Artist’s Statement:
Final Collage
For my final project I wanted to not only find an article that caught my eye, but also something I could connect to. I found this article in The New Yorker and I had just finished watching the show Beef (twice actually) not too long ago. I absolutely loved the show and knew I wanted to use the article on it. When working on my color analysis I chose to go with a ¼” grid because I just loved the look of the smaller triangles and felt they gave more movement to the piece overall. There also ended up being a lot more colors than I initially saw picking the article. When working on my collage version I just wanted to pull forward pieces of the original that may aid in clarifying the objects. Pieces of the cars and the background of cars is what I started with and then I moved on to both of the characters and some of their features.

Final Albers READING response:
When I read Albers words he sounds like an artist. But he sounds like the stereotypical artist like the ones who are always trying to beat to their own drum and reject all norms, things like that. Although a little too up in the air and in the head for me I did find some things that he talked about interesting. I was always taught that art is the imitation of life and he mentioned that saying that it behaves like man. He said that color behaves like man by self realization and then realization of relationships with others. Interesting. I do like somewhat the way he talks about approaching his work and projects. He talks about how he just kinda lets the work do what it does he doesn’t try to force anything, he just goes with the flow as if the piece is a living object he’s following behind.

Final book covers!
Artist Statement:

Book covers
For this assignment I wanted to mix the favorite animal and favorite country prompts. I went with monkeys in a Thai jungle scene. I just wanted something playful that visually had life to it. When creating each cover I wanted to go with bright fun colors. For the monochromatic I felt green was a good way to portray the jungle setting. For the Trichromatic color scheme I just wanted really bold colors, I wanted to attempt to be daring with such a bright red and see how it reacted with very muted and desaturated colors. And for my paper cut out version in a bezold pattern I just chose colors I found pleasing visually and put them together and switched their placement from front to back cover.

Inside ‘The Red Studio’: Ann Temkin with 6 artists on Matisse -
I enjoyed how the podcast was strutted with “live phone calls.” I liked what the second artist mentioned in her call about how Matisse’s piece makes you think about his process. You end up asking your self what can first what did he do next. She was analyzing the possible timeline of how he worked and concluded that he most likely had to wait around a month before going in with such a bold red.
The third caller focused on what Matisse’s thought process might have been and debating if the artistic choices were a good idea or not.
Forth caller, said the red was strange but the red makes the paintings like flowers in a garden. By this he means that it gives a different view of a studio versus a plain realism kind of view. He also mentions that the color gave the piece a different idea of light and “looked as if light was coming through.” They talk about how real Matisse’s work is because he isn’t trying to cover things up but rather leaves imperfections.
Decisions that are reversible versus non reversible: it’s just “part of the deal”
The studio as a subject- “classic motif” “catalogues recent paintings” not all of the objects in the studio even belonged to him.
