it was now 4am, and most of the people had left eren’s house. eren had let his close friends (and his “girl”) stay the night and since you and genesis were kade’s family, he considered you two close friends. although he was a whore, he was sweet. you and genesis were sleeping in one of the many guest rooms in the large house. you had gotten hungry, so you woke up and quietly made your way into the kitchen.

you opened eren’s gigantic pantry door and scanned the items that were in there. you were debating on what to take from the shelves. earlier, eren had told you to take whatever you wanted, so you didn’t feel guilty taking — practically stealing — his snacks. he was also rich as fuck. he could probably buy tons more of whatever you took.

“boo.” you heard from behind and you jumped, followed by a deep laugh. “what the fuck!” you quietly shouted. you turned to meet the pretty face of the freshman wide receiver, jean. he was laughing at you. you rolled your eyes and hit his shoulder. “ain’t shit funny, you bitch.” you turned back towards the pantry and took a party sized chip bag.

“my bad.” he said, still giggling while you hoisted yourself onto one of the kitchen counters. you blankly stared at him, opening the bag and placing one in your mouth. “why are you up anyway?” he asked, opening the fridge and getting a blue gatorade.

“i was hungry. you?” you replied, pointing the bag to his direction and offering it to him. he took some before he leaned onto the kitchen island, right in front of you. “connie and kade were snoring really fucking loud.” you giggled. “not gonna lie, i would’ve suffocated them.”

he laughed, once again. “i was deadass gonna do it, but i really want that natty.” he said. “maybe i’ll suffocate them after we get it.” you snorted. “after you get it? damn, you’re cocky.”

More than most, Max knew that self-awareness did not prevent stupidity. Reeling from the disastrous nature of last night's dinner, they'd come to the salon on one of Jade’s working days as a last ditch attempt. The end of the month was fast approaching and their goal of facing the Fengs seemed near unreachable. In hindsight, it was foolish to provide such a locked timeframe. When they were together, Jade had once drunkenly revealed that her fountain of gossip occasionally dipped below the surface and Max being Max had never forgotten.   Last night had caused Max to wonder if the universe was fucking with them. San Myshuno was small but now it felt oppressive. A friendship with Lena seemed childish and ill-conceived, but with Max’s recent luck it was inevitable. They had acknowledged this in the early hours of this morning, alone in bed and unable to sleep. Thankfully, Rose had gone back to her place last night, having a family thing later today. She’d been remarkably understanding about everything, which secretly pissed Max off. If the tables were turned, Max would have started an argument in the uber home and would have continued it all the way to their front door. Not because they had particularly deep feelings for Rose, but on the principle that they simply hate to feel embarrassed.

There was one thing that you could count on. The bars of Wabang were loud, crowded and full of people who paid no mind to what was going on around them. Which is why no one says a damn word when you sat at the bar, beer bottle slick with condensation in front of you, rubbing at your eyes with the heels of your hand willing yourself not to cry. It had been a red-letter week, the car broke down and it would take scrimping from the next three paychecks to pay for repairs, and that’s if you can convince one of your coworkers to give you a lift to and from.

There was nothing that could make this week worse.

“Hey baby.” There’s a grunt as someone sits on the barstool next to you.

“Terry, tonight is not the night.” You lift your head from your hands, glaring at your ex-boyfriend. Though, calling him your boyfriend was generous. It wasn’t much more than a few crappy dates, most of the time spent fumbling with each other in the bedroom.

“I mean, I could help. You just got to talk to me baby.” His fingers travel up your arm, circling your elbow. “Come on, let’s get out of here. I’ll help you forget all your worries.”

“For all of thirty seconds while you jack-rabbit between my legs, come and roll over and go to sleep?”

“Oh, come on now baby, there’s no need to get nasty outside the bedroom.”

“Terry, you couldn’t get nasty in the bedroom, I’m shocked you can identify it.”

“You know what,” His hand tightens on your elbow. “I’ve got half a mind—”

“That’s the first smart thing you’ve said all night.” A second masculine voice says. Smooth, quiet, a voice you know very well. “Come on. The lady’s not interested. Move on.”

“You know what Abbott. I’m tired of you walking around like you’re something important just because you can last 8 seconds on a bull. You can’t last that long on a woman.”

