Going on errands nowadays became a comforting task than back home. Before, it was a chore to have to go out to get groceries or fight the subway traffic. There was just never enough time in the day as far as Ryuji was concerned. He missed it at times- missed their home. Missed the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Then he thought about not being in school and suddenly, he was all good again.
He trails behind Yusuke as they enter an art supply store, looking to and fro at all the things the other uses to create his pieces. It’s not his scene, not a world he understands or is good at, but the organization of each aisle, with their respective mediums, catches his eye. He looks upon different tubes of paint, eyes widening at the price tag beneath them.
“W-wha-- no way, why’s this so expensive!? Why can’t you just use the grocery store ones, those are way cheaper!”

THE TIME THEY SHARED HERE had easily become some of the most memorable moments he’s had, if not a vast majority of them. He tries to recall a time before Rin, when he had first arrived but never really branched out or explored. With her at his side, he felt as he did as a Phantom Thief and perhaps, even better than those times. She dragged him along places, not that he’d ever complain, or egg him to go above and beyond in his day to day life. Hell, even days where they’d lounge at one another’s apartments, playing video games or watching TV, he came to appreciate them all. It’d only be right if he’d finally do something about it, right?
Right.
Right now, he’s unusually calm. Ryuji had times he could be--cool and collected--but under these specific circumstances? It was amazing he hadn’t bolted out of sheer embarrassment. He couldn’t lose steam now, not when he was so close. With her hand in his, he curls his fingers over the back of her smaller hand, leading the way out with a grin. She knew just what to say, even as he felt all the nervous energy in his body bundle up.
“I mean, did you see this place? If their garden doesn’t have a maze, we can go ahead and make one ourselves! Although, guess that’d be destruction of private property...plus, I’m sure we might get cursed or something.” Comes his lighthearted remark as they break away from the heat of the crowds to the crisp, night air.
“Huh, you’re right about that. Look at you, soundin’ all comfortin’ and insightful. Looks like the roles switched, huh?”
There’s people scattered below the balcony, relaxing in the outdoor party area of the garden as well. Fortunately, the two blondes were high up enough to not warrant too much attention or have any eavesdroppers. Gently, Ryuji releases Rin’s hand, his gaze darting from party goer to party goer until he feels it bubbling inside of him, unable to stretch this out any longer. With the present still tucked away in his jumpsuit, he pats his chest, exhaling any last worry away.
“Hey, Rin,” he starts, feeling his heart beat loud and heavy against his rib cage. Ryuji was afraid the other might hear and would give himself away. He’s faced God himself, so why was doing this harder than that? “Y’know, I been thinkin’...”
“I don’t think I got to meet ya when I first came here. I came and my friends were here but everyone was kinda on their own. I was sorta wanderin’ for a bit, y’know? Some left, some came back--but different--and I keep wonderin’ when’s the next time someone’ll leave. But when I met you, I couldn’t have imagined how much I’d come to like it here...and then, after a while, I was like ‘I don’t wanna go home if Rin’s here’.” His steadfast admission rings true, a hand clenched into a fist as he thinks about it. His expression is hardened for a moment before he realizes she’s probably looking at him and he reddens from his ears to his neck.
“P-point is--! I-I just thought about what you told me in my dream-memory thing. I didn’t know, before that, if I was just happy with us bein’ friends-- I mean I am! I damn well am--but if you- ‘cause I know you don’t say things for the hell of it, if you meant what you said then I--UGH!” By now, Ryuji’s at his limit, ready to explode from how NOT according to plan this was all going. Where was his cool confession? His suave, totally swoon-over admission of his feelings towards her?
Because that’s what this is. He wanted to get this off his chest so badly.
“I LIKE YOU TOO RIN! I dunno when it happened but after a while, I just kept lookin’ for ya. And then you said it first and I thought it really was just my own dream-- and I WANTED THIS TO BE COOLER, DAMN IT!” His yells do have some people look on for a brief moment, only to look away once Ryuji steadies himself, shakily reaching into his shirt pocket and pulling out a rectangular box, walking right up to her with an exasperated look on his face.
