The Knight Class

Just wrote this for the Frankenstein of a house rule set I'm currently calling "Goblin-Dragons on Crack." It's a sort of mash-up of rules I like from Knock!, the GLoG and various editions of D&D. If your familiar with any of those it ought to look at least vaguely familiar.

I wanted to make something that filled the fantasy of a quixotic weirdo wandering around following their Code of Chivalry to ridiculous conclusions. That's pretty self explanatory from the class, though. The system is a work-in-progress, so things like equipment, and skills if I decide to add them aren't quite there yet.

Knight

Hit Die: d10

Knightly Oaths

As a knight, you are sworn to uphold your oaths at all costs. In the darkest moments, your quixotic devotion to these oaths brings you strength. Write down two oaths you have sworn to uphold. Some sample oaths include:

Serve your liege lord with utmost loyalty in all matters.

Defend the innocent against any who would harm or oppress them.

Defend your honor and the honor of all who deserve it, even with your life.

Live in poverty and humility, give every penny you can spare to those in need.

Chivalrous Deeds

Each time you heedlessly throw yourself into danger in defense of your oaths, your resolve is only strengthened. When you take an action that has a great material or mortal cost to you, in service to one of your oaths, you gain a Chivalry Die. You can gain a Chivalry Die for upholding an oath even when upholding one oath contradicts the other.

You may spend a Chivalry Die on any turn after you gain it to add a d6 to an attack roll or saving throw. You may only have one Chivalry Die at a time for the oath you gained it from.

At 4th level Chivalry Dice become d8s.

Bodyguard

When an adjacent ally would take damage from an attack, you can choose to take that damage for them. This ability has a 4-in-6 chance of succeeding. 

If this action serves your oath, and the damage incurred seems seriously likely to harm you, you may gain a Chivalry Die.

Oaths of Moment

To uphold your knightly status, you must uphold even those oaths sworn in the heat of the moment. Once each day, you may swear to carry out a specific goal, so long as they do not violate your original two oaths. 

While you are sworn to this goal, you may gain a Chivalry Die for costly actions in service to it. You may only swear another Oath of Moment once you have fulfilled your previous one or fulfilling it has become impossible.

Leap of Faith

Once per day, you may spend a Chivalry Die to get a critical success on an attack roll or saving throw that directly serves one of your oaths.

This lovely image comes from the blog Beyond Fomalhaut in their review of a reprint of El Raja Key, one of the first and most iconic dungeons in the early years of Dungeons and Dragons. The dungeon itself is fantastic and lovingly crafted but the thing the caught my eye was the map.

This map, in one image, encapsulates just about all the reasons I am enthralled by the OSR and old school RPG communities. This lovingly hand-drawn map of a region dramatically called the Barbarous Coast! tells a story in a way most glossy digital maps never will. I imagine each location on the map being drawn in as the party finds it, every town and forest and river having some significance, some story behind it, some story you could really understand if you were there.

I doubt Rob Kuntz, who drew this map, worried overly much about whether his world was original enough, or thought too much about story arcs in his campaign beyond the story that the players made through their adventures. He certainly never suffered from comparing himself to other GMs, given that he was just about only one around at the time.

As a Gen Z RPG nerd, it's easy to fall into the trap of believing your campaign has to some broad, sprawling fantasy epic, or an exploration of your own Totally Original Campaign Setting. But this map is still what RPGs are about for me. Grown, adult people with colored pencils making up places like Fang Forest in the Barbarous Coast, and playing imaginary games about the fantastic adventures that take place therein.
