Hi y'all! I probably won't update too much now because I've gotten over this piece of shit manga already. Though I highly suggest everyone read & -and- if you guys enjoyed Hirunaka no Ryuusei for the first half. There's a love triangle but it's well-written and doesn't drag on forever. It's a more "mature" Hirunaka no Ryuusei to say the least. Also the art is absolutely gorgeous.

In which I write a parallel between Tsubomi/Shishio and Suzume/Shishio.

This started as a sort of character analysis of Shishio, but it derailed halfway and it turned into a Tsubomi/Shishio and Suzume/Shishio parallel because I’m weak when it comes to paralles and I have no self-control.

I chose to write this because it’s important to understand Shishio as a character, to understand the reasons behind his behavior, what he does and why he does it, his flaws and good qualities and, overall, to understand his grow throughout the series. Since Shishio’s development is connected to his relationship with Suzume AND Tsubomi, I chose to make this a parallel between those three and their dynamics in order to have a better understanding of him. Having said that, this is heavily lying on the shipper part since I enjoy both Tsubomi/Shishio and Suzume/Shishio, althought I tried to focus solely on Shishio.

Before starting this, I need to clarify that you aren’t obliged to like him. I understand he’s a problematic character and you don’t have to force yourself to like him, understand him and/or “feel for him”. This is just my two cents, and you’re entitled to scroll down this because it’s not my place to tell you to feel uncomfortable or not with a fictional character.

but i think it's a good thing that suzume ended up with mamura and not shishio because the majority of shoujo girls end up with their first loves, and i think the author is giving that representation that just because he was her first love and there for her from the beginning doesn't mean he has to be the one she ends up with, because firsts aren't everything, idk it's just my opinion

Oh yeah, this used to be one of the favourite arguments in favor of Mazume - iirc some people even tweeted something like that to Yamamori? Something about the fact the manga would’ve been unoriginal if Suzume ended up with Shishio, her first love. 

But see, the problem here isn’t the endgame, it’s the execution. I would’ve been fine with a Mazume ending , had it been written decently, but it wasn’t, I disliked it immensely for reasons I already stated and will repeat if necessary. Original all you want, but the writing left a lot to be desired, and ultimately, that’s what I cared about the most.

It is rare for the heroine to end up with the second male lead, true. But it’s also rare for a shoujo manga to portray the student/teacher trope the way hnr did (or used to do);  the manga never presented Shizume as a ~forbidden and hot~ relationship, but as a problematic relationship, and it showed all the ways in which it could be toxic for both parties and Suzume especially. With that kind of writing, a Shizume ending would’ve been possible, but the second half of the manga made it clear that Yamamori wasn’t going for the ending I wanted, so I had already given up ages ago.

My ideal ending would’ve been pretty ~original too, I guess - what I really wanted was a second chance for them, a meeting later in life, and shoujo never does that, it’s an unwritten rule that you’ll end up marrying your first hs boyfriend - but well, since the manga didn’t show us a Mazume wedding, I’m free to imagine Suzume and Shishio will get another chance later.

I asked what the point of it was not what it signified. If Mamura was going to be important at the end she shouldn't have written him to look like a side character.
