Q: Is it ok if I work while in school? What’s a good amount to work?

A: Yes! In fact, time management and financial literacy are both very important skills to learn as early as possible in life. Having a part-time job can help with both. The biggest thing I can say though is not to overstretch yourself, and always put school first.

If you know you’ll be working during the semester, you can try to schedule classes around times when you’d work, or give yourself free blocks a few times a week so you would be available to work. But even if you do this, you’ll still need to give your manager (and/or whoever makes the schedule, if not them) your class schedule, and then specifically request that you are never scheduled to work during those times. If for some reason you are scheduled then, find coverage if possible, or call out and (respectfully) remind your manager of your schedule.  

Bottom line: You should not be missing class to go to work! And you should not be working more than 20 hours a week if you are a full-time (4 or more classes), and not more than 25 hrs/wk if you’re taking 3 classes.
