Stardust - Zayn, Willie, and Ringo

Both these albums contain the song Stardust. "Stardust" is a 1927 song composed by Hoagy Carmichael, with lyrics later added by Mitchell Parish. It has been recorded as an instrumental or vocal track over 1,500 times, and has been translated into over 40 languages.

Originally written as a jazz instrumental, however when Carmichael began working for Mills Music in 1928, they assigned Mitchell Parish to write lyrics for the song. Don Redman was the first to play the song, and it became a regular song at the Cotton Club NYC nightclub.

It's interesting to note that during this time segregation was in full effect. People of Color were not allowed to attend performances as patrons of the Cotton Night Club, however, they could perform there. This nightclub quickly became a regular haunt for celebrities of the time.

Carmichael went on to say that he wrote the music for Stardust during the end of his love affair with Kathryn Moore, who would go on to marry Art Baker, a trumpet player in Carmichael's group Carmichael's Collegians.

This song is considered part of the Great American Songbook. The original composition being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1995.

The reason this song becomes important is because of the Willie Nelson references that Zayn has used in his roll out of his latest album Room Under the Stairs.

March 6, 2024 Zayn began the roll out and introduction of Room Under the Stairs. Part of this rollout consisted of photographs. One of the photographs was notably, Zayn sitting at a drum set wearing a Willie Nelson 4th of July T-Shirt.

In many interviews, including Nylon Magazine, Zayn mentions the influence Willie Nelson had on this album.

That's when I discovered that Willi also recorded a song with the same name, Stardust. It was after listening to Ringo's version of the same song that I found the sonic references.

Why does any of this matter...

Zayn is leaning into this reference indirectly.

When looking at the Beatles history, I discovered a couple of things.

John Lennon announced his intention to leave the Beatles in 1969. Ringo Starr was the first to release a solo album in March of 1970, and McCartney released his own album on April 27, 1970. McCartney actually arranged Ringo's version of Stardust on his album Sentimental Journey. There was zero animosity between McCartney and Starr.

Leaning into how much Harry has not only visually assimilated himself to Paul McCartney in his Fine Line era, but also acknowledged the influence of Paul McCartney solo music in the writing of that album, leads me down the road of there was no animosity between him and Zayn. I don't believe that use of Ringo Starr's name on Saturday Night Live instead of Zayn's name was a slam or a dig.

Back to the Egg

Wing released "Back to the Egg" in July 1979.

For those that don't know Wings was a group consisting of former Beatles songwriter, bassist, guitarist and singer Paul McCartney, his wife Linda McCartney on keyboards, session drummer Denny Seiwell, and former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine.

"Back to the Egg" was their 7th studio album, and sadly their last. They also did a TV special to promote the album.

The tie back to Harry, as he discussed on the Howard Stern show that during the writing of Fine Line he was listening a lot to Wings album Ram.

Paul released his first solo work was released on April 17, 1970 titled McCartney. He and wife Linda, formed Wings shortly after the release and began working on music together. Ram, was their 1st album together.

What is interesting about Wings, is Paul and Linda were it's core, other musicians came and left in the 10 years of recording.

Anywho, the reason I am writing about this is to tie back into Harry Styles and his love of McCartney and Eggs.

Now, the shirt he is wearing, debuted on this broadcast as well...Arrow through the Heart.

The heart also looks like a hard boiled egg.

The fact that Harry was interviewed with Paul McCartney as a part of the Another Man article about Fine Line, is just another fun fact.

The referencing Paul McCartney serves two purposes, in my opinion, to acknowledge the reference and comparisons of One Direction to The Beatles during his time there, and the last is the breaking up of the band because of creative differences and want of going in different directions creatively.

The fact that on Saturday Night Live during this rollout of fine line Harry references Zayn as Ringo Starr served to also support the Beatles references and break up. I truly do not believe it was intended as a derogatory statement.

Hazoff 2013 and 2014 Zayn

I went down a Jeff Azoff Rabbit hole, and found that Harry met Jeff in 2013, spent the majority of 2014 cultivating his relationship with him. This is interesting, considering who Jeff's father is. Face value, Irving wants the artist to own their music and to profit from their image and music. He's about the artist, that's how Irving made a name for himself.

Jeff was working for CAA at the time he met Harry, which is another Management firm like Full Stop. However, Harry was being managed by Modest Management, which is tied into Syco and representing all their artists.

2013 One Direction resigned a contract with Syco. Reports during September 2013, were the contract was for 3 years & 3 albums, with a bonus promised if all 5 stayed together for the duration of the contract. This is around the time that Harry met Jeff Azoff. This is also the contract renegotiation where the boys retained ownership of their band name and asserted more control in their music.

In the Rolling Stone Interview in 2018, Harry mentioned that he first mentioned a Hiatus in late 2014, because he didn't want to exhaust their fanbases in preparation for their solo careers. Which, hiatus, just meant not continuing as a group passed their contracted time.

September 2014, Syco began trying to sell to Sony. There are emails floating about where Simon was leaning into One Direction for the valuation of Syco. Sony called Simon out, saying they knew the contract with 1D ended at the end of 2015, and the likelihood of it continuing beyond was slim.

The reason I mention all of this, is there's a villification of Zayn leaving and causing a riff in Zarry. The reality of it is, Simon wasn't going to resign the boys to Syco if they stayed together, Harry had no plans of staying beyond 2015, and there wasn't a guarantee Sony was going to pick up what was left of 1D with Harry being gone.

In the Call Her Daddy Podcast in 2024, Zayn mentioned that the reason he left was he could see the writing on the wall because contracts weren't being signed. Why continue to take beatings in the public eye, and have your image sent through the ringer, when you know one of your band mates is set to jump, and there's no guarantee that you'll have a band in literally 9 months time?