“...I like you too Rin. I wanna make it official. If you’ll still take this idiot.” His voice is struggling to be above a murmur, placing the box into her hands and nervously awaiting her response.
ziodynero:
THAT MEMORY WASN’T ONE HE COULD EASILY FORGET. After having escaped that, feeling more refreshed than he’s ever felt might he add, there was something permanently cemented within it. Rin had been there and fortunately, safely rescued alongside the memory of his friends. It seemed that no matter the outcome, both of them would’ve made it out okay but he wasn’t going to chance it. That, and what she had said then– well. It’s weighed on his mind since then. He heard her, loud and clear, all before the explosion and all before they could all be safe. His heart pounded so loud out of his chest and even recalling it now, made his heart swell with overwhelming adoration.
The aftermath of that was awkward and tense. Ryuji, ever the fool, had wanted to reassure her sooner but instead, thought it better to wait until he could find the right time to return her feelings. He didn’t say anything to outright reject her or deny her, but whenever she’d appear before him after that dream, he’d get tense and embarrassed, and on occasions, ran away. Admittedly, he could’ve handled it better, maybe even had SAID something, but he was so worked up with giving her all he’s got, he refused to let it end on a memory that was from his past.
That’s right— what Ryuji wanted for Rin, for them- was to have a brand new memory to call their own. Here, he decided, would be it. (Later, if all went well, he’d have to personally thank the hosts.)
She stands before him, snapping Ryuji out of his thoughts, and with the other so close, that heart clenching feeling seizes him. He wants to hold her close already, not caring who’s around to see. He recomposes himself when she pulls away, turning his gaze as he tries to hide an almost lovesick smile.
“Thanks, Rin. Some blacksmith I am.”
At her offer of food, Ryuji nods and follows along, small talk filling the air between them. It never ceased to amaze him how easily they fell into conversation, what little things they could talk about and never get bored. He even snags the last deviled egg and makes a dumb face at her, just to get her to laugh and get a reaction. It was just so…natural. He wanted to do this forever, if he could. In the end, he didn’t eat that much, afraid that if he overate, he’d get a stomachache. The setting around them shifted as folks readied themselves for another dance and performance. Nervously, he shoots up, his expression almost unreadable.
“Hey, wanna go stand on the balcony with me? After all that soda, I could use some cool air to wind down, you know? Did you see the garden? I wonder if they have those like, hedge mazes or whatever.” Before he turns to walk off however, he extends his hand to her, offering her an uncharacteristically shy smile. “Rich people…they seem to have all the fun.”
The longer that they spend together the easier it becomes for Rin to push what had happened to the back of her mind, falling back into tandem with him, almost amazed at how easy it is. They’ve always gotten along since the very beginning, when the city had first thrown them together under the strangest circumstances and remained inseparable ever since which in and of itself was a miracle; so many people from this place came and went. Here one day and then gone the next. Even Len had been one of them. But no matter where she turned, Ryuji was always there. Reliable and strong; thoughtful and kind. Whether it was to support her, or cheer her up or even just to make her laugh much like how he had been doing throughout the night, he had slowly become a consistency in her life that she hadn’t even realized she’d been yearning for right up until the moment where her feelings had grown so strong that it was difficult to keep them shoved away day in and day out.
Obviously she wasn’t very good at keeping secrets. But even so, the other hadn’t seemed to hold it against her and at the very least was kind enough to let her down gently by not outright turning her confession down as she had come to assume. He knew how awful she was when it came to rejection, after all, and she’d never take it lightly. And though painful as it may be to come to terms with the knowledge that her feelings ended up not being reciprocated after all, she much preferred having him by her side as a friend than to not be there at all.
Once the excitement of the night slowly begins to dissipate does her nerves return tenfold, worried that Ryuji is about to make a swift exit and head back home when he rises up only to balk when he extends his hand for her. She stares down at his open palm quietly, heat rising to her cheeks as a wave of hopefulness wells up within her unexpectedly. But the blonde is quick to disregard the action– he probably just doesn’t want her to get lost in the crowd. The mention of the garden catches her attention quickly, though. A welcomed distraction as she becomes intrigued at the very idea of it.
“No, I didn’t notice it when I came in. Do you really think there might be a maze? Let’s go, then! I want to go explore it together if there is!”
She’s all too eager to reach back out, grasping his hand and rising to her feet as well with a laugh, “That’s not true, Ryuji. We have plenty of fun ourselves just the way that we are.”

HIS LEG BOUNCED IN RESTLESS ANTICIPATION as he dusted off his khaki jumper for what felt like the 36th time that day. (Probably more, but who’s counting?) His outfit was fine, he knew that much, but the idea of going to a big event with the entire city attending almost made him uneasy. The only memory he has of fancy dress up are of corrupted adults who didn’t care much for the well being of others. He knows it’s not like that here, at least he hopes that to be the case, but being on edge doesn’t go away. Not in a place like this.
