Today’s vibe:
That moment in recapture whump when a defiant whumpee goes from “You aren’t taking me back; I won’t let you!” to “Please don’t take me back. Please!”

the flinch that betrays a defiant whumpee’s terror
the curse that’s broken off by a plea
a small shudder that they fail to suppress
the choked breathing in between the sarcastic comments
what good is their defiance when whumper kicks their legs out from under them, leaving them on their hands and knees?
The blood on the concrete is their own and whumper kicks them when they’re down.
“Do you think I’d forgotten?” Whumper smiles and leans down. “Do you think I’d forgotten how to make you bleed?”

The Five Stages of Grief
Denial - "This can't be happening" // "I'm going to wake up any minute...it's only a nightmare..." // "None of this real, it can't be!" // "There's been a mistake!" // "They...they wouldn't leave me like this, they'll come rescue me, they will!"
Anger - "You can't do this to me!" // "Fuck you, you fucking psychopath!" // "I don't have to listen to you!" // "You're a goddamn coward!" // "Let me out of here so I can break your neck!" // "You'll be sorry when they come find me, creep!"
Bargaining - "Please, no, anything but that!" // "N-not the cattle prod, please, I'll do whatever you want!" // "No, don't hurt them! Hurt me instead, I can take it!" // "I'll let you touch me however you want just please don't use that!" // "I'll tell you whatever you want if you just let me go!"
Depression - "Do whatever you want, what's the point?" // "I don't think I have anything left to scream for you" // "Just kill me and get it over with" // "Just...just leave me alone..." // "Why are they taking so long to find me? Don't they care? Don't they love me?"
Acceptance - "I knew I deserved this..." // "I'll be good, I promise" // "I love you, too" // "They were never looking for me, were they?" // "Yes, sir/ma'am" // "What do you mean 'leave'? I can't leave, that's against the rules"

we all love our gagged whumpees, but the way im automatically won over is when the tiny process of whumpee being gagged is described in very careful detail.
pushing the tangled hair out of their face so you can slide the straps under it. maybe it's coated with sweat.
if whumpee is defiant, i love seeing how they toss their head back and how you have to force their mouth open. maybe they bite a few times? very annoying for whumper. but shoving their head back towards you, gripping onto their hair and telling them to cut that shit out...ooh, that's fun.
obedient whumpees are just as fun because they'll just open up for whumper. stick that pretty tongue out and remain still as you clip it behind their head. maybe you can even stroke their hair a little. throw in a 'good boy/girl' for good measure 🙏🙏🙏
then theres the look!! i wanna know what they eyes are doing!! are they glaring straight ahead to avoid looking at whumper, or shooting daggers at them anyway? do they stare at the ground? or is it all listless if they've done this many times before?
and when you're done... i wanna know the result. what kind of gag is it (personally im a sucker for open-mouth) and how does it make em look? are they drooling already? what does whumper have to say about this?
i dont care how unnecessarily long you think you made your gagging scene, we're whump writers we're all here to indulge!! give your whumpee's mouths some love 🫶🫶

"Caretaker, I'm f-fine. It's only a little cut. I can..." Whumpee wobbled, losing their grip on the wall they were leaning on. "... I can fix it myself."
Caretaker was already opening the medical kit, rummaging around for some scissors to cut through Whumpee's shirt. "No, you're not 'fine!' You're covered in blood! Now sit down, or I'll make you."
"I never said it was... All my blood..." Whumpee mumbled, as they slid down the wall into a sitting position on the floor.
Caretaker knelt in front of them, peeling back the sticky, reddened fabric to expose the wound on Whumpee's chest. Their jaw tensed. Somehow, it was even worse than they thought. They'd be lucky if it wasn't already infected. How long had Whumpee been hiding the damn thing?
"It's not that bad, I pro---mmph!" Whumpee's eyes widened as Caretaker stuffed a roll of gauze into their mouth.
Caretaker shot Whumpee a pointed glare and set to work trying to stem the bleeding. "Shut it. I don't want another word out of you unless it's an explanation."

There’s something about the moment when the up-till-then defiant protagonist—now bound, gagged, and defeated—accepts their fate.
The antagonist stands over them, crowing gleefully over their victory. Hissing lies or taunts into their ear. Reminding them of how woefully they’ve failed.
There’s something about the moment you see the shift in the protagonist’s eyes.
The moment their head dips, hangs low.
Defeated.

Caretaker picks whumpee up and places them gently in the car. "We need to get you to a hospital." They say hastily.
"No, no I'm okay." Whumpee speaks behind gritted teeth. They're holding their wound and tensing with each pulse of pain, they're somehow willing themselves to not grunt or cry out.
"I wasn't asking, you need to get checked out. Lean back a bit, just lie still." Caretaker puts their seat back and starts the engine, ignoring whumpee's pleads and arguing.
The car ride was tense and quiet, until whumpee breaks the silence with crying.

