When we think about washing dishes, we don’t really put much thought into the soap we’re using. After all, the soap residue left on our dishes doesn’t affect us, right? Wrong. Most conventional dishwashing liquids, soaps, and detergents aren’t just soap. They’re filled with toxic chemicals and substances that are harmful not only to your health, but the environment, too.

The not-so-funny truth about dish soap
Tumblr media
When I do the dishes I think of this task as something that protects my health. After all I am getting rid of the food residue so that I have clean dishes the next time I want to eat fresh food. But what I used to ignore is the ingredients in my conventional dish soap. When I bought dish soap in the past I never thought about looking at the ingredient list. Luckily I came across the Environmental Working Group (EWG) website that provides consumers with detailed analyses of the ingredients in different dish soap brands. And what I learned was worrisome. Here are 5 dish soaps that you might find in your grocery store and their ingredients are shocking.
1. Simple Green Naturals Dish Washing Liquid
It says green on the packaging, but the ingredients suggest otherwise. If you are looking for natural dish soap then your out of luck with this one. Simple Green Naturals Dish Washing Liquid contains two F-rated ingredients by the EWG (this is the most dangerous category): sodium borate and cocamide dea. Sodium borate is a naturally-occurring mineral, but this does not mean that it is safe to use. The high concerns that it causes are for developmental, reproductive and endocrine disruption. This means that it messes with your hormones. Cocamide dea is not much better. It is a chemically-modified form of coconut oil used as a foaming agent. And this make cocamide dea a possible carcinogen. As if this wasn’t enough bad stuff already, this soap also contains fragrance, which is an unspecified ingredient meaning it can include anything the manufacturer chooses to put into the formula without disclosing the actual ingredients. In addition to harming your health, several ingredients in this dish soap are also toxic to aquatic life, which is irresponsible for a product that goes straight down the drain. This is why this dish soap received an overall rating of F from the EWG.
2. Ajax Dish Liquid With Bleach Alternative, Lime
If you think the color in this soap is derived from actual lime then think again. The color comes from unspecified ingredients that were simply bundled up and hidden away under the term “colors”. Based on the EWG, this implies that the brand uses synthetic colors that are suspected of causing cancer. The ingredient “fragrances” is similar. Instead of telling their customers the exact ingredients used to make the scent for this product again the ingredients are bundled and hidden behind a single term. If that isn’t enough already they also include formaldehyde, methanol and a slew of other chemicals that are not only bad for your health but also for the environment. It’s only fair that this dish soap received an F from the EWG.
3. Clorox Commercial Solutions SOS Pot & Pan Detergent
To justify the use of the harsh chemicals in this dish soap you need to have a massively burned pan but even then you shouldn’t allow these ingredients anywhere near to your dishes. And that’s even though this brand does not disclose all of its ingredients. Here are some of the worst: glycol ethers, a grease-cutting compounds that can harm developmental and reproductive systems, and diethanolamine, which poses concern for cancer and kidney effects. Once again this is a brand that received a clear F from the EWG.
4. Palmolive Eco + Gel Dishwasher Detergent, Lemon Splash
When big brands, that are usually not known for being particularly green and natural, put a term like “eco” on their labels you should always be cautious and double-check such claims. That’s exactly the case with this product. It is packed with toxic chemicals like chlorine bleach and silicate salts—the label even includes this information under a warning. The product’s label also warns against letting this product come in contact with mouth, but somehow it is sill intended to be used on your dishes. Here’s another solid F from the EWG for its mixture of toxic ingredients.
5. Ajax Triple Action Dish Liquid Hand Soap, Orange
The most dangerous ingredient in this dish soap is FD&C Red 40, a synthetic color that poses extreme concern for cancer and damage to DNA. Another dangerous chemical in this product is dmdm hydantoin, a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. As if this wasn’t enough already, you will also get unknown fragrances in this soap, and other chemicals that cause respiratory and skin irritation. The EWG gave this soap an F, as you might have expected.
So what can you do if you want to get clean dishes without putting your health and the health of your family in danger? I found a brand that has developed an all-natural dish soap with nothing but the most natural ingredients that will keep you safe. Their dishwashing liquid contains only 6 ingredients and it really works. It is also biodegradable and doesn’t dry out your skin. They even donate part of their proceeds. Definitely worth it if you want to keep your family safe.