When he’s finally cooled himself down, he heads towards the party, knowing full well she’s already inside, giving a performance of a lifetime. He wanted to watch it from the beginning, but Ryuji found himself making last minute wrappings for a surprise he had. It seemed about time, right? Whether he vocalized it or not, deep down, he refused to ignore it any longer. Ugh, the woes of going all out! For all his complaining however, he knew he wouldn’t do this any other way.
It was gonna be here and now– that much was certain.
When he strides in along with a crowd, he’s impressed by the grandeur of the place. He didn’t personally know the hosts, but damn if they didn’t know how to live it up. The ballroom seemed impossibly large but right on cue, his eyes manage to lock on to Rin’s location and he makes his way over, excitement suddenly rushing in his veins. The moment he comes near, however, he manages a sheepish grin, trying not to get overly embarrassed at their matching outfits.
“Hey you. Sorry I just missed your performance–I heard a lil bit of it from outside though! So, uh…how do I look?”
She spots him almost instantly, her gaze drawing to his own much like a moth is drawn to a flame and the smile that splits across her face is one filled with excitement and warmth. The crowd around her becomes a blur as she shoots out a hasty ‘see ya!’ to the person she’d been chatting with just a moment before so that she can push past the others, meeting Ryuji halfway. It isn’t until she’s standing right in front of him that she finally falters, unsure of what to say. In truth, their conversations have been sparse, filled with an awkward and unspoken tension ever since The Big Mistake (which is what she has gone about referring to as her accidental confession to him recently).
It startles her how much she’s grown over the past year within the city when he comments about missing her performance and no irritation flares up at the admission– not that he has to say it, anyways, as she had certainly swept the sea of faces in search for his own, albeit briefly– but instead finds herself pleased to know that he heard at least a semblance of it. That he cares enough to mention it because he knows how important her career is to her.
“It’s okay, I can always just give you an encore later,” the blonde keeps her tone light, playful and desperate to try and eradicate this weird vibe that they’ve fallen into; part of her hopeful that they can pretend she never opened her big, dumb mouth to begin with and go back to how they were before. The latter half knows that things will never be the same between them now, though, and her chest clenches as she finds herself running her suddenly sweaty palms against the overalls she has on. At least their matching costumes look cute, though she can’t help but quirk a brow at the hat on his head when she lifts her gaze after he asks for her opinion. “You look fine, but…”
She suddenly laughs though Rin is unable to tell whether it’s from genuine amusement, her nerves, or a combination of the two. The hat is crooked, seemingly having shifted on his rush over to the ball and if Len were still here she just knows he’d have made some sort of smart remark about it and so she reaches up to gently adjust it, fingers lingering for a moment too long, “There. That’s much better.”
When she glances back at him does she realize how close she’s gotten and her stomach seemingly leaps as she stutters out an apology and takes a giant step away, applying more distance between them than before and nearly backing up into a stranger in the process.
“Aha… Um…”
“D’ya wanna, like, get something to drink or to eat?” She finishes off lamely.

“I guess it is? I don’t know how it all works either, actually.” It’s true, Ryuji didn’t get a SINGLE thing when it came to Personas. Maybe he shouldn’t be spilling the secrets anyway, but this kid seemed genuine and it wasn’t like he was risking too much by trying to explain. “When the hearts of my friends and I share a common goal, our Personas appear and we are able to save people! We fight off all sorts of monsters too just to make that a reality.”
Teaziodynero:
“I don’t know how to explain them, they’re like the manifestation of our spirit? Rebellion? They’re so cool and kinda attractive if you ever see one! For example, my favorite Persona, other than my Captain Kidd, are Arsene and Carmen, they both are incredibly strong and formidable opponents…just seeing them in action really gets my heart racing, y’know!?”
Oh no, the floodgates. Please, please run. He won’t stop, he’s actually a nerd.
❝Ma-ni-fes-chin? Reb-Lion? Uu.. Maria doesn’t know what that means, but it sounds amazing! Is it like magic?❞
Absolutely everything that came out of the boy’s mouth might have been considered nonsense by anyone else. But though she didn’t understand, the child was absolutely enthralled. Especially if it could somehow be tied back to magic.

