Had to make another stop to Firestone Walker this year. I even took the tour again cause it’s so much fun. It wasn’t as good as last year cause we didn’t get to walk the brewery floor, but they do offer a tasting tour now (I got to ‘sample’ Velvet Merlin).
After the tour I stopped by the gift shop / tasting room and tried UDBA, 100% oak-fermented unfiltered DBA and 100% oak-fermented DBA on nitro. If you didn’t know, DBA is actually a blend of 20% oak-fermented ale and 80% stainless. When there’s leftover oak-fermented beer from their Union barrel system they serve it at their taproom.
I also had to do the full Sucaba vertical, years 2015, ‘14 and ‘13 and got a fresh bottle to go. Of the three, my favorite was the year-old vintage. The fresh release was riddled with fusel notes and bourbon sweetness, a year later the fusel notes started to taper and barrel character really started to come through with additional notes of chocolate. After two years the barrel character fell off and although tasty, it was my least favorite vintage.