“Terry!” You slide off the stool, putting yourself between him and Rhett. A stupid move, but you know Rhett wouldn’t hurt you, and you can handle anything Terry managed to deal. “Too far.” You break the hold on your arm. “You need to go.”

“We ain’t done here,” He snatches at you, fingers iron tight. Terry yanks you toward him, causing you to stumble. You slam into the bar, feeling the edge of it bite into your torso, knowing you’ll have a bruise later.  

There’s a heavy crack of skin on skin, a grunt and the sound of someone hitting the floor. The rest of the bar notices what’s going on, as chaos breaks out all around you. Rhett is rubbing his hand, Terry’s laid out on the floor, not moving, on his back.

“Come on,” Rhett says quickly, offering you his hand. You take it, and he tugs you through the crowd, leaving a few crumpled bills on the bar. The night air is cool and crisp, the sky pitch black, stars stretching out endlessly above you. You find yourself pinned against the passenger door of his truck as he fumbles with the keys. Laughter bubbling up in your throat, wild and an alternative to the tears and frustration you feel just under the surface. Rhett helps you into the truck, racing around the front to get in behind the wheel.

Tires squeal as he peels out of the parking lot, struggling one handed with his seatbelt as he gets onto the main road. “I can’t believe you did that!”

“I don’t much care for how he treated you. He has no right to speak to you that way.” Rhett glances sidelong at you. “Told you that before,” his voice is a little softer. He drives for a while, heading out of town, landscape being taken over by dark pastures and fields.

“Thanks,” you lick your lips, staring out the window. You can’t bring yourself to look at him. After a week of bad things piling up, you were in the cab of Rhett’s truck. With a thousand ‘almosts’ filling the space between you. The two of you had always been a little too close, too friendly. Inside jokes, quiet glances. You’d watch him ride; he’d drop by the famer’s market to keep you company while you sold produce. Hands brushing together, easy enough to be passed off as accidental. The way his hand tightened on your hip while he spun you around the dance floor.

The way you could sit in absolute silence with him, not saying a word—and have it be the best conversation in the world.

You almost had him, but he was taken. Almost ended up cozied up together at a bonfire, but you were enamored with someone else.

Almost hurt worse than being alone.

Which is why the string of shitty boyfriends, terrible one-night stands, and occasional rodeo boy that came through Amelia County. All because of a lanky, sweet man who stood at your side as a friend, and an almost.

You’re jolted from your thoughts when Rhett turns the ignition off. He’s parked at a diner, and he tips his head with a grin. “Let’s get some coffee, and you tell me everything that’s going on in that head of yours.” He’s opened your door, offered his hand to steady you as you hop out of his truck. Rhett keeps a hold of it as you walk to the diner, a calloused thumb smoothing over the back of your hand.

A corner booth, his knees knocking against yours as you huddle around the small, slightly sticky table. Two cups of coffee and a massive slab of apple pie with two forks sit between you. He’s letting you talk, his hands wrapped around the worn mug, listening with a slight upturn to his lips.

Everything comes out. The car problems, the work problems, that it hadn’t rained nearly enough this year and things were already looking lean. Each little drop in the bucket of bad bubbles up. “And then Max ate my slippers.” You stab at a slice of apple with your fork. “My brand-new slippers. He knows better than that. I came home and he brought me the sole of one of them like it was a present.”

Rhett laughs, really laughs. You can’t help but smile at the quiet sound. His eyes crinkle and there’s an unrestrained joy to it—happy is a good look for him, and not one that you get to see often. It’s something that you want to see on him all the time.

“Thanks,” there’s a lump in your throat. “For looking out for me.”

He passes you a handful of scratchy thin napkins when you sniffle, wiping at your eyes. “S’alright darlin’. Just let it out.” Rhett leans closer, his fingertips so gentle as they tip your chin up. “I’m just a phone call away. I know it’s hard to pick up the phone, but it’s not good to let it fester.” That same thumb brushes over your cheek delicate and soft.

“I’ll take a look at the car, if I can’t fix it, I’ll work something out with Jenkins alright?”

You nod mutely, wiping your nose. “Sorry.”

“Darlin’ you’ve picked me up outta worse.” He says, “Now finish that pie, and I’ll take you home.” He picks up his coffee again. “You need some rest.” He won’t let you pay, but you leave a tip on the table. The drive back to your place is nice. Rhett is humming along with a song on the radio, and the night air is so cool and clear. You sing along, letting the wind bounce your hand back and forth when you stick it out the window.

