In all seriousness I’m so excited and honoured to be a part of the modding team for this project!! I’m in charge of the writing side of things, which I have editing and moderating experience from other projects so I’m excited to make this zine the best it can be

Mannnnnnn I love it when media gives you a character that just hits you straight in the identity. Love that for you /gen

To tag onto the analysis bit, Fubuki is one of those times where I feel like they nailed the “naive ditzy girl” trope which is really hard to do but imo they got the fact that you need to give her obliviousness something to back it up. You see that her parents failed in teaching her anything of the world so of course she’s woefully unprepared for most situations and unknowing of everything around her. You see her have moments of vulnerability where she immediately takes blame onto herself for every little inconvenience and react appropriately when things are very obviously going wrong in front of her so you know her flightiness isn’t from a lack of CARING. In fact, seeing as every single experience is something new for her and she has a ridiculously powerful ability that gives her the ability to redo practically anything that goes wrong, it makes total sense. She has to be on high alert at all times, taking in 110% of her surroundings, yeah she’s not gonna be the most socially intelligent or street smart, and that’s why it works. She just needs patience and someone to share her enthusiasm and remind her that the entire world doesn’t have to be on her shoulders

the more i look into fubuki’s character, the more i realize that she’s literally just like me. her cluelessness + actions tend to make people frustrated, especially when you’re in the moment of something. if that makes sense, but if you know me irl you’d understand. but my personality is literally just that i’m someone who doesn’t really understand most things or even doesn’t click on something immediately. like if you told me a joke or a copypasta that i NEVER heard of i’d take it as a serious thought 😆 WHICH IS EMBARRASSING ON MY PART AND I FEEL SO BAD ABOUT BEING LIKE THIS HHFHFHDHR

or we can even take a serious example where you try to explain something to me and i just…still don’t understand it afterwards to where i need you to explain it to me in simple terms.

Chapter 1:

- Satsuki is successfully able to calm Haruhiko down when he gets violently aggressive with Tsurugi, calling him “Kobaboxer” to ease the tension.

Chapter 2:

- When Satsuki is the last to show up after the BDA, Haruhiko immediately exclaims how worried he was that she had disappeared.

Chapter 3:

- Though Haruhiko initially wants nothing to do with Yuki after his exile, once Satsuki invites Yuki to play poker with them, he has a complete change of heart and proposes that they settle the dispute over a game of poker.

The reason their relationship works so well imo is because they both have so much to offer each other as people. Haruhiko, despite being a known womanizer, is never shown to make a pass at Satsuki until Chapter 4, which implies that he only saw her as a friend until then. This is really important for their relationship to actually mean something despite his character, since they made the deep emotional connection FIRST, and then he realized he was in love with her after. So it’s a real, genuine RELATIONSHIP that goes beyond infatuation.

And it goes both ways too, both characters are clearly smarter and more emotionally mature than they let on, with Satsuki’s beloved chapter quote and being shown that she knows how to manipulate peoples’ emotions in her FTEs, and Haruhiko with his Ch. 4 plan and his comments in Ch. 3 about how he’s just as scared and upset as everyone else and everyone has to do their part in moving the group forward. They put on a front of ignorance and bliss, but it’s clear that they’re taking on the responsibility of keeping everyone else grounded in an atmosphere that is otherwise irrecoverably gloomy and desperate. So it’s clear that they play an important role in keeping EACH OTHER grounded since their principles are so similar, hence why they spend so much time around each other and base the bulk of their friendship on playing games and pranks to keep the other smiling.

And then of course there’s Chapter 4, which is its own separate essay. Like genuinely I could go on for SO LONG about all the little subtle signs and dialogue inserts and how the chapter and ship as a whole have SO MUCH to say about self-sacrifice as a concept and who it’s REALLY harder for, or just the rarely-discussed impact of the grief it leaves behind. But god is it compelling, and the fact that they both immediately decided that being the one to die at the hand of the other was the preferable option really says everything that needs to be said.

Sorry for rambling, I didn’t mean to intrude, this ship is just so interesting to me and it’s so much fun to peer into their interactions and see how meticulously it’s been fostered from the very beginning. Anyone feel free to interact about this ship at any time

SATSUHIKO

(I didn't wanna leave this account with no new posts anymore, so I did this. I promise I will write about other characters in later posts, but again, I can't help it, Satsuhiko is my favorite ship after all.)

Before Chapter 4, they had quite some moments together. These display their wholesome friendship and allow us to see how they become closer and closer as time goes by. I also love this moments because it shows that it does not matter if they are alone or with others, they just seem to love each other company so much to the point of being together most of the time. If I remember correctly, all of them are:

Chapter 1

Before the moment when Haruhiko broke the nameplates, they were having fun along with Kiyoka as well to forget the serious situation they're in.

Chapter 2

That moment where they came late to the breakfast gathering because they were playing basketball before.

Chapter 3

When they were playing poker, which later Maeda joined in the game.

When they were both watching Maeda's luck in the casino slot machine, along with Teruya and Kinji.

The reason why I wanted talk about this is due to all of this is sometimes overlooked, and it what makes their love in Chpater 4 not seem random. Imagine if Haru and Satsuki never had a single interaction during the killing game and then, all of a sudden, Haru finds that famous picture of him and Satsuki kissing. Then the case and class trial proceeds to be the exact same as we all know. That would make the case extremely random, rushed and weird, that's the importance behind those moments.

With that out of the way, I'm gonna talk about Chapter 4. It is the chapter that is mostly dedicated to make Satsuhiko / Kobaira shine. And I really love how before Haru finding the pic I mentioned in the paragraph above, you can already see how their friendship is slowly turning into love.

And now, the moment where I definitely felt upset. The sacrifice. Even if it made cry, perfection is how I would this bit played out. Their new love beginning but ending tragically soon by Haruhiko's death, and also how in here, knowing that Haru didn't even think it twice when sacrificing himself, it shows how of a great person he is and how great of a character he has become. And for Satsuki, the sacrifice made her stronger, made her become a better character than she already was. I also believe that one of the reasons why she just wanted to die (apart from being a really sweet soul who is honest and wants the best for the others.) was because she couldn't stand living without Haru and although is extremely sad, it just shows how much they loved each other.

And of course, I love how were a couple before the killing game and then were able to fall in love again.

Other things about Satsuhiko: (These are not opinions)

Haru becomes much less agressive towards Satsuki's silly remarks over time.

You can see how in Chapter 4, Haruhiko favors and protects Satsuki already before the sacrifice. This can be seen when he offers Satsuki to steal food and when they were caught for stealing said food, where Haruhiko went to protect Satsuki and lie to protect her.

During Chapter 4, Satsuki only trusts Haruhiko. She only hangs out with him and nobody else.

In all seriousness I’m definitely gonna form some sort of structured analysis on the end of the game. I think everything they set up works EXTREMELY well with the game’s themes and what they set up beforehand. There are some things I wish they’d elaborated on more, but that’s what the sequel is for, right? :)
