ate so much!It also can be a positive reply to a question: Koirasi on löytänyt elämän tarkoituksen? -Niin (juuri). Your dog has discovered the meaning of life? - Yes, (that’s right).

Niin can be a way of explaining how things went, kind of. Niin tähän päädyttiin. That’s how we got in this situation.

It has been also used in old texts (i.e. bible translations & fairytales) to describe what happened after something: Ja niin he elivät elämänsä onnellisina loppuun asti. And so they lived their lives happily ever after.

But wait! There’s more!Niin is also a coordinating conjuction when used with the word pair kuin:

Karaokea lauloivat niin Pirjo kuin Railikin. Both, Pirjo and Raili, sang karaoke.

Älkää tehkö niin kuin minä teen, tehkää niin kuin minä sanon. Don’t do as I do, do as I say.

Hän näytti siltä niin kuin olisi saanut turpaansa. He looked like he had been beaten up.

It can also be used to describe words starting with spesific letter: V niin kuin Verikosto, V for Vendetta

Don’t go! There’s one more:

It can also be a starting word for declarative sentence when it’s after conditional sentence:Jos lähden nyt, niin en koskaan palaa! If I leave now, then I will never return!

And then, it can used as a part of proper Finnish one-worded communication:

Niin? - Yes, what is it about?Niinkö? - Is it true?Niinpä. - I strongly agree.Niinpä niin - I should’ve known that. Damnit.

one idea that English-speaking people who are learning Finnish need to get rid of is that you can take an English sentence, write each word in Finnish and call it a day! translated! when you are learning a new language, you should observe your own speech; what is an idiom? what does this "is" point to? what does "coming" in "I'm coming" mean?

And for those who cannot speak Finnish yet, I have translated the English text word for word, making it nonsense in Finnish. Yes I know Finnish.

Olen Ben, 31 vuotta, minä asua pohjoisessa Englanti. En ole koskaan käynyt Suomessa, mutta haluaisin. Olen pikkuhiljaa oppinut suomen kieli noin kuusi kuukausi nyt.

Olen alku suomalaista klubi/koulu tammikuussa ja haluan enemmän harjoittelua.

This is literally just a place for me to collect resources, to learn from others and to inevitably have a breakdown when I start to panic in class.

I started on Duolingo which is notoriously dreadful for Finnish, so until around a month ago that was my entire experience. I've now taken up more apps and a few textbooks and websites, but I'm hoping Finnish club will help more than learning about vihreä undulaatti, joka on viikinki.
