Everything you need to know about Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the large intestine (colon). The colon is the last and final part of the digestive tract and although it can happen to anyone but it majorly affect older adults. They begin with benign non-cancerous clumps of cells known as polyps, which are formed inside the colon. With time, some of these polyps can become colon cancers. These polyps are usually small and produce less or very few symptoms, which is why doctors recommend removing polyps to help in preventing colon cancer.
Colon cancer is also known as colorectal cancer, which is made of the two terms, colon cancer and rectal cancer.
 Causes of Colon Cancer -
1) The DNA of a cell is an instruction set for the cell. Colon cancer begins when these healthy cells in the colon bring about changes in their DNA through mutations. Normally, cells grow and divide in an uneven manner for the smooth functioning of one’s body but when the DNA of a cell changes or is damaged, it becomes cancerous. Cells keep on dividing, even when they are not required. This group of cells then form a tumour which destroys other cells and travels to other parts of the body.
2) Diseases of colon can also increase the risk of having colon cancer. These diseases include chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
3) Gene syndromes are also one less likely cause of colon cancer. The common gene inherited syndromes that can cause colon cancer are Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and Lynch syndrome, also known as Hereditary Non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).
4) Diet can also be one of the causes of colon cancer as colon is a part of the digestive system. A typical western diet with low fibre and high fat can also cause colon cancer.
5) A sedentary lifestyle is not good for body anyway and is found to be a cause for colon cancer too.
6) Diabetes and Obesity are considered to be the diseases that accompany colon cancer or become its predecessor.
7) Radiation therapy directed especially to the abdomen can also be one of the reasons for colon cancer because of the high energy element exposure.
If you are facing any of the above causes, you should get in touch for the cancer treatment in Noida.
Symptoms of Colon Cancer -
Change in bowel habits: A persistent change in your bowel habits, including chronic diarrhea or constipation
Bleeding: Bleeding in stool or rectal bleeding can also be another symptom of colon cancer.
Abdominal Discomfort: Any pain in the abdominal region or gas, that causes discomfort can also be a sign of colon cancer.
Weakness or Fatigue: Feeling tired all the time or experiencing weakness can be a symptom.
Unexplained weight loss: Losing weight without knowing the reason or always having a feeling that the bowel is not empty can point to a symptom
Irritable bowel Syndrome generally occurs before a colon cancer.
Iron deficiency anaemia: Due to bleeding in stool, there are chances of anaemia that can also be one potential symptom of colon cancer.

Tongue Cancer - Know its Symptoms and Causes
Considered as a type of mouth cancer or oral cancer, tongue cancer gets developed in the squamous cells of the tongue’s surface. It can either cause lesions or tumours. Cancer can establish itself in two different areas of the tongue, which is, the front part and the back part. The front part is generally affected by tongue cancer while the back portion develops oropharyngeal cancer.
The most common and noticeable symptoms of tongue cancer are a sore on the tongue that does not heal and a painful tongue. Other symptoms include:
1) On the lining of the mouth, red and white patches are a potential sign of squamous cell carcinoma. This is because of an abnormal cell growth/ overgrowth caused because of irritants like sharp teeth, broken denture, or tobacco, which is often cancerous. The patches are called erythroplakia and are considered precancerous while the white spots are called leukoplakia.
2) Mouth ulcers also called canker sores, are painful areas in the mouth and gums that range in size. They are usually red or yellow.
3) Numbness in mouth or prickling feeling on lips or inside your mouth is called paresthesia. It usually involves pressure, irritation, over-excitement, or damage to the nerves.
4)  Sore throat or pain while swallowing, which is medically termed as odynophagia. It may include a sharp or dull ache in the jaw, chest, throat, or food pipe. There can be possibility that pain may only affect one side of the throat and it can also change when a person breathes deeply.
5) The bleeding tongue can be dangerous if not stopped, not just because it is a symptom of tongue cancer but because the uncontrolled bleeding would build up blood in the throat which can make it hard for a person to breathe.
6) Lump or sore on the side of a tongue is the fungiform papillae which become enlarged due to a variety of reasons which may be related to stress, hormones, etc.
Causes of tongue cancer are as follows:
1) Human Papillomavirus (HPV), commonly known as the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer in women, is also a cause behind the tongue cancer for it captures the tongue base and tonsils. Although, there are more than 150 subtypes of HPV that can infect the throat (oropharyngeal HPV) but it has been found that it is predominantly transmitted by sexual contact.
2)  About 80% of the patients diagnosed with oral cancer use tobacco in the form of cigarettes, chewing tobacco or snuff. The tobacco smoke is made up of more than 7000 chemicals, including over 70 cancer causes. It also contains tar, poisonous gases and radioactive material, which build up inside the bodies of smokers.
3) Alcohol use is considered to be the second most significant risk factor causing tongue cancer. Its effect would even help us in understanding how both alcohol and tobacco work together to increase the risk of cancer. The alcohol dehydrates the cell walls, which enhances the ability of smoking to permeate mouth tissues.