The adrenaline rushes through him, pushing that strength that laid dormant inside him to it’s fullest potential. He doesn’t even register her weight, if she even weighed anything, until they’re at the side of his companions. Even if the Phantom Thieves here are from his memories, they still greet him, wondering where he’s been. Gently, he puts her down and looks back at the hallway they came. The imaginary people of this ship act in a way that makes this ship sinking feel real- screams of terror and yelling, all running towards wherever the nearest lifeboat may be. It’s just like then too.
His friends start to talk, saying how there isn’t much time left, or if they don’t find a lifeboat too, they’ll all be trapped. Ryuji turns to their leader, a boy clad in all black save for his red gloves and black and white mask. The other turns and looks outwards, the nearest lifeboat in the nearby distance. So close, yet so far. Just like before, his friends chatter among themselves and, just like before, Ryuji already knew what needed to be done. This dream, this memory, while daunting was also one that changed him for the better. It was in this moment he realized just how much he believed in the Phantom Thieves-- and how important their mission was to save people.
Most of all, it was when he realized he would never let anything happen to them. To any of them and now, with Rin here, he knew it was time for this memory to end, to get back to the real world and put his glory days of being a thief behind.
“Rin,” his voice rises above the chaos around them, a gentle hand squeezing her shoulder. There’s a comfort knowing that once they wake up, she’ll be there and, when they do, he’ll have his mind made up over things he’s left unspoken for a while now. “Stay with the others. I’ll get us outta here.”
“I got this. Hang tight, I’ll nab the boat.” (Words he’s said once before, said again as if for the first time. His friends turn to him, incredulous and concerned.)
Without room for much else, he jumps down a little, feeling the eyes of his friends on him. He knows he has to make it, knows he will make it even if the others didn’t. Looking back, it was reckless and brash, but he was never one to think things through. It was now or never- and when it came to their safety, he wasn’t about to risk it. Ryuji lined up, as though he were back on the track. This would be easy-- just like before.
He bolts with all his strength, as much as his legs could give him. He jumps and there’s a small explosion somewhere, but not enough to stop him. Running like this, with the end on his mind, he runs up towards the emergency latch, hanging onto it as his weight pulls it down, unleashing the lifeboat into the waters before them. When they look up at him, Ryuji grins from ear to ear, giving them a thumbs up. In any moment, there’d be a loud explosion that sends them all back, pulling them from this dream.
Before all that, he looks to Rin who’s managed to safely get into the lifeboat with his friends, offering her a soft smile. Just before the blonde boy could get a word out, the explosion goes off, sending him away, knowing he’ll get the scolding of a lifetime once they reunite later.
ziodynero:
There’s not much time left. This much, Ryuji knows. He knows that if he doesn’t move, they’ll get trapped here- or at least, they’ll experience something horrible like it. He doesn’t know what will happen if they do stay and he’s not willing to find out- not when he has someone he wants to protect.
Not when he has someone he has to protect.
Despite knowing this however, Rin stops him, confronts him- and for the first time Ryuji sees her. Anyone looking in would see a pushy, demanding girl. They’d think she was only doing it for the attention, for the sole reason of getting her voice across- but Ryuji could see there was something else in her words and in her gaze. He feels his chest squeeze and eyes widen when she yells at him- the care and protectiveness in her voice shining through. He wonders when this started- or, was it going to be like this between them? He realizes she cares as much for him as he does for her. Maybe even in the same way.
That thought makes him nervous- not because he isn’t ready but because, well, what more could he offer her? He doesn’t know, he can’t think right now. He doesn’t even want to argue but if he too doesn’t say what he needs to, she’ll get hurt.
“What about me? This place- I know how this place works Rin. I can fight. I can protect you. I’m not about to do something stupid and reckless knowing you’re right beside me! If I can’t even do that– then what kind of person would that make me?! I’ll never forgive myself if you get hurt because of me…I swear, I won’t let anythin’ happen to me- I’d hate to see you cry because of it.”
With his thought finished, the ship around them creaks a loud, wailing groan and in an instant, Ryuji pulls Rin close to him, placing her head over his chest. His heart beats loudly- both from adrenaline and something else.
“So let’s quit standin’ here! We gotta go- NOW.”
Without another explanation, Ryuji lifts her off of the ground, knowing he’ll endure any embarrassing complaints as he’s running. For now though? He had to reach the rest of his crew and get her to safety, no matter what it took. Everything was gonna end up alright in the end. It always managed to.
“But…!”
