Summary: Tears were streaming down his face without his control, and Buck let them. He allowed himself this moment to break like a year ago when he first realized why this day every year in his family was such a way it was. The answer is: that day is forever recorded as Daniel's birthday, but he had too little of them.

He cried and cried until the candles were about half the size, then Buck blew them out, but before doing that, he looked up and said.

“I’m sorry. I'm so sorry. You should have more time. We should have more time. I wish I could help you, big brother.”

Or, for three years Buck deals with grief of loosing Daniel alone at Daniel's birthday, and fourth time he is not alone anymore.