I think Harry mentioning the hiatus in 2014, was also a way to prepare the others in their pursuit of their own personal goals as it related to their careers. Giving them the opportunity to network, create a landing pad of sorts.

Looking at Zayn specifically, he wrote in his book that he developed an eating disorder in 2014. He specifically mentions looking at November 2014 being a month that it was at its peak. He had no control over the things going on around him, and the one thing he could control was food.

September 2014 Syco is trying to sell, Late 2014 H starts talking Hiatus, September 2014 Harry begins dropping the word "Weigh" while singing "Little Things", and end of the Where We Are Tour was October 5, 2014.

November 1, 2014 Zayn missed an interview being sick.

November 8, 2014 Zayn was not present for the "Between Us" perfume campaign shoot, as seen in the BTS film, as well as the rollout. This perfume was released after he had left 1D.

November 15, 2014 he traveled to the taping of the Band Aid taping with Louis.

November 16, 2014 After BandAid the boys fly to the US, into Orlando.

November 17, 2014 the Today Show taping on at Universal Studios, this is where they also tape the Christmas 2014 special. Zayn misses the taping of the Today Show with Matt Lauer. Matt Lauer asks his band mates if he has a drug problem. Zayn makes the appearance for the Christmas special taping, but does not participate in the roller coaster ride question and answer. He performs on stage, and participates with fans.

November 18, 2014 Disagreement with Paul Higgins and Zayn.

Nov 19, 2014 Paul Higgins, long standing Tour Security Manager leaves the US and flies home to London, and 2 days later it is reported in the media he got into an argument with Zayn and quit.

November 20, 2014 taping of Jimmy Fallon in NYC.

November 22, 2014 is the 2014 American Music Awards in Los Angeles, where 1D performs Night Changes. Harry is asked who he is excited to see tonight, he says Sam Smith and Ariana Grande (Who he had given Just a Little Bit of Your Heart to, shortly before or shortly after), Zayn immediately asks Harry if there are any rappers on tonight?

Have the remainder of December off and all of January, but February 7, 2015 is when the On The Road Again Tour begins. Rehearsals began February 5, 2014, in Sydney.

To sight stress as being the reason Zayn couldn't handle it anymore, was a understatement.

I'm a natural introvert and my anxiety was peaking just researching what was happening at the time. I could not imagine how hard this would have been for someone who, like me, that doesn't enjoy being out and about for long periods. I would have lost my mind long before Zayn ever broke.

This will be discussing March 2015 and include whatever I can find on all of the boys in that timeframe. I believe Truth lives in the middle. I don't want to spread opinions, so these will contain facts only. If there are pictures I will indicate, but due to limitations of Tumblr can't post them all. There is a 6-7 hour time difference between Asia and London.

Another thing of interest, at this time, Dan Wooton is over The Sun and The Daily Mail. Simon Jones is the Publicist in charge of the image of all the boys in One Direction. Simon Jones is still the active publicist for Perrie Edwards, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan.

Of note, Seduction Nightclub is an adult themed night club, with scantily clad women dancing on tables. It is not a strip club, just adult themed. This Nigh Club permanently closed in 2019.

According to The Daily Mail, Maria Olsson says Zayn and Louis went to Seduction Night Club where she met and left with Zayn, had a one night stand, and met up with him again the next morning after Lauren had left.

March 13, 2015:

I do need to make a side note, the distance from Smalls to the Sukhothai Hotel, where everyone stayed, is 3 min in a car. Literally just around the corner and up the street. The distance from the hotel to the stadium where they performed is 22 miles in a car.

Smalls is a 3 story building with a restaurant in the lower floor, where they have live music and a DJ booth. The upper two floors consist of an enclosed bar and a covered outdoor bar.

According to my research, Harry had gone to Smalls Live Music Nightclub.

Zayn went to Seduction Night Club with Louis and cousin Jawaad, to watch DJ Examples set. This is where he met and was photographed with Lauren Richardson. She later stated she was invited to a Villa at a Hotel that Louis and Zayn we're renting in Phuket.

March 14, 2015:  

Louis Tomlinson photos kissing Lucy Julian were reportedly taken at the same all-night pool party at Bangkok’s Sukhothai Hotel at 6:30am on the morning of their March 14 concert, The Daily Mail reported.

There are pictures of Louis exiting the pool and returning to the lobby of the hotel.

According to Joe Cummings, after their concert, Harry came back to Smalls and was told by Harry he and Zayn had a falling out.  

The timing of this is the concert started at 8:00 pm local time. Their set was 20 songs and and encore of 3. Their opening act was DJ ONO, and DJ Buddha was his promoter at the time. So 1D would have gone on by 8:30-9:30 pm. 1D set would have been about 1.5 - 2 hour set...they would have been done by 11:30 pm. 25 min drive back to the hotel, gets them back close to midnight. Which is when Joe says he started talking to H. There's some wiggle room in there for showers and what nots.

My Assumption - The argument has have been before the concert and before H was photographed with DJ Buddha and DJ ONO. DJ Buddha is the one who told H about Smalls and made introductions to Joe.

Richardson will later say nothing happened between them, they met and enjoyed each other's company while together, then went their separate ways. I would like to expand the focus from Zarry, which I believe a relationship still exists in some form, to include the impact all 5 men have on each other. In my research, it's fascinating that all of them appear to have given nods to one another in some way shape of form.

I do believe that acknowledgement across all 5 exists. I do not mean these necessarily indicate romantic involvement, simply acknowledgement of each other and support. I think long are the days of Easter Eggs being dropped for public consumption.

The need to be saved by their fanbases are long over. They are now all in their 30's making choices to make their careers what they are.
