One thing I see resurfaced around dog therian circles quite frequently is those who question dogs, but then deem that they “probably aren’t a dog” or simply “could never be a dog” because of them not being “wild” or not acting more “animalistic” then wild canid’s. Which like, I get where this take comes from. If you surround yourselves with a certain group of animals (including humans) you will apply those characteristics of said group to anything else. People, for example, like to apply the characteristics of wolves onto dogs, which leads to said individuals feeling a discontent feeling with dogs.

If you are questioning dogs as a possible theriotype, or as any other aspect of your identity, I’d recommend going in directly with the most open mind ever. Dog’s are a (mostly, saying mostly bc theres some niche’s like Dingos and whatnot) domestic group - meaning a whole ton of variety. You can’t say you’re not a dog because you don’t like playing fetch and don’t feel the need for an owner, when theres Strays & Livestock Guardians (mostly away from their owner). You can’t say you’re not a dog because you don’t feel the need to hunt for a human, but rather for yourself, when theres hunting dogs that get to share the game they’ve hunted with their owners, and when theres hunting dogs that hunt pests - which their owners will process specifically for their DOG to eat, not them.

Just keep remembering how diverse dogs are. Dogs aren’t black & white, there aren’t the “cute Golden Retrievers” and the “scary protective German Shepherds”. Dogs are beyond versatile animals, meaning: Yes. You can be a personal protection dog, a property guarding dog, and a pest-controlling dog all in one. Yes, you can be an agility dog that also likes chilling around the house. What do you think Bandogges were made for? Those hunting dogs down south? Those european Spitz’s? Theres so . much . variety!!! Don’t limit yourself!

rambles ahead

i’m sitting in my government class with a teacher-chosen groups with some of the ‘popular’ kids. the rowdy kind that party every weekend. they’re nice kids. listening into their conversation, i really feel my nonhuman side bubble over. i feel like a dog sitting at their ankles looking at whoever is talking, not interacting but absorbing. sometimes i bark out a reply but it’s usually ignored. part of me, of course the human side, is bummed that i’m ignored (though not really, we aren’t friends i don’t expect them to), but the dog side of me loves it. my tail wags thinking about how i’m just a coydog sitting at their feet and listening. looking at them with my big brown eyes 👁️👁️

this blog is mainly about species euphoria, it can come off as a vent or rant about being ignored but that’s not the reason behind posting.
