long one ahead. discussion of ableism and disability.

i have a very strong feeling viv only added disabled characters for clout/praise. none of the disability "rep" is good or realistic imo. yes, it's hell and heaven etc etc. idc. not to mention she's ableist towards disabilities, mental or physical, she can't or doesn't want to romanticize. look at the bellhopper from ghostfuckers and the goat lady at the reception of the hospital blitz and loona went to. ableism is funny there, but when someone is mean or ableist to fizz, it's wrong?

not to mention every single disabled character gets their disability "fixed" without any issue or actual impairment of their life. it doesnt impact them or shows itself as an actual disability, just as an event that happened to them that got fixed eventually. which is fucking wild. wouldnt be surprised if she "fixed" autism or anything in that regard too in the future.

vaggie - gets her wings back for no damn reason. never mentioned or tackled how she manages with only one eye. how does she coordinate with dancing and fighting? depth perception? it seems like her getting attacked/ her eye torn out by lute was just for shock value. its literally never mentioned again.

lute - gets a perfectly working arm prosthetic. why did her arm get crushed in the first place? only for drama?

fizzarolli- perfectly working prosthetics yet again. at least its shown that he struggles with self worth and confidence with his remaining horns and 'disfigurement'. yknow, seeing that the disability had an actual impact on his life. like those in real life do.

blitz - literally had half of his face burned off, plus most of his arms/hands, and his eye on the affected side is perfectly intact, and his hands are too.

what even is the logic in all of this? (there is none surprise surprise)

i wont even get into how addicts & mentally ill ppl are treated... maybe another time.

I don’t think Vivziepop and Brandon thought much about the disability aspect besides making into a punchline/dark humor. Because Helluva Boss was supposed to be a comedy while Hazbin Hotel handles all the serious lore and drama. Now in Helluva Boss they want to be serious about their topics, creating a double edge sword.

You are right about Fizzoralli, Anon. The Mammon Special bothered me for 2 reasons: Blitz and the way Fizzarolli is babied in and outside of the show. The fans would shower Fizzarolli with praise for leaving his abusive environment and gaining weight (I’m sorry I barely see a difference regarding his weight, dude is built like a twig) but meanwhile nobody in and outside of the show keeps the same energy with Moxxie. I remember making a video all about that because that episode was so hypocritical and the double standards.

It’s not fine for Fizzoralli to be made fun but Moxxie, the goat nurse, and the bellhop can be? Like cmon. Fizzoralli got like a whole protection squad it’s not even funny.

Vaggie getting her wings was not only awkward animation wise but out nowhere and I have to question is that how all the angels get their wings back by.. dancing and jumping around while another person is singing confidently about love?

Like what is the process/requirements of getting your wings back? Looks it is not a permanent situation. I get what they were trying to do, Vaggie coming full circle similarly like a butterfly except hers was nonexistent/rushed. I’m honestly surprised nobody in the hotel asked about her eye or Vaggie has not been insecure about it.

Like Angel Dust can make fun of her tits and name but never mentions her eye. That would be great character development for both Vaggie and Angel Dust. He pushes her to edge and goes too far, in the process Angel Dust learns more about Vaggie and why she is so guarded and closed off to sinners.

Vaggie’s eye being ripped, It was definitely for shock value and show how ruthless the excorists can be especially Lute. Lute losing her arm kind of adds to drama but it’s mainly Adam dying that takes the cake. Lute is the type to use anything that happened negatively towards her as an example of why sinners are dangerous.

I’m surprised Blitz can see properly, I thought he would be blind, wear an eye patch like Vaggie, or his vision would be 10x worse than before. Blitz getting that main character plot armor. 😂 Overall, the person who truly acknowledges their disability is Fizzarolli (even if it’s brief). I would love to hear your thoughts how addicts and mentally ill characters are treated in the show, no need to apologize for rambling. I find these conversations interesting.

Oooo ok I’m actually gonna do a few of these since it sounds fun :D

Stolitz: yeahhh these two ain’t getting together or a happy ending lmao. I imagine Stolas’ deal caused Blitz an extreme amount of stress before Full Moon, and once they set up that meeting, Blitz did not need to have Stolas kick him out. He was gone and never bothered to return. If you really wanted them to get together, make Stolas’ deal be a non-sexual thing (eg. You come over once a month and hang out with me at the palace for a day as a friendly or slightly romantic type thing, and you get the grimore). Eventually both of them start having stronger feelings, maybe things could turn into a CONSENTUALLY sexual or more romantic thing, either way would work perfectly fine. Any issues the either had this way could be more easily noticed and addressed (talking things out)

Huskerdust: ueghhh number one stop acting like Husk’s situation is just as bad as Angel’s, they both are struggling with abuse but abuse of VERY different kinds, of different levels, that need different kinds of help. Also they seriously need to address Angel’s sexual harassment of Husk, it ain’t funny and Husk shouldn’t just put up with it. If that’s truly how Angel copes with his situation, then they need to talk through that and find him some more healthy coping mechanisms. Other than that obviously no loser baby (telling a sexual abuse victim they’re a whiny b*tch is, uh, not great) and no Charlie forcing Husk to go deal with Angel (instead make that a decision he made on his own, maybe just a twinge of worry nagging him until he went or something)