A Defiant, Proud Whumpee
A proud whumpee that is broken slowly. They give just a little the further along things get, until they're completely obediant.
(They slump onto their knees, exhausted, glaring up at Whumper. Just this once, they tell themself. Just until they can sleep again.)
Or a defiant whumpee who is broken suddenly. Maybe they'd been fighting for years, but Whumper finally found the one thing they can't take.
(No, no, no- they watch as Whumper prepares to give the signal. I can't let them die. "Stop! Please! I'll listen, I'll do anything!" They sob, tears falling free infront of their captor for the first time.)

Oh Oh Oh! You know what I wanna see?
Suicidal Whumpees
(This has nothing to do with my own issues shut up)
Particularly, a Defiant Suicidal Whumpee
A Whumpee who gets captured, who gets beaten black and blue, tortured with everything Whumper can throw at them, but still spits in their face at the end of the session
A Whumpee who taunts and mocks their captors at every turn, regardless of how much worse it makes things for themself
A Whumpee who acts as the biggest thorn in Whumper’s side because they won’t back down, they won’t submit, they won’t just give up like Whumper wants
A Whumpee who does all of this because they don’t care, who, when threatened with death, looks Whumper dead in the eye and says “bring it”, who’ll get the barrel of a gun pointed at their head and just lean forwards and tell Whumper to pull the trigger with a smile on their face
A Whumpee who takes everything Whumper does to hurt them and still throws insults back at them, because deep down they’re hoping if they piss Whumper off enough, if they push them too far, Whumper might actually kill them and it will all end
A Defiant Whumpee who spits in Whumper’s face and prays that this time it’ll finally be the straw the broke the camels back and they’ll be free

Whumper overestimates how much torture Whumpee can take. The once-defiant Whumpee is broken and catatonic, not speaking or reacting to anything anymore. And Whumper isn't happy about it. Though they loathe to admit it, they liked Whumpee's defiance. It was entertaining. Whumpee was entertaining. With them not speaking anymore, Whumper realizes that they miss the sound of Whumpee's voice. The snarky little comments, the sarcastic jokes, the curses screamed in rage.
Now Whumper is desperate to get the old Whumpee back. They're being extra "nice," giving Whumpee medical treatment and food, anything to make them go back to how they were before. Anything to fix their favorite toy.
Because like it or not, Whumper doesn't have anyone else.

hey you, a defiant whumpee can cry. I know you don’t want your writing to be out of character for them and you’re worried that having them cry or break down might be out of character, but believe me, it’s not out of character for someone who’s been pushed beyond their limits to eventually break down. I know they’re supposed to be prideful and defiant, but thing is: eventually we all have a breaking point.
actually, having your defiant whumpee break down when they can no longer take it does make your work a dozen times more angsty and realistic. because yeah, no matter how strong or invincible someone is, they can only take so much before it becomes too much.
so yes, you can have your readers at the edge of their seats by spicing up your chapter this way. character A, who had never showed a hint of emotion, curling up into a ball on the floor and crying after they can no longer take the pain? OH MY GOD I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. YOU GOT ME HOOKED AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Whumper, ripping off the last page of their calendar and tossing it to Whumpee's feet: That's another year, darling. And not a single person has found you. Give up, because your friends already did.

i’m a huge fan of scenarios where a powerful whumper orders a defiant whumpee to be “taken out back.” Like when guards literally haul a kicking and biting whumpee behind the building and just go to town on them with a crowbar or even their bare fists. Maybe it’s raining outside too and whumpee is being beaten into the mud. Then the guards drag the whumpee, bleeding from the mouth and covered in dirt and something theyd rather leave unnamed, and unceremoniously drop them before whumper again. If whumpee is still defiant, they’re dragged back outside to begin the process all over again.

whump fic where whumpee is being held captive by whumper and continually tries to escape to find where caretaker is being held so they can get out of here together, but as the story progresses it becomes more clear that whumpee is a victim of stockholm syndrome/brainwashing by "caretaker" and is actually being rehabilitated by "whumper" after being rescued, not kidnapped

A defiant whumpee, thrashing around, grunting, fighting as much as his body allows, kicking, punching, biting, crying, screaming, spitting. Whumper removing every bit of freedom with chains, ropes, gag/muzzle, blindfold, and putting whumpee in a severe stress position until he realizes there's only two options; to surrender or pass out and do it again until whumper gets exactly what he wants, whumpee's complete surrender.
