So I’ve been trying to wrap my little brain around Hiccup Haddock’s date of birth, bc I don’t think there’s any canon information about the year he was born beside the fact that it was a leap year. So I did some research.
Racing For The Gold canonically takes place in 1010. Now, these short video’s were published as advertisement for the 2010 Winter Olympics, so there might not be much thought behind it, but let’s just roll with it. As we know, Hiccup was 15 in HTTYD 1. In Racing For The Gold he still has both his legs, so he must be younger than he was in the first film. Not much though, since he practically looks the same.
It’s also canon that his birthday is the 29th of February of a leap year. A leap year can be devided by four. So knowing this, Hiccup couldn’t have been born in 995 AD, contrary to what many people think. The closest leap year is 996 AD, because 996:4= 249 which is not a decimal number.
That being said, if we take both Racing For The Gold and the leap year part into consideration, I think it would be pretty realistic to assume Hiccup was born in 996 AD. That would make him fourteen in Racing For The Gold, which explains the lack of pegleg, and it would mean HTTYD 1 was set in 1011 AD.
Thank you for reading my rant.
