Breaking News – Spa to Set Sail in VI’s Waters

ST. THOMAS — from Daily News Imagine relaxing on a 40-foot catamaran, soaking up the sun in the gentle breeze, while enjoying a soothing therapeutic massage. That’s the concept at the new ZunZún Sailing Yacht and Floating Massage Spa, the first and only floating spa in the Caribbean.

Opened this past weekend, ZunZún is a 40-foot long, 23.5-foot wide 2014 Lagoon catamaran with all the amenities, including two heads and a full galley. The vessel is equipped to offer a full complement of professional body work, including several types of massage, reflexology, body wraps and scrubs made with local ingredients, mini facials and an ionized foot bath that changes colors as toxins are released through the feet.

Not only is ZunZún the first of its kind in the Caribbean, it may be unique worldwide.

“I’ve been looking all over the Internet and I can’t find a single boat dedicated to the concept in the whole world,” said Rich Sadler, who owns the operation with partner Jill Scott.

Sadler and Scott are no strangers to either boating or the massage spa industry. Scott owned a successful spa in New Jersey serving celebrities and professional athletes before relocating to the U. S. Virgin Islands and spent seven years as the pain specialist in the spa at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas. Sadler, a marketing strategist, business adviser and broker from Ocala, Fla., met Scott 16 years ago in Cancun. Together, they conduct emergence-style health retreats in exotic locations such as Costa Rica. They also own A Touch of Wellness Spa in Compass Point, St. Thomas.

Both have owned boats in the past, and between them, they have “been in the marine world in one way or another for five decades.” They own and operate the well-established Jester Sailing Adventures, offering full-day, half-day and sunset sails as well as wedding cruises. With ZunZún, Sadler and Scott combine their two passions, boating and health and wellness.

The ZunZún experience is versatile and can be personalized to the client’s needs. Book a couples’ massage, a group massage or mix and match treatments for a spa day on a boat. They are available for corporate events, company retreats, destination weddings, bachelorette parties and other events. Relax for the day or book a three to 10-day health and wellness retreat charter while island hopping. The vessel can accommodate up to 12 for cruising, but when anchored, up to 18 can relax comfortably.

“The true definition of ‘spa’ means water, and now we can really use the water,” said Scott.

When not cruising, ZunZún will serve as a floating spa. Although Secret Harbour is where you’ll most likely find them, don’t be surprised if you see the distinctive seafoam green boat pull up at Magens Bay and hang out an “open for business” sign. They will update their website frequently to announce where they’ll be anchored next. A new phone app will be announced soon.

In addition to treatments already available, ZunZún plans to offer additional services in the near future. Look for the installation of a portable infrared sauna, yoga instruction, Watzun aqua massage and, eventually, colon hydrotherapy.

Sadler and Scott introduced ZunZún at the St. Thomas boat show in November, and charter yacht companies seemed receptive to the idea. Not only does it give them something unique to offer their term charter guests, it gives the captain and crew a well needed break as well.

This is also a welcome service for hotels. Because many of the larger resorts in the Virgin Islands are currently closed due to reconstruction after last year’s hurricane season, few spas are available to accommodate guests of resorts that are now reopened.