Fizzmodeous: CUT THE CODEPENDENCY!!! With Ozzie and Fizz’s song in the Mammon special, the message should’ve been “yes you have all these traits that Mammon loves to abuse, but YOU are the one who owns them, NOT Mammon.” Instead of what we got, which is “you’re not perfect and Mammon is awful for forcing you to be, but I love you no matter what”. Fizz just goes from being codependent on one person to another, he needs to value himself for himself and not what another person thinks of him. Ozzie also has some codependency issues, I mean he’s literally willing to casually sell his whole company without reading any paperwork just so he can get Fizz back. Make him stay calm instead, he has Stolas with him at that moment so maybe Ozzie could take out his anger on the guy with the paperwork and such (considering he’s a sin that guy is DEAD lmao), then actually talk about how they’re gonna find him and get him out, and a goetia + a deadly sin should have zero issue taking down some greed imps (Striker would be a bit of a challenge which makes for some cool rewrite ideas if he managed to kill someone). Other than that they’re pretty decent honestly

i feel like velvette is one of vivzie’s worst hazbin character designs.

her colour palette is overly red, her outfit has all the viv cliches: hearts on the bust (and everywhere else), too many god damn stripes, and some tonally clashing edgy skull earrings.

like genuinely, none of velv’s design choices scream “social media and fashion overlord.” a large reason y this happened is probably viv’s unwillingness to stray too far from her pilot design, which i admit was quite cute and shows clearly that velv’s meant to be a ragdoll.

however, i can’t grasp why vivzie decided to base velv on a ragdoll of all dolls in the 1st place, considering her role and characterisation within hazbin… why not make her more barbie or even bratz doll in essence? doll franchises known for being trendy and fashionable.

i mean the girl literally died young in the early 2000s, just make her a y2k baddie.

and even if she did die super long ago, alastor is the only overlord who really embodies the decade he was alive in so its definitely not common to do so.

oh and not to mention, shes literally part of THE VEES, whose collective brand is to be “with the times” essentially; so her look still being heavily inspired by a raggedy anne doll makes even less sense wtf.

Some design concept art!

Katie Killjoy and Tom Trench were fun! I tried to give Katie a more creepy look. The white parts on her top are her spike arms, just barely poking out. Tom I made into a roach, both because roach’s aren’t affected by radiation, and because I thought it’d be funny to make Tom a roach while Katie has a thing for killing bugs.

Sir Pentious is next! He was always described as steampunk, but I just, didn’t see it in his original design. So, I focused on that for his design. Gave him the extra straps and buckles, as well as the browns I usually associate with steampunk. I squared his face off a bit to give him more of a snake look, and gave him a little snake mustache. He’s the only hazbin character to keep his bow tie as well!

And finally, Mimzy my darling! Viv claimed she was supposed to be based on a chicken, which I didn’t like for two reasons. One, she didn’t look anything like a chicken, in fact, she’s one of the most human looking characters. And two, I thought a peacock would be more interesting! The showgirl plume really adds to her boisterous aura, and the greens really encapsulated in my head the aura of geed and envy Mimzy has.

Granted, the designs will change a bit from this, but this was a fun start for sure!

Vaggie sprite edits to get a better grasp on her as a character, as well as how to draw her.

All that really changed was that I added angelic gold to her design, as well as designing her a concept angelic look from when she was an exorcist. That includes a casual look, as I’d like to dedicate a chapter to Vaggie’s life in heaven, as well as her eventual decision to defy orders and attack Lute.

I also wanted to focus on giving her more English wings when she gets new ones. They're corrupted, just as she has been after falling. I wanted to make them vaguely moth like, so she lost a few eyes on them, and they're now a dark purple like her outfit.

This is, of course, already outdated, because I just can’t settle on a design to save my life.

Outside of the racism, I hate how Vivziepop ruined Alastor's positive relationship with Rosie. Two charismatic cannibals being best friends is a fun idea, but this was taken away for a shitty plot twist.

In season one, Alastor doesn't express discomfort around Rosie and appears to genuinely enjoy her company. If Alastor's mouth twitched and his voice became strained around Rosie, it would've shown us that there's something lurking under the surface in their relationship.

Alastor also needed to have a positive relationship with another character outside of Niffty. Rosie seemed to be the only other person he enjoyed being around. It's rare for there to be positive relationships between a man and woman in Vivziepop's shows, so Alastor and Rosie's friendship was refreshing to see. However, she couldn't resist vilifying another woman to make a man look better.

Vivziepop destroyed a positive relationship between two of her characters in an attempt to surprise her audience with a shitty twist.

Nowww, onto what I do here!

I mostly criticize the Hellaverse (Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel) along with the actions of Vivziepop, but you also may see some criticism of Psychocuties, Disney/Nintendo/other big media companies who make really freaking bad decisions (and also what media they make, especially on the Disney side of things for that one), and whatever else I feel like lol

My favorite Hellaverse characters are Stella, Beelzebub, Vortex, Striker, Octavia, Vox, and Velvette (all with a few headcanon or rewrite aspects)! I also like Lucifer and Husk with a LOT of AU rewrites lol, Luci is the definition of wasted potential and canon Husk is just not great

As for the other side of the coin, the characters I hate include Stolas and Valentino, I don’t really hate a lot of characters since everyone else is just wasted potential 😭
