Fennec Fox Kits Make Social Media Debut

New Guy at Staten Island Zoo ‘Gets to the Point’

Staten Island Zoo is home to a new African Crested Porcupette! The male was born in early January and was donated to Staten Island Zoo by the Bright’s Zoo, in Tennessee, on recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program. The new guy has been given the African name, ‘Bintu’, which means “precious/beautiful one”.

Thorny Devil Hatches at Alice Springs Desert Park

Alice Springs Desert Park, in NT, Australia, recently welcomed a Thorny Devil hatchling in the Park’s Nocturnal House. The Thorny Devil (also known as a ‘Thorny Dragon’, ‘Thorny Lizard’, or the ‘Moloch’) is a species that is native to the dry desert and shrub land of Australia.

Rare Tiger Cubs Venture Out of Den

A trio of tiny Sumatran Tiger cubs has made their first public appearance at Chester Zoo. The four-week-old Tiger triplets were born on January 2nd but have just started to emerge from their den, as their proud mother starts to show them off. The cubs are the off-spring of eight-year-old ‘Kirana’ and seven-year-old dad ‘Fabi’.

Blind Harbor Seal Finding New Cues

The Alaska SeaLife Center is currently caring for a blind Harbor Seal. He was the last Harbor Seal pup rescue of 2014, after being found at Land's End in Homer, AK. Because of his blindness, the pup, named ‘Bryce’, has been deemed non-releasable by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-National Marine Fisheries Service. Veterinary staff believe he suffered head trauma that was the likely cause of his vision loss.

Koala Joey Ready for His Close-Up

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, in South Carolina, was recently greeted by a new Koala joey. The male juvenile, born in May to ‘Lottie’ and ‘Jimmie’, emerged from mother’s pouch and has become quite the attraction. The birth of the new Koala is a rare occurrence for a zoo in the United States. There is only an average of seven joeys born per year in 11 U.S. zoos with Koala exhibits, and only two were born in 2014.

Clean-up Time for Tiger Triplets

It was recently bath-time for Sumatran Tiger, ‘Jaya’ and her female cubs, at Point Defiance Zoo. ‘Kirana’, ‘Dari’, and ‘Indah’ seemed to be enjoying their beautification routine with mom.

Help Name Shedd’s Sea Otter ‘Pup 681’

Shedd Aquarium’s rescued Southern Sea Otter pup, which came to the aquarium as part of a collaborative partnership with Monterey Bay Aquarium, is currently known as ‘Pup 681’. She has been swimming past significant milestones over the last few weeks and is growing quickly. Already double in size and weighing in at a little over 10 pounds, Pup 681 is now ready for a name!

The Dallas Zoo has welcomed a leggy, 6-foot-tall baby Giraffe, born October 26th to first-time mother, ‘Chrystal’. The male calf is a Reticulated Giraffe, a species with fewer than 4,700 left in the wild, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The father is the gregarious ‘Tebogo’, one of the Dallas Zoo’s most popular residents.

Name Dropping at the Oregon Zoo

On September 8th, beautiful African Lion Cubs were born at the Oregon Zoo. The healthy trio were the first offspring for their seven-year-old mother, ‘Kya’, and father, ‘Zawadi Mungu’. Now, the cubs are 4-weeks-old, adventurous, feisty…and they need names! Keepers have selected two possible names for each cub and are asking the public to vote. Voting ends 5pm, Thurs. Oct. 9th!

Clouded Leopard Cub Makes Herself at Home

Recently, a keeper from Cotswold Wildlife Park, in the UK, became foster parent to an abandoned Clouded Leopard Cub. Zookeeper Jamie Craig decided to care for the orphan at his home. With the help of his young children, Mr. Craig diligently tended to the female cub, named Nimbus.

Snow Leopard Boy and His Toys

The Snow Leopard cub at Milwaukee County Zoo has been busy playing with new toys and developing his skills! Patrons of the zoo are able to purchase toys and items from a wish list. The toys encourage behavior similar to what is seen in the wild, and they provide enrichment the growing zoo babies need to stimulate their minds and bodies.

Zoo keepers at the United Kingdom’s Chester Zoo have announced the birth of a baby Brazilian Tapir. Though he’s tiny now, the calf will double his weight in his first 14-21 days!
