how to save money as a broke student
this post is based on the post from @minimaliststudy (check it out here!) and i would just like to add some information & links for hk students and maybe some apps are also international so you guys could also use!
making money
tutoring
definitely a quick and relatively easy way to make a quick buck. here’s a tip: know your worth.
story time: i signed up to tutor a form 1 (grade 7?) english but i ended up having to tutor him in every subject. i made notes and references and everything and ended up making 100HKD for 1.5 hours (that’s a bit less than 13USD/10 pounds for 1.5 hours of work AND making notes and mock tests)
make your time well spent on making the notes for the student. don’t let people exploit you! of course, you have to live up to your price and actually give good notes and good advice to the student, but don’t take less than you deserve and when the time comes, ask for a raise.
here are an app for tutoring that i used: Stapps (for hk students only)
sell your old clothes, books, notes, and your skills
make sure that your books are in the best condition they could possibly be in! it sounds like a no-brainer, but some people don’t even try to package their products well and it just looks too poor to be reused again, which discourages people from buying it
be the demand if there is a market for it: search for popular items that run out quick and be the market for the demand
be smart about the timing: around back-to-school season at around late july/early august, people would be frantically searching and buying textbooks. post your used (or unused) textbooks during that time to increase your chances of being picked by the customer
pricing: make sure that the price you post is reflective of the condition of your products. don’t overcharge for used and worn out products
choose your words right: wording is extremely important. don’t use overcomplicated words, and try to get down to the most commonly searched words for that item. for example: your product is a biology textbook for the HKDSE syllabus. your key words can be “biology textbook dse” and that would pop up as a result for “biology”, “biology textbook”, “dse”, “dse textbook”, and “biology dse”
try to meet up if possible: try to avoid the possibility of a mailing malfunction and it never reaches them. besides, mailing a heavy package may not be ideal for the extra price. if you are going to meet up, please be safe. meet up in crowded or popular places like the mtr (subway, metro, train station, whatever you call it in your country)
make it picture-perfect: post a decent picture of the item. show the sides, interior, and exterior of the item you’re selling (if possible). a relatively more aesthetic and well-formatted picture will catch people’s eye more than a half-assed blurry picture of your product. be clear and concise.
have a good attitude when conversing with your client: they leave reviews for you, so please please please be nice to your client. try to keep a high rating on your platform so people are more willing to buy your products
here are some apps that i’ve used:
Carousell (hk)
Etsy
Depop
other
keep track of your savings and spendings
i’m using this app now and this is absolutely not a sponsor but i’m not sure if it works overseas but here’s an app that i highly recommend: Planto
it works for hk banks and this is made in hk for hk ppl but ppl from overseas maybe you could try it out to see if it works? it’s free (unsure about additional charges tbh but all normal and required services are all free) and you can input all your cards into the app and it’ll track your expenditure, income, and you can even set goals on how much you want to save! it’s genuinely a great app and it sends u weekly notification so you can check up on your weekly spendings and make sure that you’re on the right track and is following your budget plan

introductory post (updated)
so it has been 2 years and i’ve grown as a person so i would just like to post an updated introductory post to reintroduce new followers to my blog!
hi! i am yvette (or yvet for short). i’m 18 and i’m from hong kong🇭🇰. i’ve finished my HKDSEs and graduated high school. in the academic year of 2019-2020, i’ve decided to take a gap year to retake my DSEs and work part time & freelance jobs for money.
i’m still very much a stereotypical ravenclaw, gemini, and just a regular enfp. nothing too special. i’ve decided to continue this blog because i need motivation to start working hard and not letting myself slip again because i really desperately need those grades and that sweet sweet scholarship money (rip)
THIS IS STILL NOT A STUDYBLR - IT’S A MOTIVATION BLOG
also i do track #a-ofcolour so please please tag me there~
my ask is open (anon is allowed!) and as usual, rude, mean, and inappropriate messages will be deleted.
my submit box will be open for special projects so look out for that
some things don’t change - i still can’t fucking draw
i’m still polysexual and still very gay but i’m dating a guy now! (edit: we've broken up and i'm super gay so girls hmu;) )
5 of my favourite youtubers for motivation:
eve cornwell
kickthepj
implicitly pretentious
bertie gilbert
jack edwards
5 of my favourite youtubers for entertainment:
danny gonzalez
tom harlock
drew gooden
thomas sanders
simply nailogical
5 of my favourite musicians/bands: (spotify links)
Banners
dodie
Teddy Swims
Ben Platt
Ludovico Einaudi
that’s pretty much it!

i’m back!
hey guys! sorry i’ve been extremely inactive for 2 years wow
here are just 5 things that have happened in these 2 years!
1. i am now 18~
2. i graduated high school
3. i finished my HKDSEs (like A-Levels, or SATs. whatever your countries’ final high school grad test is)
4. i am taking a gap year!
5. i’m working 3 jobs (oof) okay it’s actually not that bad it’s just 1 regular part time job, 1 freelance/seasonal part time job, and 1 tutoring job
so actually i’m retaking my DSEs this year (2020) and also simultaneously working 3 jobs AND learning a completely new subject for DSE
we’ll see how that goes! i hope i can come to this blog once in a while to update you guys on how things are going on and we can be productive together bc we have no other choice:(
but we can have fun working and being productive!
i hope posts resume and i won’t take another 2 year hiatus lmaoo
so yeah follow along if u want to and my ask is always open for questions or anything you would like to say!

