i feel like a failure im gonna [remembers that outright admitting to suicidal ideation doesn’t cohere with the rational, unaffected persona i’ve so painstakingly cultivated for myself] infiltrate the world’s most secure prison in the center of a volcano, surrounded on all sides by a boiling lake, from which no one has ever escaped previously, with no escape plan in mind, on the slight chance that my dad was taken there as a prisoner of war.

I firmly believe that the Desert is one of Katara's strongest episodes as a character. But not because it portrays the rest of the Gaang as "worse" than her, eg how people will talk about her having to babysit "a blind girl, her high brother and Aang who is throwing a tantrum" and drag them out of a desert.
No, the Desert is wonderful because it shows us the Katara's unbreakable spirit and her resilient hope.

It gives us a wonderful look into Katara's psyche while she is under incredible duress. This episode is almost purely shown to us from Katara's perspective, and that was an excellent choice. Katara drives this episode.
We often associate hope with a more delicate, etheral feeling. But here, Katara exhibits a determined, powerful version of hope. A hope that spites a world that seems against her. A hope that Katara creates for herself, and for her companions.
Katara : [Grabs her head in annoyance.] Ugh ... We're getting out of this desert, and we're going to do it together! Aang, get up. Everybody, hold hands. We can do this. We have to.
We see Katara's focus on community, as she prioritises keeping the group together. Katara's more collectivist mindset keeps her focused on what matters to her: the group. Especially when the rest of the Gaang lose hope due to how dire their situation is.
Aang: What's anyone else doing?! [Pointing his staff at Katara.] What are you doing?! Katara : Trying to keep everyone together. Let's just get moving. We need to head this direction.
This episode doesn't exactly seek to frame Katara as more competent as the rest of the Gaang. It does something much more important. It shows us how deep her hope goes, how powerful her determination is, how strong her drive is. And that's why I adore it

Katara's character is strong enough to shine without putting down other characters, guys. It only draws our attention away from her strengths to the percieved flaws of the other characters.

every time I rewatch atla book 1 I become more obsessed with zhao. why is this middle-aged adult beefing so hard with a high schooler who's not even that into it?? zuko tried to set aside their differences and zhao immediately killed himself. no one is doing it like him

Just a tad late was marathoning atla all day but could not ‘not’ draw something for the 20th anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Gosh like this show has been so important to me for so long, it’s such a great inspiration for storytelling and worldbuilding not to mention the art style alone greatly influenced my own. Thank you for being a source of happiness, and comfort, and creativity for me and so many others.
Also p.s. Does anyone else remember the lil like look inside nicktoons studio videos they used play in-between the shows n commercials I used to love the how to draw certain cartoon character segments n my favorite was the one for Katara. Me and my friend both remember one of the tips in that tutorial was that Katara had 8 bumps in her braid. It’s super random, but I was only able to find clips of the ones for Aang and Appa on YouTube, that shits prolly lost media but I’ll stop yappin.

Sokka Suki Prom vibes 💙💚
Love the live action of these two 😘👌✨️
Wanted to draw them like their cartoon selves, but I got lost in the details. My semi-realism artist past is trying to take over! 😵🫣

Just things they can connect about… Zuko you should bring up the fact that you burned down Suki’s village again, I’m sure she’d appreciate it.

Katara and Sokka have one of the most important and fundamental bonds in the entire show. Their loyalty to each other and dedication to keep each other safe is what allows the adventure to start and their banter/dynamic and love for each other is what shapes how the gaang interacts with each other. The relationships and friendships they make through the course of the show are SO important, but you could not convince me that they aren’t each other’s number one the entire time. Sokka would choose Katara and her safety over anything else, no matter the cost, and Katara would do the same.

AND i’m NOT saying that the water tribe siblings aren’t complicated and interesting!!! they So are. sokka makes his entire identity center around providing and protecting but he still remembers kataras face in place of their mothers. are you KIDDING me?? that shit makes me cry every time i think about it. their dynamic is the foundation for the entire show, literally no other dynamic in the gaang would work without them
just saw a post that was like “atla wrote one of the most complex sibling dynamics ever (katara and sokka) and for some reason people point to zuko and azula like they’re not just having normal sibling interactions” and look. i am ranting and raving about my water tribe babies on the DAILY, i Love them & i love analyzing them, their dynamic is like a chew toy to me, they’re beautiful and tragic and sweet and deserve all the attention in the world. BUT to call the fire nation royal children NORMAL sibling interactions— what da hell was your childhood like? n o r m a l??? nOrMaL???
