"It Could Work Out After All." AU

✩CHAPTER 1✩

This is like a "holiday special type of story"

This is an AU so some of the things in this story may seem a bit OOC with some of the characters in the story. This is my first time writing stuff like this! It was very fun and basically this is like a BIG FLUFF FILLED STORY!! Some angst parts may happen but idk yet sooo yeah.. this is CHAPTER ONE!! maybe another chapter hopefully before 2025. Took me two days to write and plan soo.. woohoo!! (Would this count as my first "non-g/t" story? Bella in this is small and this kinda is a origin story.) alright no more yapping, let's BEGIN!!

(WARNING: This is a PLATONIC AU and story! Do not ship or make something inappropriate out of this AU or any of my work. Enjoy!)

-Chapter 1: The Beginning-

"I love you, Bella. I'll be back soon."

That was the last words Bella's mother said before she exited the alleyway where Bella dropped her in a box with only a blanket to keep her warm.

Bella was only 2 months old when that happened, she remembers that it was midnight, cold, and it was raining.

Bella was now five months old, three months had past. She's still in the same position now, in the same small box. She wore a dirty shirt and some shorts. Her shoes were filthy as well as being untied. She also had white gloves on, fingerless ones to be exact. She found them on the floor a week ago and she decided to just keep and wear them for herself.

Bella climbed out her box, she walked around on all fours since she didn't know how to stand up straight yet, neither was she taught how to.

She walked down a couple blocks, bumping into some people along the way by accident. It was getting close to winter time, meaning the start of the holiday season and tons of people going to shot for gifts, visit their families, and celebrate.

Everyone.. except for Bella. Bella didn't really have much of a family to go home to, neither did she even have a home. She frowned at the thought before her eyes caught something bright. It was a pizza restaurant by the looks of it, though she couldn't read the signs or what it said yet, she knew by the smell. And that smell was amazing.

She trotted over to the window before looking inside. She saw mobians in uniforms and walking around with boxes filled with pizza. Bella smiled, but then she heard the front door open. Two people came walking out and Bella took this as a opportunity to sneak in. She zipped through the gap between the front door and successfully made it inside.

She ducked under a table with nobody sitting at it. She kinda felt that this was a bad idea, but she was hungry and needed to eat at least something.

She saw the front door open again, seeing two mobians walking in and booking a table. And that table was the same one that Bella was under.

She gulped, curling up as they sat down. Her small body was able to blend in with the shadows as she gazed around her surroundings.

A waiter came over to take their orders before walking away. A couple minutes later they came back with fresh hot pepperoni pizza. The two guests said they'd be using the restroom.

This was the perfect time to snag a slice.

Bella's tail wagged at the thought, then she put that plan in action.

She scrambled up the seat, grinning at the thought of biting into a slice of that cheesy pizza.

She got up on to the table before grabbing a slice that was practically almost her size. She was about to take a bite before she heard someone yell.

"WHO ARE YOU?! WHY ARE YOU IN MY RESTAURANT?!"

She turned her head to the voice before she jumped when she saw a weasal mobian walking up to her. He had on a chef's hat and the fur on his muzzle curled into a mustache.

"You.. YOU MUTT! YOU PESKY LITTLE RAT!" he yelled.

Bella let out a silent gasp before he grabbed her by the back of her shirt tightly.

The two other mobians were also standing in the sidelines, watching the scene unfold in shock.

Before Bella could even think, she was was thrown out onto the streets.

She fell hard, but the people walking by didn't even react to the scene. She whimpered slightly before the manager slammed the door, making it clear she was not welcome back in anymore.

Bella's stomach grumbled, she weakly got back into her crawling position before she scurried back into the alleyway.

But she didn't notice that someone saw the whole thing.

Shadow was walking down the street. He never really celebrated the holidays since he never seemed that interested much. He decided to try it this year, and also because Sonic was throwing a Christmas party and everyone was invited, including him.

The blue hedgehog had been pestering him multiple times, telling him to come and that it'll be fun. He sighed at the thought, knowing if he didn't come this'll probably add to the list of things Sonic would tease him about.

He put his hands in his coat's pockets, looking up at the sky. He was about to walk past a pizza restaurant before he saw something.. peculiar when he looked through the front window. A little mobian puppy, maybe the size of his hand, was on the table about to dig into a pizza that wasn't even hers.

