babies 👶🏾 first jar of maple 🍁 syrup made from the maple trees located here at the ZAFA vineyard /farm. only (what seems like) 100 jars to go 🫠. Golden—delicate flavor and lightest color this is the lightest color and is usually associated with the first sap flows during the sugaring season. it is golden in color and with a subtle maple flavor, often with hints of vanilla. the delicate flavor often surprises people who expect a strong maple flavor found in other grades. #fermentablesugar #zafawines #zafavineyard #zafafarm #counterspell #mongoose #wineisfarming #maplesyrup #vermont #islelamotte (at ZAFA Wines) https://www.instagram.com/p/CptE_purqcA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“The trees act not as individuals, but somehow as a collective. Exactly how they do this, we don’t yet know. But what we see is the power of unity. What happens to one happens to us all. We can starve together or feast together.” — Robin Wall Kimmerer (Braiding Sweetgrass) #wineisfarming #vermont #maplesyrup #fermentablesugar #zafawines #zafavineyard #zafafarm #braidingsweetgrass (at ZAFA Wines) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpcn-FgrpPP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

vermont had the warmest January in 129 years of records 🌡️ and February appears to be following January’s pattern. 🫠 it’s going to be interesting to observe how this impacts the growing season. 🌾🍅🍉🍏🍇 in the interim i’m enjoying observing the chickens 🐓 forage for morsels 🪲🐜🕷️ #zafawines #wineisfarming #vermont (at ZAFA Wines) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co8K_iTPpQT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

initially was v curious when one of the hens 🐓 laid this big ass egg 🥚 (pictured on the left) last week. albeit curious 🧐 i was not intending to make a 3 egg 🍳 scramble this morning. but here we are… when i cracked open the bigg ass egg, not one ☝🏾 but two ✌🏾 yolk’s plopped out. naturally i asked google “why does my egg have two yolks?” and this is what google had to say: What are the odds of getting a double yolk? Without any outside interference, the odds of getting a double-yolker are about one in every thousand eggs. Why do double yolks happen? Double-yolk eggs are a byproduct of rapid ovulation. That means two yolks are released in quick succession into a hen's oviduct (aka fallopian tube) and end up in the same shell. Typically, yolks are released about an hour apart, but hormonal changes or a hyperactive ovary will cause double releases. Who lays double-yolkers? Usually, young hens are responsible for double-yolkers, but heavier breeds like the Buff Orpington are also known to produce double-yolk eggs more regularly than other breeds. Additionally, hens that experience an abrupt, drastic increase in hours of light exposure are more prone to laying eggs with two yolks. 🌈 the mo you know 🌈 #zafawines #counterspell #wineisfarming #vermont #layinghens #doulbleyolk #oneinathousand #themoyouknow (at ZAFA Wines) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn7Nba0LZvi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Winesplaining Episode 7- Co-fermented feels
in host coly den haan’s words: “krista scruggs is an american natural wine and cider maker and, i dare say, an exciting and experimental one at that. since coming on the wine scene krista has made a name for herself very quickly. it turns out, being a black, queer woman who farms and makes wine in vermont garners a lot of interest. this has been a double-edged sword for krista. with some incredible highs and very tough lows, krista has had a whirlwind career in a short amount of time. we happened to catch her in our los angeles studio while she visited from vermont. she spoke candidly about her journey including her dreams, challenges, triumphs, and one really crappy year.”
winesplaining is hosted by coly den haan, executive producer is angelica luna, and senior producer is amelie rousseaux.

ABC Localish - Episode 4 – Trailblazing Winemaker
youtube
Winemaker Krista Scruggs has a history of defying expectations. She’s a young, queer Black woman who has chosen to make wine in Vermont that is uniquely made from biodynamically farmed grapes, sometimes co-fermented with foraged apples to create a singular hybrid style.
How does a breakup taste? According to Krista Scruggs, it tastes like a fine glass of cabernet. She's a Vermont winemaker who has a knack for distilling feelings, songs, and films into a vintage blend for you to enjoy with friends or, all by yourself. Inspired by her homesteading grandfather, she's now embarking on her most significant venture yet, her own vineyard. 'For me, the most radical, political thing you can do in this world is to grow your own food and not be reliant on anyone else.'

Krista Scruggs Feat. On Thrillist Job Goals
Originally from California, Krista spent years traveling and working with small winemakers. She knew she wanted to make organic wine, but because of financial reasons and not having access to land, it wasn’t going to happen in California. Through determination, she landed a job as a winemaker and assistant farmer at a La Garagista, a natural wine company. Under the mentorship of Deirdre Heekin, she helped redefine winemaking in New England by focusing on Biodynamics in the vineyard and natural vinification practices. Now the owner of her own wine company, Krista was named to Wine Enthusiast magazine’s 2018 list of the “Top 40 Under 40 Tastemakers.”