4) Betel nut chewing has harmful effects on oral soft tissues. It often gets implicated in oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and can cause leukoplakia, which is detrimental to the oral cavity.
5) Exposure to a few kinds of chemicals can also be one of the significant reasons behind tongue cancer. Those chemicals may include asbestos, sulphuric acid etc.
6) Diet can also be one of the significant reasons behind tongue cancer. It is considered that diet with fewer fruits and vegetables and high in red meat or processed foods can also be one of the reasons behind oral cancer.
7) Hygiene plays a vital role in the overall health of an individual. Here too, poor hygiene can be a cause. Not correctly caring about teeth and gums can be a reason behind tongue cancer.
8) Family History, i.e. someone in the family who had the same disease can carry it to another person, leaving behind an ailing person fighting cancer.
HEAD AND NECK CANCER
It includes cancers in throat, lips, mouth, salivary glands and larynx. It may be caused due to high alcohol and cigarette abuse or due to HPV.
Symptoms:
1) Swelling or sore throat is the most important and common symptom in patients diagnosed with cancer in the neck. The swelling or pain isn’t generally harmful, but if it doesn’t heal, it can potentially be a symptom for head and neck cancer.
2) A sore throat is always accompanied by a common cold/flu/viral infection, but a persistent one could be a sign for a developing head and neck cancer.
3) Bad breath has always been associated with hygiene, but it is not valid in all cases. Sometimes foul mouth odour, which is not explained by health, can also be a symptom.
4) Hoarseness or change in voice can be mistaken for a sore throat, but the incapability of it to heal should be looked upon by a doctor in a proper manner.
5) A change in season generally leaves people with illnesses like the common cold and other viral infections, and sometimes they can cause chest congestion, which is also one of the symptoms of head and neck cancer.
6) Difficulty in breathing also points to a wrong functioning, that may lead to head and neck cancer.
7) Jaw pain or loosening of teeth can be a severe issue, as this may be a beginning of the neck portion losing its ability to hold onto anything.
8) Unexplained weight loss and fatigue point to the weakness in the body because of the neck and head cancer.
9) Pain or difficulty in chewing should not always be taken for tonsillitis, as they can be a very major symptom of head and neck cancer.
10) Blood in the saliva or phlegm can be a severe symptom not just for head and neck cancer but for many other diseases
Causes:
The two leading reasons behind the head and neck cancer are:
1)  Tobacco: Tobacco use means smoking cigars, cigarettes or chewing tobacco and snuff. It is one of the most significant risk factors for head and neck cancer. Although the amount of tobacco use would affect the chances of recovery. In addition to that, even passive smoking may increase a person’s susceptibility to head and neck cancer.
2) Alcohol: Alcohol consumption raises the risk of a person to develop cancer in his mouth, and oesophagus
The several other factors that can increase a person’s risk of developing head and neck cancer included-
3) Prolonged sun exposure: It is mainly connected to the tumour in the lip area, and skin cancer of the head and neck.
4) Human Papillomavirus (HPV): There are different subtypes and types of HPV causing certain types of cancers. This virus spreads through oral sexual activity.
5) Epstein-Barr virus (EBV): EBV is also more commonly known as the virus, which causes mononucleosis, and plays a major role in the development of head and neck cancer.
6) Gender: Men tend to be more prone to head and neck cancer than women.
7) Age: People above the age of 40 years are more likely to develop head and neck cancer.
8) Poor oral and dental hygiene: One should always maintain good health as poor hygiene, especially in case of teeth and gum, can cause various diseases.
9) Environment and occupational inhalants: Many kinds of chemicals put a person to a risk of head and neck cancer. Other than compounds, inhaling wood dust, paint fumes etc. are also harmful.
10) Poor nutrition: A diet deficient of Vitamin A and B also poses a threat of head and neck cancer
11) Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): The reflux of stomach acid in the upper airway and throat can be considered with the development of head and neck cancer.
TREATMENT:
Many head and neck cancers can be cured if found at the appropriate stage. Treating cancer is not just about eliminating cancer but also making sure that the nearby organs, nerves and tissues work properly. The main treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy.
1) Surgery: The main goal of surgery is to remove a cancerous tumour. Laser technology may be used to treat an early stage tumour, while if cancer has spread, the doctor may remove the lymph nodes in the neck to treat the head and neck cancer.
2) Radiation Therapy: It is the use of high energy x-rays or other particles to destroy cancer cells. It usually consists of several treatments given over a set period. There are different types of radiation therapy for different kinds of cancers, but before beginning, a patient must consult an oncologist because the radiation may cause tooth decay. It may also have other side effects like skin redness or skin irritation, dry mouth, nausea, in case of treatment of head and neck cancer.
3) Chemotherapy: It is the use of drugs to destroy the cancer cells. It stops the cancer cells from growing, dividing and making more cells. A chemotherapy schedule usually consists of several cycles.
4) Targeted therapy: It is a treatment that targets the specific genes of cancer, proteins or the tissue environment; that gives boost to cancer survival and growth. This type of treatment clog the growth and spreading cancer cells while causing the minimum limiting damage to healthy cells.
