cooking up some metaltango week sketches, but I just had to share this cute Leon before his expression inevitably changes when I clean up the lines.

@aufredpratt thank you for thinking of us and bringing it to our attention though, that was very thoughtful of you and I appreciate it 💓
Hey bio have you ever seen Nezumi VA's video essays on Ace Attorney?
I think she's really good at being fair to even the "bad" stuff. She does suffer from the "uncomfy topics=wrong"(in very few instances, like the whole turnabout bigtop case) thing but she also believes in art.
She just released an Apollo Justice video.
Speaking as Kristoph Gavin I am not currently in the headspace to receive criticism of my actions. XD
Seriously though, we do very genuinely tend to avoid video essays analyzing our kin sources because they tend to speak and present themselves as if they were authoritative, unlike engaging with meta posts where we can present our view where it differs in return.
I have a tough time listening to a documentary about why I'm a horrible person for an hour and then I can't even respond to the criticism XD

I think more people should go back and either replay or rewatch (.... or forbid, play or watch them for the first time) aa1, even if it's literally only case 1
fanon phoenix is so completely disconnected from the actual character that at this point they basically share a wacky hairstyle and a name to me. In the actual games, Phoenix is almost always depicted as the "straight man", even in comparison to Edgeworth: he's somber, dry, sarcastic, and often very tired of shenanigans and bullshit. He's a very ordinary "everyman", and that's like 80% of his appeal to me, tbh. It's not to say that he can't be silly or nonserious, but we have a unique look at the inside of his head and all the things he COULD say, but most likely does not.
He goes on to become a literal world renowned defense attorney, and so many people want to boil him down to a silly stupid little rabbit of a guy when he's anything but

The world would be a better place if the Ace Attorney lawyers (various) and sundry were allowed to actually acknowledge that being gay, bi, etc and having gay relationships was a possibility that existed.
Unfortunately they are trapped in canon hell where they cannot acknowledge or address this until you free them with your fanfiction/art.

That's not true, I have an agenda in favor of media literacy.
Like 85% of my ships are gay ships. I promise you I don't have some kind of agenda when I tell you no, the source material doesn't actually have any canonical gay people in it.

"Why does this 19th Century novel have such a boring protagonist" well, for a lot of reasons, really, but one of the big ones is that you're possibly getting the protagonist and the narrator mixed up.
A lot of 19th Century literary critics had this weird hate-boner for omniscient narrators – stories would straight up get criticised as "unrealistic" on the grounds that it was unlikely anyone could have witnessed their events in the manner described, like some sort of proto-CinemaSins bullshit – so authors who didn't want to write their stories from the first-person perspective of one of the participating characters would often go to great lengths to contrive for there to be a Dude present to witness and narrate the story's events.
It's important to understand that the Dude is the viewpoint character, but not the protagonist. His function is to witness stuff, and he only directly participates in the narrative to the extent that's necessary to explain to the satisfaction of persnickety critics why he's present and how he got there. Giving him a personality would defeat the purpose!
(Though lowbrow fiction was unlikely to encounter such criticisms, the device of the elaborately justified diegetic narrator was often present there as well, and was sometimes parodied to great effect – for example, by having the story narrated by a very unlikely party, such as a sapient insect, or by a party whose continued presence is justified in increasingly comical ways.)

I will say that none of the main characters have stated or overt relationships of any kind. The het ships are just as nonexistent as the gay ones.
Wait, that's not technically true.
Phoenix Wright canonically has an ex-girlfriend.
Is anybody in ace attorney actually gay?
No, the actual series is incredibly homophobic, and uses queer stereotypes and queer coding for humor and villains.
At one point the main character calls a flamboyant man a "fruitcake".
*Technically speaking* the game heavily implies that Lana Skye, a villain, has impure romantic feelings for another female character. And that Aura Cykes, another villain, has impure romantic feelings for another female character.
No character is ever stated outright to have romantic feelings about a character of the same sex. There are no trans characters.
Many of the characters that people headcanon as gay don't actually canonically spend a lot of time together-- though of course there is plenty of subtext you can read into their relationships.
I will say that none of the main characters have stated or overt relationships of any kind. The het ships are just as nonexistent as the gay ones.