This argument is one that could drag on if time were to permit it, a retort already in mind to knock down every point that Ryuji makes. She wants to express that she isn’t nearly as fragile as she may seem given that she isn’t even human and therefore Ryuji should put his safety far above her own and, most of all, that in spite of it she still wishes she could somehow be stronger so that she could protect him even just a little. It hardly seems fair that she can barely return the favor if push came to shove. Her expression twists against her will, hands clenched into fists as she shakes her head quickly as if that will silence him.
While the things that he says are kind and mean more to her than she could ever hope to express, he isn’t getting the bigger picture– he doesn’t fully get just what it is that she is trying so hard to articulate to him without outright saying so because that would be humiliating. Yet the mounting frustration both with his recklessness and her own helplessness clouds her mind; prevents her from thinking straight.
“No, you don’t understand! What I’m trying to say is that–”
The confession dies on her tongue when the clangor interrupts her and for a split second Rin is grateful that the distraction saved her from making such an irreversible mistake. The android doesn’t have time to process what, exactly, could have caused the noise because before she realizes what is happening, she is being tugged into a warm embrace. The action calms her, giving her a moment to just relax. Once the dust settles, she can just barely make out the rapid beating of his heart and she wonders that if she had one, would it perhaps be hammering in the same way? Their moment is short-lived and reaches an abrupt end when he literally sweeps her off of her feet, a surprised yelp escaping her.
“RYUJI!!” It’s a warning that falls upon deaf ears much to her chagrin. She would have put up much more of a struggle due to not wanting to slow him down any more than she already has but truth be told, she is a bit frightened to find out what will happen if they don’t get out of there soon and thus chooses to comply and not make things any more difficult than she already has. As usual. As they reach a clearing and draw nearer to a group of strangers she glances up at the latter, curious as to who they are and what they will think when they see her being carried but by their expressions it’s almost as if none of them even notice her. “You can put me down now…”

“Yes, that’s insightful Yusuke but who do you share that love with?”
“Oh! Earlier, I was sayin’ how cool Arsene and Carmen were and Akira straight up disowned me. I thought we were bros!”

“WHY WOULD I POSSIBLY BE TALKING ABOUT—”
“...you know, this reminds me of stuff where people get feelings when they fight other people. You’re just gonna give people weird ideas and then turn those weird ideas into feelings.”
He could’ve sworn he saw a TV drama about this once. Isn’t it that rivals-to-lovers thing? Could that be a real thing in real life? Seems impossible and yet, here this person was, aloud and proud.

HIS GIFT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE ARRIVED BY NOW. Clearly it wasn’t and Ryuji was left staring at the tracking map on his phone, only to stare in disbelief when it changed from “in transit” to “delivered”. He had seen it while out shopping and immediately had a recipient in mind. So the fact it was running behind schedule was dampening his mood more than angering him. It seemed that nowadays, his annoyance was kept in check.
He flops back onto his bed letting on a soft groan as he feels his phone vibrate in his hand. Raising the phone over his head, he sees a text from a name he’s never seen before. A new person? Well to be fair, Ryuji didn’t pay attention to any names outside of close friends so this person might not be new.
TO: LIO FROM: RYUJI
[1/3] you sure? i can come grab it if you’d like. [2/3] we can meet in front of a nearby cafe or something. [3/3] which ward are you in?
Well good news was it was with someone. Bad news was he didn’t know who the hell this person was. Also: what if they didn’t have his box? Okay, so they wouldn’t know unless otherwise, but Ryuji was a skeptic.
[1/ 2] can you take a picture of the box? [2/2] it shouldn’t be too big--unless they put a lot of stuffing.
He’s not sure the best way to go about giving this back to the proper person. He has the name and address, and wonders how it could have been delivered to him instead. Definitely an accident, so he doesn’t think about it much further than that. But, getting it to the right person falls in his hands too ( —if he wanted to make sure another mishap didn’t occur, at least. )
He didn’t open the box, obviously, and it’s kept on his bedside table for the moment. He wanted to confirm with those that sent it to him whether the person he intends to drop it off with is the right person at all, but there doesn’t appear to be contact information on the box otherwise. Suddenly, it occurs to him that the recipient should be in the city’s contact list on his phone, so he hurriedly picks his own up in order to send a quick message to hopefully who this item is intended for.

Hello, is this ‘Ryuji Sakamoto’? A package of yours was delivered to me by mistake. Please let me know a good time to drop it off when you can.
That should do it.