Morning Habits Worth Starting (Especially for College)
Give yourself enough time to get ready before you have to leave in the morning. For me this means setting my alarm about an hour before the time that I have to get my foot out the door. Eat a proper breakfast, do a little stretching, figure out your plan for the day. Having a slower paced morning is a lot more relaxing, and you can get your day started correctly.
Drink water first thing. I used to be a pretty heavy coffee drinker in the mornings in high school, but I realized that I could get away with a lot less caffeine if I started my morning off with a nice glass of cold water. You’re probably dehydrated after sleeping and water helps wake you up.
Make your bed. Making your bed is a visual reminder that sleeping time is over and that it’s time to get up! If I have a messy bed, I want to climb in and snuggle back into my blankets. This is especially true in the winters when it’s cold and dark. The movement also helps you wake up, which brings me to my next point:
Move! Your! Body! You don’t necessarily have to run through an entire yoga routine or go for a run (but hey, props to you if you do), but getting some movement in your mornings will help you wake up. I like to stretch a little bit, warm up my joints, maybe loosen up my limbs. It helps to get your blood flowing.
Open your curtains. In the winter it might be kind of dark and depressing where you live, so this isn’t always something recommended. I like to open my curtains when it’s sunny out so I can get some natural light, which helps your circadian rhythm so you wake up better - and fall asleep at night better.
Do something productive before your class begins. If your first class is super early, this might not apply. But I find it tremendously helpful to get something done, whether it be a flash card set, a work out, or a load of laundry, before my first class. It’ll get you into a productive mood for the rest of the day, and even if you aren’t productive for whatever reason, you can go to sleep knowing that at least you got something done that day!

how to save and make money as a student
making money
tutoring! one of the easiest to make good money in limited time! you don’t have to make home calls if you sign up to an online tutoring agency and tutor over skype
sell your old clothes. to friends/classmates or online (eBay or depop are my favourite platforms)
sell your old notes. this is easily done online and a good way to make a little extra cash
sell your skills. sites like etsy and redbubble are good places to make money off your creative talents
saving money
save £1378 in a year with my free printable
make coffee and tea at home. those daily £3 coffees add up quickly
take your own mug to coffee shops. if you can’t resist the temptation of a coffee shop coffee take your own mug. pret a manger gives you a 50p discount if you bring your own mug and caffe nero gives you double stamps
don’t carry money with you all the time. this will just make you tempted to spend
never buy another bottle of water. carry a reusable bottle with you, bottled water is very very overpriced considering most cafes will refill your bottle for free
don’t use apple pay. if you always have access to money you’ll be much more tempted to go into that shop and buy the top you passed in the window
food prep! carry snacks and a packed lunch with you to avoid pricey snack bars and ready meals. this is also an easy way to be healthier
home cook. this is always cheaper than eating out and 99% of the time cheaper than pot noodles/ramen. home cooking is even more affordable if you do it in bulk or with friends
borrow and download free ebooks and audiobooks as much as possible
make good use of the library. instead of buying books borrow them for free, a library membership is often free if you belong to a university/college but a membership is still often cheaper than buying lots of books if you’re a big reader
bring reusable bags to avoid paying for plastic bags and be kinder to the environment.
go paperless. avoid printing costs and look after the environment
cut your own hair. going to the hairdressers is expensive and can be saved as a treat but if you just need to trim your split ends there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do it yourself or get a friend to help you
pre drink! if you are going out then drink alcohol at home it’s much cheaper than buying it in pubs or bars
other
use cash. it’s much easier to avoid spending money and stick to your budget when you can see exactly how much you have
keep track of your saving and spending. i love the ‘pocket expense’ app. this will also show you what things you are overspending on
collect coupons and loyalty cards. points make prizes!
create a culture of clothes borrowing among your friends. instead of always buying new things for events

Okay, you messed up, whatever it is didn’t go to plan. Maybe you didn’t study today. Maybe you procrastinated all day. Maybe you gave up on that essay you need to write. Maybe you didn’t write that lab report. Maybe you had to sit a test without being prepared and are pretty sure you failed. So what? Mistakes happen, they’re a part of life and there’s nothing you can do now. Where do you go from here? Give up entirely or learn from this experience and do the best you can from now on? You can come back from this, it’ll be okay.

As a student, it’s so important to love yourself because if you don’t it’s going to translate into sacrificing your wellbeing for grades and not being able to cope with failure because you let it define you. So I’m telling you now, grades do not determine your worth as a person. If you can convince yourself that you are worthy and valuable as an individual, you’ll find your journey so much less stressful.