Shadow chuckled faintly at the sight, thinking she might even be a stray by the looks of it. Then he saw the manager pick her up pretty harshly, he saw him coming to the door, making him back up a bit before it flew open and seeing the puppy fly and fall roughly onto the floor before she scampered into a alleyway not too far up ahead.

After the manager slammed the door somehow Shadow felt a twinge of anger.

Shadow knew she probably was hurt a bit and maybe even starving. He entered the restaurant, going up to an employee before making an order.

After he received and paid for the pizza he walked over to the alleyway. He ordered a small pepperoni pizza which was placed into a take-out pizza box.

He turned the corner before seeing a small box, it was closed but he could hear slightly whimpering.

He frowned, kneeling down before opening the box. His eyes widened when he saw her shivering in the cold and that blanket didn't seem to do much since the fabric it was made out of probably was old and there was tons of holes that could easily allow cold air inside.

"Hey.." Shadow said in a low voice, which cause the puppy to yip in suprise. She backed away which made Shadow feel somewhat bad for her in a way. "It's alright, I won't hurt you. You must be hungry, huh? I've got something for you." he assured as he took the pizza box out the bag before opening it. "Here. Have this." he took the pizza into his gloved hand before handing it to her.

The puppy looked in amazement and in shock as she took the pizza. She bit into it and he could see her begin to melt from how good it was. He took off the scarf he was wearing before he began to reach over to her to wrap it around her.

The puppy flinched slightly, but relaxed a bit. Shadow smiled slightly, wrapping it gently around her. "There." he said when he was done.

Then he saw her smile, and he'd be lying if he said that wasn't adorable. He stood back up before throwing the bag and pizza box into the trash. He walked back over to the box. He kneeled down, reaching his hand over and began to pet her gently on the head. Her tail wagged as she leaned into his touch which made Shadow feel even worse to just leave here. He knew he wouldn't be the most fit person to keep another mobian with him, especially with how he's mostly on missions and he didn't want her to get hurt while he's gone. He just felt like it wouldn't work out.

"Alright, well, I'll be going. Stay safe, kid." he said as he got up again and walked away.

Bella watched as the hedgehog walked away, her tail stopped wagging when she saw him get farther and farther.

She then proceeded to wrap the scarf around her neck some sort of 'cape' way. Then, she climbed out her box and ran to follow him.

She weaved through the crowds, feeling the cold breeze on her face made her feel like she was flying through the air. She just didn't want to be left alone again. She wanted a family, she didn't care if it was one person. At least it's someone.

She saw him, and when she was close enough, she slowed down. She wondered if he'd allow her to be with him. Even if not, even if he wouldn't allow it, at least she tried. Bella snuck behind him, being extra quiet as she hid behind many places just so she wouldn't get caught too soon.

Then, while she was walking behind him, she heard him say something that made her stop. "I know you're following me. Go back, I can't take care of you."

Bella froze, seeing him look back. But, she saw something in his expression that meant he didn't fully mean that. He seemed like he did, he seemed afraid about something. Bella frowned before she barked. She was determined, she wanted to try. The hedgehog paused, knowing that look that he saw was all too familiar. His frown turning into a slight smirk. "So stubborn, you remind of someone I know. Alright, come on." he said.

Bella smiled, her tail wagged. She barked happily, running small circles around Shadow as he began to chuckle softly. "What did I get myself into?" he asked himself as they made their way to his house.

After Shadow cleaned her up, washed her clothes, and had her put them back on, she seemed much more comfortable. She now was sitting on the couch, her tail wagging as her eyes flickered to every corner of the room.

He knew she'd be a lot to take care of, but maybe it could work out after all. It was only about a month until the holidays.

What could go wrong?

A/N:Seems Shadow adopted a puppy!! THIS IS THE END OF CHAPTER 1!! Wrote this and finished at midnight soo I'm tired! Anyway, hope you enjoyed and see ya in the next chapter

This is Beak (yes a very simple name, idk-)

She's a Starling (a certain species of bird).

Other info... well I wanted her to have one eyelash (since I think that means she's a younger character which she is.) so she has two since the picrew only has two lashes.

(Edit: i also wanted her to be baby blue, but apparently this is the only blue I can use sooo.. uuhh.)

Since the picrew also doesn't have clothing options, this is what she'd wear:

Uhh, currently working on a backstory for both Bella and Beak and some more info on Beak. But for now, this is all!
