“Victory Speech”
is a photo essay featuring Arizona State University student Jordan Claire and her journey through the Twenty-Fifth Annual Arizona Japanese Speech Contest in spring 2014.
Hosted by the Arizona Association of Teachers of Japanese, Arizona State University and the Los Angeles Consulate General of Japan, the contest offers students of Japanese a chance to test their proficiency as well as learn more about Japan through panels and side events including an authentic Japanese tea ceremony.
Having just started learning Japanese in January 2014, the 22-year-old criminal justice and linguistics double major worked under various mentors and professors to prepare for the contest in April. Her speech about her love of natto (fermented soy beans) would win her first place in the category of first-year students as well as the grand prize, beating out the 42 other competitors.