Rhett follows you up the porch stairs, a warm presence at your back as you unlock your front door.

“You want to come in?” You ask, looking up at him. The porchlight casts harsh shadows on his face, and yet he’s still one of the most handsome men you’ve ever seen.

He smiles softly, tipping his hat up. “Not tonight darlin’.” He kisses your forehead, drawing you closer, an arm around your waist. “Don’t get me wrong, I want to, lord I want to.” Rhett’s words brush against your skin, his lips pressing them softly to your cheekbones. There’s a slight scrape of his stubble when he nuzzles against your jaw. “But you’ve got so much on your mind, darlin’. And when I have you for the first time, I want all of you.”

Rhett’s mouth eases over yours, kissing you softly. He’s sweet and gentle, backing you against the doorframe. One hand light on your waist, the other braced above you, pinning you. “Go on inside, sweetheart. Get some rest.”

He pauses, “for me?”

“For you.” You whisper. You can feel the warmth from his kiss coursing through you.

“You work tomorrow?” When you shake your head, he continues. “I’ll come over look at the car after I feed the horses. I only accept food and kisses in exchange for mechanical work.” He winks at you. “Go on now.”

You open the door, stepping into the house, still buzzing with the effects of Rhett’s touch. The door closed solidly behind you, you lean against it, trying to control your racing heart. It’s not until you lock it, that Rhett’s heavy footsteps go down the stairs and his truck roars to life.

Not that he didn't do it periodically.

He did it before every show you had, your birthday, your anniversary, and simply because he wanted to.

He was currently finishing up his festival run while you were in New York attending an event. It was rare that the two of you didn't attend events together, but this time Jack's schedule just wasn't allowing it.

He was currently in New Jersey, so not too far away from you but still missing you nonetheless.

Jack didn't even know how to respond to the text and he was getting heated trying to think of who would be so bold to send you flowers knowing that Jack would be ready to kick their asses.

“Who the fuck does he think he is to do this shit? He didn’t learn from the time before when I cussed his ass out?”

“Apparently not.”

“Now if I would have known that he was going to be there, I would have definitely went… matter of fact. We’re going now.”

“Wait, what?”

“We’re going back to the hotel to get ready and then we’re going. I did get an invite, so we’re doing this.”

“Okay, we get there and then what?! You just about to beat his ass?”

“If it comes to that, yes. My wife is off limits and I’m tired of people acting as if I haven’t said that a million times over. He has always been disrespectful towards her and I’m ending this shit tonight.”

“Hold on, let’s think about this.” 2fo said while trying to be the voice of reason.

“What is there to think about? I don’t want my wife near him so let’s go. Urb, I get that you two aren’t really seeing eye to eye right now, however….”

“I’m going because I don’t like him either and none of us want him near her, might be upset with her, but I’m going to protect her regardless.”

“Shit, say less.”

Just then Neelam walked over to see why Jack was so upset and how everyone was trying to calm him down.

Jack explained the situation and Neelam shook her head in disbelief.

“You literally need to be on a plane in the next four hours. Y/N is a grown woman who can handle herself, she isn’t some damsel in distress. Give her more credit.”

“Y/N is a little slow at times. She doesn’t really know when people are flirting with her sometimes, hint hint, Miami.”

“Look, just don’t do anything that is going to make my job harder.”

“Well tell goofy giveon and trashnitta to stop stressing our favorite couple out.”

“Neelam, we need suits.”

“Let me call Luna and see what she can do.”

Within an hour and a half, Jack and PG were now pulling up to the event that was already underway and made their way inside. He spotted you near the bar with Danielle sipping on your drinks and laughing when he looked over to the left and saw Giveon making his way over to approach you.

“Uh Jack?”

“Just wait a minute. I’ll let him get to her first before I go over there.”

“Shit, this is about to be a fucking mess. Can we just make sure we don’t get kicked out? I highly doubt that we’ll get an invite next year.” Quiiso said while watching Giveon approach you.

“Stop stalling Jack. Got damn, go get her!”

“Kick his ass!”

“NO, DO NOT DO THAT WITH ALL THESE WHITE PEOPLE IN HERE!”

“Jack is white the last time I checked!”

“But we’re not and you know how society looks at us! Of course if he starts fighting, we have to jump in!”

