Random Mid-Fic Thought: Could you draw a line between Max's secret keeping and Gwen's not telling Kevin shit during the third season of AF? Or are these distinct, separate flaws within the family tree?

The fact that Ragatha wasn't able to speak during this scene, just to nod or shake her head, is something that hit WAY TOO CLOSE to home.

I know I'm self-projecting, but I'm sure that she was lost in her own thoughts, beating herself up, and that she developed this as self-defence from all the abuse, because "if she spoke back, she would just make it worse"

Considering how technically speaking Max should've also taken care of/ look after Kevin for Devin and then basically pretended he didn't exist, AND THEN he saw him with his grandkids and was like "oh hey buddy yeah no I was always cool with you actually- like I ain't telling you shit about how your dad died in front of me- BUT STILL no we're cool buddy", I think he would've tried to be nonchalant with Elena too

I do think Elena would've actually called his ass out immediately though

It's crazy how many people use Death of the Author to mean "separating the art from the artist" when it's actually not supposed to have anything to do with who the author is as a person and is supposed to be about the idea that the author's interpretation of their own work should not be seen as the definitive, correct opinion on that work. Like you're not supposed to invoke Death of the Author when JK Rowling devotes her entire life and fortune to transphobia, you're supposed to invoke it when Trent Reznor says Closer by Nine Inch Nails isn't a sex song.

Okay, a thing that niggles at me every time I remember it and makes me want to start throwing things-

Here's a quote from the War of the Worlds 2-parter.

And here's another one.

Would you guys like to know Ben's track record against Mike at this point in the show?

One win. In a very much group effort where really he just landed the final blow. After Gwen not only saved him, Kevin, and Magister Prior Galhil from the guy but also brought extra numbers along to help out.

Mike's first loss, meanwhile, was all on Gwen and the rest of his victims. He had Ben and Kevin dead to rights.

And the reason this bothers me is that it is exemplary of the tendency for fuckers to minimize other characters' accomplishments in favor of giving Ben all the credit. Especially poor Gwen, at the end of the day those were both her victories more than anybody's.

"Oh but Achi, Mike is a dick, of course he wouldn't give Gwen credit" See if that line was all there was that would be one thing, but

You have the other line up there. Where Kevin is giving Ben all the credit for that group win, in front of Gwen who facilitated the win in all ways, who has nothing to add.

You have Ben functionally taking credit for Mike's first defeat, a fight Ben himself lost

These were written by the same team that failed to give Gwen any sort of arc, revolved a lot of her shit around the boys, and sanded off or plastered over a lot of her rough edges or any points of interest that risked overlapping with shit from the boys

Just- These right here really, I feel, showcase an issue with the show that rubs me all sorts of wrong.