“Unless Y/N slaps Giveon first.”

“I doubt it because Jack won’t even let it get to that point.”

Jack then walked over to where you were and since you were facing away from him, he wrapped an arm around your waist just as Giveon had approached you.

You turned around startled to see your husband and then looked behind him to see PG who simply waved at you.

“Baby?! What are you doing here?” You asked while he leaned down to kiss you.

“I just thought I’d make an appearance since I had a little bit of time. Hey Dani. What’s going on here?”

“Hey, not much, Giveon was just about to mention his new tour is about to start.”

“Oh, didn’t even see you there. But, let me ask one question.”

“Oh, shit.” Danielle muttered underneath her breath and you were starting to get a little nervous and glanced back at PG with wide eyes.

PG had now moved closer and they were all literally behind you watching the scene unfold and ready to intercede if they were needed ever since you had given them that look.

“And what’s that?” Giveon asked and it didn’t even look like he was nervous, he was shorter than Jack and had to look up at him but wasn’t backing down.

“Do you like going after married women? Because I thought I made myself loud and clear the last time for you to stay away from my wife.”

“Oh damn, it’s happening.” Shloob said while he decided to order a drink to calm his nerves.

“I’m literally just making small talk, no harm in that.”

“Baby…” You said trying to interrupt, but Jack simply shook his head at you and you knew there was no talking him back off this cliff. You looked over at your big sister in a panic and all she did was shake her head. 

“But, there is especially when you are constantly disrespectful towards her and I don’t like that shit. You made your way over here knowing good and damn well you shouldn’t have.”

“So your wife can’t have friends?”

“Her friends are behind her right now and will kick your ass if you so much as glance her way one more time for the night. I’m being nice because I will kick your ass right now. Remove yourself from our presence immediately.”

Giveon just gave a small smirk and shook his head.

“So, Y/N, this is who you married?”

“NAH HOLD THE FUCK UP.” Shloob, 2fo, Ace, Nemo, and Quiiso were now all standing up wanting for him to continue.

“Don’t fucking speak to her and right now Jack is being nice enough to let you walk away. We don’t play about our girl.”

“His pretty boy ass is not about to do shit.”

“Who the fuck…” Jack started to say, but you immediately cut him off. 

“Hold on now,” You stated while getting up from your seat as you were holding Jack back for dear life while PG was just about to let him go as Danielle was sipping on her drink just watching.

“Yes this is who I married and you need to respect that. I have never been disrespectful towards you and you said that his pretty boy ass isn’t about to do shit? Keep that same energy once we’re not in here with all of these cameras. You have come for my husband for the first and the last time. Walk away if you know what’s good for you because right now I’m holding him back. If I let him go, your ass is grass and because of your reputation, no one in here is about to stop him from knocking you into the next century.”

“Alright then, I’ll go. But one last question. How did you like the flowers I sent?”

“You…”

“Baby, don’t.” You said while cutting Jack off as Giveon walked away smirking. 

Once he was out of earshot, you then turned to your husband who clearly had a pissed off look on his face.

“Pookie, just calm down for a second. Please. I know he gets under your skin. Don’t act up with all these white people in here, then they’ll be like well you know he got a black wife and that’s where he gets it from.” You said while trying to make him laugh and you succeeded.

“We said something similar earlier!” Ace mentioned as he leaned in to give you a hug.

“I just… I love yall so much and thank you for that. We were getting a little uncomfortable until yall showed up.”

“He got some nerve sending those damn flowers to your hotel room.”

“And you know it didn’t click that it wasn’t from you until after I had posted it. I was like wait a minute…. He didn’t sign it like he usually does.”

“Let me catch his ass outside.”

“BABY!”

“Look, I have no reason to lie to you about what I would do if I did.”

“I know, but sidenote, my baby looks so damn good.” You said while reaching up to kiss him. 

“Here they fucking go.” 2fo said and rolled his eyes.

“I could say the same about you. That damn dress doesn’t leave a lot to the imagination and I think a lesson is in order that needs to be taught.”

“EW!” Dani said and rolled her eyes before making a gagging sound.

“You want a niece or a nephew don’t you? So cut the shit.”

“Yall still nasty regardless.”

“Anyway, I think I got my point across, but we’ll see. Next time I won’t be so nice.”

“You call that nice?”

“To my standards, yes.”
